About Swiss TPH The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a leading institution in the field of global health. Its mandate is to contribute to improving the health of populations internationally, nationally and locally through excellence in research, services and teach-ing and training. Swiss TPH was founded as the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI), in 1943, as a public organisation. In 2009, the former Institute for Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) was integrated with STI to become Swiss TPH. It is an associated institute of the University of Basel. Currently, over 700 staff members from 62 nations work for Swiss TPH. RESEARCHING HEALTH AND DISEASE IN AN INTERCONNECTED WORLD Swiss TPH covers a broad spectrum of research on health and diseases. In the laboratory and field, researchers investigate the life cycles of parasites and how infectious diseases typical of low-resource countries are transmitted. Equally, they develop new drugs and vaccines against diseases such as Buruli ulcer, malaria and sleeping sickness. But Swiss TPH is also an important player for research on non-communicable diseases. For instance, the environmental, ecological, social, gender and molecular contexts of health in the South and North are of intense research interest. Based on its evidence-based research, Swiss TPH advises policy makers, agencies and institutions worldwide. This task is a key part of our commitment to support public and global health in all its domains. Services to Strengthen Health Systems Worldwide Swiss TPH also provides programme management and implementation, consultancy and advisory, and operations research services to sustainably strengthen health systems worldwide, through its Swiss Centre for International Health. The centre is engaged in shortand longterm projects and programmes, with a special focus on Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Switzerland. In close collaboration with their partners, the centre's researchers also develop and implement new technological solutions that match local contexts and priorities. The service portfolio ranges from health technology and telemedicine to sexual and reproductive health and health systems strengthening. Teaching and Training: Mutual Learning for Change Sharing knowledge and mutual learning across different cultures and continents are key principles of Swiss TPH. As an associated institute of the University of Basel, Swiss TPH is active at all levels of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education at the University of Basel. It offers PhD-and Master programmes in Infection Biology and Epidemiology, as well as a Master of Advanced Studies in International Health and an MBA in International Health Management. www.swisstph.ch 8

About FESTMIH The Federation of European Societies for Tropical Medicine and International Health (FESTMIH) was founded in 1995 in Hamburg, during the first European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH). The FESTMIH network now covers 14 countries in Europe, and includes roughly 6,000 tropical medicine and international health professionals across Europe and in the developing world. FESTMIH provides a strong platform for collaboration toward common goals with its sister societies and colleagues in the south. The Federation is a member of the World Federation of Academic Institutions for Global Health; it is also a member of the European Academic Global Health Alliance, where FESTMIH s president is also a member of the executive board. www.festmih.eu / festmihsecretariat@gmail.com The interests and activities of FESTMIH and its national societies have shifted from an initial focus on tropical medicine to one of global health and migration, both South-North and East-West. The Federation promotes health strategy exchanges and harmonisation of recommendations related to developing countries, emergency situations and international travellers. It seeks the advice of overseas partners to identify their health and research priorities, fosters new scientific societies in the tropics dealing with health sciences, encourages European harmonisation of tropical medicine training, and organises regular conferences on tropical medicine and international health in Europe; the latter of which have become platforms for debate on European research and cooperation in international health. FESTMIH s official journal, Tropical Medicine and International Health (TM&IH), has become one of the leading journals in its field. 9

Testimonials The ECTMIH in Barcelona offered a great platform to meet with a large number of practitioners in the malaria community; after all, significant progress against malaria can only be made through partnerships. Hans Rietveld Director, Global Market Access, Novartis Malaria Initiative, Novartis Pharma AG Not too big and not too small, the ECTMIH provides a great platform for meeting and sharing with all the stakeholders involved in global health. Dr. Benedict Blayney Director, TB and Neglected Tropical Diseases, Access to Medicines Department Sanofi The Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) co-chaired a main session, participated in a satellite symposium, and presented posters. From its exhibition stand, MMV interacted with many of its stakeholders and was able to provide information to ECTMIH participants. This was an opportune meeting to exchange information and provide updates regarding advances in the field of malaria treatment. George Jagoe Executive Vice President Global Access, Medicines for Malaria Venture Excellent visibility throughout the more than 1,300 delegates attending this event and very good contacts with key opinion leaders. Our Symposium was a success for us and our booth was visited by many, many doctors. Vincenzo Giordano M.D. International Medical Affairs Manager, Sigma-Tau Industrie Farmaceutiche Riunite S.p.A. 12

Conference City & Venue City of Basel One of the city s highlights is the Fondation Beyeler, a museum built by architect Renzo Piano and idyllically situated in Berower Park. Another worldclass museum is the Kunstmuseum with paintings and drawings by Upper-Rhine and Flemish artists from 1400 to 1600 and international art of the 19th to 21st centuries. Basel is also well known for Art Basel, the world s premier international art show for modern and contemporary works. The event attracts more than 65,000 visitors yearly, from all over the world. Basel is a city that both values tradition and is open to innovation. Thus, along with the classical patrician residences and medieval churches in the well-preserved Old Town, one also finds numerous modern buildings by internationally renowned architects such as Richard Meier, Mario Botta, Renzo Piano or Herzog & de Meuron. This city on the Rhine is a key international transportion hub, with an airport close to the city, a port on the Rhine, two central stations, a dense public transport network and a modern road system ensuring good connections to the rest of the world. 16 Basel is located at the junction of three countries. Proverbial Swiss quality meets a multicultural population in the border area with France and Germany, which gives the city its distinctively cosmopolitan, international and innovative flavor. The historic Old Town, with its quaint squares and winding streets, never fails to impress visitors with its charm. The sundrenched banks of the Rhine, dreamy narrow streets and countless outdoor cafés invite visitors and residents alike to stroll and savour the atmosphere.

Conference Venue Congress Center Basel (CCB) ECTMIH 2015 will take place at the Congress Center Basel, one of the most modern congress centres in Switzerland. Equipped with the latest technology, it provides an excellent atmosphere for conferences and exhibitions. The Congress Center is located directly alongside Messe Basel in the heart of the city.
