NYSG Program Summary Undergraduate research and scholarships Graduate research and fellowships Faculty research & curriculum enhancement grants Summer internships at NASA centers, industry, and NYSG institutions CubeSats High-altitude ballooning Experiment launched on STS-134, installed on ISS Precollege programs Outreach and informal education 5
A Few NYSG Highlights CUNYSAT led by Medgar Evers College (MEC) CubeSat program with MEC undergrads and faculty & students from other CUNY colleges (e.g., CCNY, Queensborough Comm. College) Successful Critical Design Review (CDR) in Feb 2011 CUNYSAT was selected in NASA s CubeSat launch initiative; currently manifested on a Falcon 9 rocket launching June 2012 Graduating CUNYSAT students have earned high accolades (e.g., employed by Honeybee Robotics; awarded NSF Grad Research Fellow.) MECSAT (high-altitude ballooning program) at MEC Conducted 15 ozonesonde launches (NYC and Adirondacks) in conjunction with a tropospheric research program During summer 2010 high school students were involved in MECSAT, gaining hands-on experience and undergrad mentoring Prof. Shermane Austin has been aiding other BalloonSat programs in New York (e.g., US Military Academy, Rensselaer, SUNY Binghamton) 6
A Few NYSG Highlights Competitive Research and Higher Education Grants: NYSG distributes an RFP throughout our affiliate institutions. PIs can apply for funds to seed research or enhance higher education curriculum; 1:1 matching funds required. FY10 Competitive Research & Higher Education Grants Awarded: Broadening Female Students Doctoral Training via a Synergistic Program in STEM Research and Mechatronics/Robotics K 12 Outreach High Time Resolution Astronomy Using Small Telescopes and Simple, Inexpensive Cold Detectors and Amplifiers Research into Wing Wake Vortices in Parallel or Oblique Ground Effect Spacecraft Inertial and Relative Navigation Based on Neuromorphic Sensing and Input Estimation Stochastic Exploration Using Terahertz Spectroscopy in the Analysis of Adsorption of Biomolecules on Clay Minerals: A Ground Breaking Initiative 7
A Few NYSG Highlights NY Space Grant Teacher Fellows Program: New program to train a NY state-wide cohort of 16 middle school science teachers in NASA missions/research and classroom STEM resources/activities. Two components: Two-day conference at Cornell in Jan 2011 included tours, lectures by space science profs and grad students, and trying hands-on classroom lessons. Online networking & collaboration; remote learning via 4 webinars run by Cornell (topics: NASA resources, Mars rovers, Stardust-NExT, etc.) 8
A Few NYSG Highlights Science Teachers Association of New York State: New partnership with STANYS to infuse NASA content into professional development workshops for science teachers (grades 7-12) across the state. Over 250 teachers have attended NYSG-supported workshops (topics: lunar samples, astrobiology, MESSENGER mission, etc.). FIRST Robotics: NYSG helped sponsor a rural, northern NY high school team to the FIRST Robotics World Championships at St. Louis in April. Team 229 did very well, making it to the 2 nd round of semi-finals. 9
A Few NYSG Highlights NY Space Grant NASA Lecture Series: New program to provide NASA & STEM presentations to schools and community colleges in urban and rural areas throughout NY State. Eleven presentations were given (8 at K-12 schools, 3 at community colleges) by faculty affiliated with NYSG institutions. Students and parents have fun with center-of-mass experiments during a NY Space Grant NASA Lecture at a middle school in Queens, NY (March 2011). 10
A Few NYSG Highlights Graduate student support: Twenty-eight graduate students received NYSG fellowships or conducted NYSG-sponsored research at 10 institutions (City College of NY, Clarkson, Columbia, Cornell, Medgar Evers, Polytechnic Inst. of NYU, Rensselaer, Rochester Inst. of Tech., SUNY Buffalo, and Univ. of Rochester). Chip satellites on ISS: NYSG has supported Prof. Mason Peck s research and students over the years. Their latest achievement: three prototypes are part of the MISSE-8 pallet, launched and mounted to the ISS exterior during STS-134 (May 2011). 11
