AMERICAN LEGION CLINTON POST 259 9122 Piscataway Road FOR GOD AND COUNTRY... Clinton, Maryland 20735 (301) 868-2550 Lamont Gibson Commander Web Site: post259.org April Charles Lewis - Editor 2015 COMMANDER S MESSAGE THE APRIL NEWS LETTER The Military Academies (The Military Academy at West Point, The Air Force Academy, Annapolis Naval Academy and The Coast Guard Academy) provide a great free collegiate education for your sons, daughters, and grandchildren. This summer you should take them to visit a military academy. Between their junior and senior year, they can participate in a special summer program that will allow them to live in the Academy dorms, talk to the cadets and walk through and use the Academy facilities. The Academies have sports camps for kids from 8 to 18. I recommend that you expose your children and grandchildren to one or more of the Academies. Don t hesitate to call the Academy of your choice and ask for additional information regarding the available programs for kids who want to go the Academy. It is my privilege to serve you. Freida Skaggs President Unit 259 Clinton, Maryland PRESIDENT S PAGE Members This winter has been brutal and I know, like me, you are pretty tired of it. However, it seems like it refuses to release us. Hopefully by this time next month we will have begun the warm weather on a continuous basis and not one day followed by 7 cold days. DEPARTMENT DRAWDOWN Remember to support our Department Drawdown to be held Saturday, May 2 nd at Kent Island post 278. Tickets are $10. Any questions concerning general information or tickets should be directed to Linda Caudell, Chairman at 301-964-1606. Flyers for this event were handed out at the February 2015 meeting. COMMUNITY SERVICE: Following are several ways to serve in the community and earn those needed community hours that are reported on the annual report due May 1: Collect pop tops where accepted for Ronald McDonald House Gather coupons to use on a shopping spree for the homeless or Service Families. Make birthday; get well and thinking of you cards for senior citizens and nursing homes. These are just a few ideas, but there are many more community related ideas that I am sure you can think of or are already involved in. Please keep account of your hours and submit them to me for inclusion in our annual report. As discussed at the last meeting in February, if you are currently participating in community service activities, please remember to submit your hours at the meeting in April so that they can be included in this year s report. It would be very much appreciated. A community service request from unit 278 was shared in the Department newsletter that will benefit community hours for their post as well as Unit 259. They are dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence and helping families move from shelters into their own apartments with their children. In this

regard, they are asking for household donations. If you have any items to donate, please contact Betty Kelly for further Information at (410)479-0575.
