The Senior Sleep Technician (TGO-2) operates as part of a multidisciplinary team in a clinical environment comprising medical, nursing, technical, research and administrative staff. The Senior Sleep Technician is responsible for providing technical support and conducting a variety of technical tasks that contribute to and maintain the highest level of clinical practice and service in the Sleep Disorders Unit. These tasks include but are not limited to: > conducting diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies > the application of specialised techniques during sleep studies such as oesophageal manometery > the analysis, scoring and basic interpretation of sleep studies > calibration and routine maintenance of equipment > ordering and maintenance of consumables > accreditation and quality control activities > under supervision assisting in the training of junior or new staff and students. This position will involve rostered shift work including overnight shifts (12 hours), afternoon shifts, sleep study set-up shifts and day shift - as required to meet clinical demand. Key Relationships/ Interactions: Internal > Works collaboratively with other members of staff in the Department of Respiratory & Sleep Medicine WCHN. > Reports to Medical and Nursing Directors, Division of Paediatric Medicine via the Medical Unit Head, Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine however on a daily basis, reports to the Medical Scientist, Sleep Disorders Unit. Major Responsibilities > Using prescribed techniques and methodologies to acquire high quality and accurate polysomnography (PSG) data for clinical / diagnostic and research purposes. > Explaining the PSG procedure at a level appropriate for children and parents/caregivers and answering any questions and concerns raised in order to maximise co-operation with conducting the PSG. > Undertaking high levels and standards of annotation, documentation and record keeping in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of PSG results. > Recognition of sleep stages and abnormal cardio-respiratory events that occur during sleep. > When applicable and under guidance, recruiting subjects for WCHN ethics approved research projects, explaining the research protocol, obtaining informed consent from research subjects and/or parents/guardians and applying the research methodologies. > Adequately supervising and observing children during testing to ensure that they are safe while connected to monitoring equipment. > Implementing appropriate interventions or actions necessary for patient safety including contacting medical staff for further instruction in the event of adverse events. Under medical direction, implementing therapeutic treatment protocols to treat sleep-related breathing disorders with supplementary oxygen or non-invasive ventilation. Scoring and analysis of sleep studies. > Applying professional judgement in conducting supplementary oxygen, CPAP or NIPPV titrations by following procedural protocols or medical instructions. > When appropriate or required contacting and communicating effectively with medical or nursing staff to seek further instruction in the case of difficult titration PSG s. > Undertaking the analysis, scoring and basic interpretation of sleep studies including overnight polysomnography, nap studies and MSLTs using established laboratory standards and guidelines. > Recognising abnormal rest results and ensuring that the appropriate medical staff are promptly informed. Ensuring the performance of sleep studies meet quality and safety standards. > Ensuring sleep studies are performed to the highest standard with respect to technical quality, patient safety and documentation requirements. > Providing Senior Sleep Technicians with feedback on PSG performance. Be thoroughly familiar with the correct and safe operation and maintenance of all sensors, equipment and instrumentation in the Sleep Disorders Unit. > Thorough knowledge and familiarity of the operation and maintenance of relevant equipment, instrumentation and sensors used in the Sleep Disorders Unit including sleep-acquisition computer software. 4 of 9

> Ensuring equipment and sensors are functioning correctly and reliably and if necessary, testing, troubleshooting and upgrading of equipment/sensors. > Conducting regular equipment calibrations according to laboratory protocols and standards. Ensure quality control and maintenance tasks are completed. > Take part in quality control programs within the Sleep Disorders Unit. > Order required minor equipment, consumables, and other Laboratory needs. > Liaise with outside contractors, cleaners, and maintenance staff as required. Provision of technical advice and support. Training of staff and students in polysomnographic techniques. > When required, provision of after-hours technical advice and support to overnight Senior Sleep Technicians. > Training of staff and students in all technical aspects of polysomnographic techniques including diagnostic PSG, oxygen titration, non-invasive ventilation titration and MSLT. > Preparation and presentation of staff training activities at staff meetings. Administrative support to assist the day to day functioning of the Sleep Disorders Unit. > Engendering a welcoming environment to clients. > Responding to telephone and face to face customer enquiries. > Maintenance of client records and prompt distribution of laboratory results. > Maintenance/ ordering of laboratory supplies and minor equipment. > Booking patients for sleep studies. > Taking staff meeting minutes. Domestic and Family Violence The WCHN recognises violence against women as a human rights issue that must be addressed in the workplace, and is committed to a zero tolerance policy towards violence against women in the workplace. Accordingly employees must appropriately report and respond to any such acts in the workplace, and make available appropriate support to employees who may be experiencing violence in the community. Code of Ethics The Code of Ethics for the South Australian Public Sector provides an ethical framework for the public sector and applies to all public service employees: > Democratic Values - Helping the government, under the law to serve the people of South Australia. > Service, Respect and Courtesy - Serving the people of South Australia. > Honesty and Integrity- Acting at all times in such a way as to uphold the public trust. > Accountability- Holding ourselves accountable for everything we do. > Professional Conduct Standards- Exhibiting the highest standards of professional conduct.
