Baltic School of Researchers (2007-2011) BONUS+ Series of courses and summer schools; BONUS young scientist club; young scientist feedback YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN THE SCOPE (2010-2011) BONUS Strategic Phase Human capacity building identified as one of four management priorities of BONUS (2012-2016 ->) BONUS Implementation Phase Bonus+ traditions continued. Support to human capacity building imbedded in each project. A set of support actions carried out directly by BONUS Secretariat within the management budget ERANET ERANET Plus Article 185
Key findings by the BONUS ERANET The most desired topical areas: Methodology; Integration between natural and socioeconomical sciences; Linking between physical and biological science Courses must have clear focus Courses must be 1-3 weeks long to support credit transfer A network to improve coordination and information is needed. BONUS+ HCB scheme is endorsed.

Collecting feedback about and from young scientists PHOTO BY KASPARS SILS: KIDS AT HEUREKA SCIENCE MUSEUM, HELSINKI In 2010, during the campaign of collecting the mid-term feedback from the BONUS+ projects, we asked coordinators to reflect about YS involvement and queried the early carrier scientists themselves. The YS response level was around 28% Coordinators recognized the support to joint training activities as the third most appreciated aspect of BONUS Secretariat work (the first two were organizing the BONUS Conferences and assisting with reporting).

Top list of potential programme-level HCB activities. PHOTO BY KASPARS SILS: KIDS AT HEUREKA SCIENCE MUSEUM, HELSINKI 1. Provide support grants for short-term (e.g. 1-3 months) mobility to another laboratory 2. Support initiatives of organizing highly specific training courses 3. Provide support grants to attend training courses outside BONUS 4. Organize training courses on generic knowledge and skills, e.g. science ethics, IPR etc. 5. Establish international BONUS PhD scholarship program
Some take home messages Early career scientists are a significant power of the Programme, their needs can not be neglected. Different YS groups (countries, disciplines etc.) have different needs - respect them! A joint programme provides lot of opportunities to support YS in various ways chase them! Collect the feedback it works both ways! Put aside some programme funds for joint support activities addressing YS this investment pays!
