OUR JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION PROJECT FALL 2014 NEW ERA IN THIS ISSUE: Joseph Brant Hospital announces preferred proponent for phase two Joseph Brant Hospital: Rebuilding to serve you better A new Joseph Brant Hospital: Expanded services in a space designed to promote wellness and healing Redevelopment and Expansion Project highlights How is the project funded? Joseph Brant Hospital: Rebuilding to serve you better HIGH QUALITY, SAFE AND RELIABLE HEALTHCARE CLOSE TO HOME, WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST. IT S WHAT EVERYBODY WANTS. Whether you have lived in Burlington for many years, or whether you are new to the community, we know you expect the best from your local/community health care services. At Joseph Brant Hospital, we are committed to providing safe care, quality care and exemplary service to the residents of Burlington, and the surrounding area every time. Each year, more than 250,000 people come to Joseph Brant Hospital for care and treatment. Joseph Brant Hospital has been the hub of healthcare in the Burlington community since 1961. Our hospital was built when Burlington s population was just over 47,000 people. More than fifty years later, the city s population has quadrupled to over 175,000, and it s home to a growing number of seniors living with chronic disease. Just as the community has grown over the years, the delivery of health care has also changed. Our current hospital was built at a time when maternity hospital stays were more than a week after giving birth and when people were treated for mumps and measles, because no vaccine existed. Joseph Brant Hospital hasn t had a major renovation since 1971. And, while we continue to deliver on our mission of providing exemplary care, we know that improvements to our space, equipment and technology will ensure that we continue to meet the healthcare needs of our community for generations to come. JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL PARTNERS WITH INTEGRATED TEAM SOLUTIONS FOR PHASE TWO In partnership with Infrastructure Ontario, we are excited to announce that Integrated Team Solutions (ITS) is the preferred proponent for phase two of our Redevelopment and Expansion Project. Choosing our preferred proponent marks the next milestone in our journey to build a state-of-the art hospital for the Burlington community says Eric Vandewall, President and CEO Joseph Brant Hospital. ITS shares our vision for excellence and understands how the environment affects health care service and delivery and can promote healing and patient wellness. The ITS team is made up of: EllisDon General Contractor Fengate Capital Management - Finance Parkin/Adamson Architects Limited - Architects in joint venture For more information on ITS, visit www.josephbranthospital.ca 2 Joseph Brant Hospital

Joseph Brant Hospital and McMaster Department of Family Medicine and integrates family health care with state-of-the-art facilities. A new hospital will mean that our staff, physicians and volunteers can continue delivering exceptional care in a space designed for today s health care needs, says Eric Vandewall, President and CEO of Joseph Brant Hospital. To meet today s infection prevention and control standards, 70% of our inpatient rooms will be private a significant increase from the 15% we have today, and all patient care areas will incorporate isolation capabilities. When the construction is complete in 2018, Joseph Brant Hospital will have doubled in size, and patients, families, staff, volunteers and donors will walk into what will feel like a brand new hospital. Construction on phase one is almost complete. Our hospital expansion the seven-storey patient care tower is being built where the current back parking lot is situated. In order to begin construction, we built a new parking facility that can hold more than 820 vehicles as part of the first phase. The new parking facility was built with the flexibility for future expansion, if needed. Phase one also includes the building of the Halton McMaster Family Health Centre (HMFHC) on the southwest corner of our property. The HMFHC, which is now seeing patients, is a joint venture between The HMFHC, a community-based family practice teaching unit, provides care to the community while training new doctors and other health care professional students from McMaster University. This partnership with McMaster University designates Joseph Brant Hospital as a clinical education campus, with students learning a variety of specialties including: emergency medicine, surgery, obstetrics and family medicine. In partnership with McMaster University, we are training the next generation of health care providers for the Burlington community, says Vandewall. OUR COMMITMENT TO QUALITY At Joseph Brant Hospital, continuous quality improvement is a core value. In the spring of 2014, Accreditation Canada awarded Joseph Brant Hospital Accreditation with Exemplary Standing with a score of 98.5% - the hospital s highest score to date. Our high accreditation standing is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our staff. From nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and other clinicians, to housekeeping, administrative and food services personnel their passion for providing high quality care is second to none. Our commitment to continuous quality improvement stands firm. We will provide safe care, quality care and service excellence today, and as we expand. A new hospital will mean that our staff, physicians and volunteers can continue to deliver exceptional care in a space designed for today s health care needs ERIC VANDEWALL, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHT Joseph Brant Hospital s new four-storey parking facility provides more than 820 parking spaces. This increase in parking availability means patients and their families have access to the spaces closest to the hospital just one example of our patient-first philosophy at Joseph Brant Hospital. A new Joseph Brant Hospital: Expanded services in a space designed to promote wellness and healing As one of Ontario s fastest growing communities, at Joseph Brant Hospital, we knew our plans for redevelopment had to include an expansion of our services, says Vandewall. We are proud to be able to add, for example, nine new operating rooms that will allow our surgeons to do additional surgical procedures which in turn will help decrease patient wait times. The new Joseph Brant Hospital is 3 4 years away. Looking ahead, our community will witness a complete transformation from the hospital building we know today. Supporting healing and wellness through design We have used wellness and healing design principles in designing our new hospital, continues Vandewall. Joseph Brant Hospital is situated in a beautiful location along the lake - nestled between views of the lake and the escarpment and with great access to natural green space. We are making the most of our surroundings in the design. Research shows that access to natural light and green space reduces stress and promotes 6 Joseph Brant Hospital

All inpatient rooms in the new tower will be filled with natural light, and have a view of the lake or the escarpment. Patients and families will have also access to walking paths, healing gardens and outdoor space. There will be a lot of opportunities to spend quality and quiet time with loved ones, both indoors and out, explains Vandewall. With an aging population, including a growing number of seniors in the Burlington and surrounding area, we have incorporated seniorfriendly and accessible design features that will benefit all patients and visitors. We ve put a special emphasis on contrasting colours, accessible light switches, nightlights, aids to get out of bed and to the washroom, and more. Wayfinding will be intuitive, and complemented by simple, understandable signs. Technology will be fully integrated throughout the building making the patient experience seamless, efficient, and most of all connected. Nurse call buttons in patient rooms will be directly connected to the mobile devices that each front line staff will be carrying for real time access to clinical staff, explains Nancy LaBelle, Interim Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Executive. Our new hospital is also being built to meet high environmental standards. Our goal is to build one of the most efficient hospitals, to ensure the sustainability of our building and minimize energy costs. The new Joseph Brant Hospital will be a hospital that doesn t feel like a hospital. Providing care in our new state-of-the-art hospital Joseph Brant Hospital is building a new stateof-the-art emergency department (ED) on the first floor of the new patient care tower. Our new ED has been designed with patients and families in mind, says Dr. Paul Faulkner, Chief of Emergency. The waiting area is designed as a series of separate waiting areas depending on acuity and type of crisis. We have built in quiet spaces for families, increased privacy with more individual rooms, and quick access to Diagnostic Imaging. Cancer Care will be centralized in our new building. Based on the healing environments research, our new chemotherapy area will be flooded with natural light and will offer patients unobstructed views of the lake, explains Dr. Callista Phillips, Medical Oncologist. The cancer clinical team centres will be decentralized, so nurses, physicians and other health care providers can be closer to patients. A satellite blood and specimen lab will be located within the clinic, so everything cancer patients need for their regular visits is in one location. 7

The new inpatient space is designed to ensure the best possible infection control practices, including having the ability to isolate patients and avoid overcrowding. In our new hospital, 70% of patient rooms will be private, compared to 15% of our rooms today, to meet the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care infection control standards. The seven-storey patient care tower will bring together most of Joseph Brant Hospital s clinical programs. The design is intentional outpatient programs will be strategically located so that related services are close together. Satellite Diagnostic Imaging and Labs will be built throughout the hospital, so patients can spend less time moving from one area to another. Overall, the layout will help reduce stress and create efficiencies. An enclosed footbridge will connect the new patient tower, the renovated hospital and the new parking garage, to create an integrated campus. Although there is a lot of change in the air, our commitment to providing the residents of Burlington and surrounding areas with safe care, quality care and service excellence remains unchanged. 8 Joseph Brant Hospital

How is the project funded? We are building our new hospital, together. OUR NEW ERA IN HEALTHCARE FOR THE BURLINGTON COMMUNITY IS HERE. WITH SUPPORT FROM THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT, THE CITY OF BURLINGTON AND GENEROUS DONORS, JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL S EXPANSION AND RENOVATION PROJECT IS WELL UNDERWAY. The new Joseph Brant Hospital is being made possible through a funding partnership between the Provincial Government and Joseph Brant Hospital. In simple terms, the provincial government provides approximately two-thirds of the funding and the hospital, with the support of the community, is responsible for raising the remaining one-third. The City of Burlington has committed $60 million towards the $120 million civic contribution. The remaining $60 million is being raised through Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation s Our New Era campaign the largest fundraising effort in the history of our hospital and in the City of Burlington. In just over two years, the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation has raised over $37 million. Together, we will be making the biggest investment in health care in Burlington s history. Together, our dream of building a hospital facility focused on wellness and health is becoming a reality. 10 Joseph Brant Hospital

MICHAEL LEE-CHIN DONATES $10M TO JOSEPH BRANT HOSPITAL On September 13, 2014, at the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation s Crystal Ball, Michael Lee-Chin announced his incredible gift of $10 million to our capital fundraising campaign. The gift announcement was made in a tent located on the hospital s back parking lot, the same spot where in the next few months; we will be breaking ground to build our new seven-storey hospital tower. This gift of $10 million is the largest gift in the City of Burlington s history as well as the largest gift our hospital has ever received. On behalf of the Hospital and Foundation, we would like to once again thank Michael Lee-Chin and his Family for their generous donation towards the building of our new hospital. They have been an inspiration to our staff, physicians, volunteers and to others in the community who have shown their support for the Our New Era campaign.
