4 5. New Business Economic Development Roles and Responsibilities 5.1 Mayor Clay explained that there is some confusion as to the roles and responsibilities of his office and the Economic Development Committee with regard to economic development activities in Port Moody. The Mayor said he sees his office engaging in connection initiatives for the city s business community as opposed to promoting economic development initiatives. His hope is for these initiatives to show the businesses community that the city wants to help them achieve growth. Three business speaker series events will be held this year in an effort to do just that. The first event, held on April 1, was very successful. The Mayor s office is hoping to build a better database of businesses located in Port Moody. Mayor Clay said he felt that business roundtable events didn t provide a large enough audience to achieve this, so his office decided to reach out to a broader audience through a larger forum, in addition to roundtable initiatives organized by the Economic Development Committee. Mayor Clay reported that the theme of the next business summit event will likely be greening your business. He said that once the event details are worked out, he will bring it back to the committee for input and assistance. Chamber of Commerce: Economic Profile and Partnership Opportunities 5.2 Mr. Mike Hind provided an overview of the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has more than 900 members throughout the Tri-Cities and has recently hired a public policy advisor to research various issues and provide the Chamber Board with information and policy recommendations. Mr. Hind reported that the Chamber Economic/Business Development Committee is planning two large events this year. The first, tentatively set for May 27, will be a transportation forum entitled Evergreen Line 2016 and Beyond. Presenters will include representatives of Translink, the president of the Surrey business improvement association, among others. Mr. Hind asked to have a representative of the City participate in the upcoming transportation forum to discuss the Official Community Plan concepts and processes. Councillor Dilworth inquired about the possibility of a member of this committee sitting on the Chamber Economic Development Committee and vice versa. It was agreed that this would be beneficial. Ms. Desiree Dupuis outlined some of the initiatives being looked at by the Chamber Economic Development Committee. She volunteered to represent the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce on this committee. Mr. Hind said that, traditionally, the Chamber has promoted one event per day during Small Business Week in October, but the Economic Development Committee - 3 - April 2, 2014 #267230 File: 01.0360.20.03/2014

5 details of this year s plans have yet to be determined. It was agreed that the October 22 Spike Awards event should be included as one of the Chamber s events during that week. Mayor Clay and Mike Hind left the meeting at this point. 2014 Annual Work Plan Subcommittee Reports 5.3 Councillor Dilworth provided an overview of the finalized work plan and reported that it had been approved by Council. 5.4 Health and Wellness: Robin Matthews-Kanhai explained that planning is going well for the Health and Wellness Forum scheduled for May 21. Staff will work with the sub-committee on an email invitation template and Councillor Dilworth will work with the Communications Division on a press release. Tourism: Councillor Dilworth said that a meeting will be set for mid- May. City Beautification: Councillor Dilworth reported that the first meeting was held last week. A report will be provided in May. Business Summit: Given that the Mayor s office has some events being planned, it was agreed that this committee would not plan a summit for this year, but would continue researching and providing support to the Mayor s office with regard to the business speaker series. Roundtable 5.5 Members provided updates on their various events and activities. 6. Information 7. Adjournment Councillor Dilworth adjourned the meeting at 8:20 p.m. Economic Development Committee - 4 - April 2, 2014 #267230 File: 01.0360.20.03/2014
