E K U E D U C A T I O N A L T A L E N T S E A R C H P R O G R A M Talent Search News DECEMBER 2016 Family Career Day The Educational Talent Search (ETS) Program celebrated its annual ETS Family Career Day on Saturday, November 5, 2016 with over 70 participants and family members in attendance. Hosted on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), the morning interest sessions included: Financial Literacy and Career Planning. Andrew Abernathy, of Citizens Guaranty Bank, presented Financial Literacy. Career Opportunities was presented by Mandy Harrison, of EKU Career Services. Following the morning session, ETS treated participants to pizza and drinks. After lunch, participants had the opportunity to select items to take home from the Christian Appalachian Project Operation Sharing, which included free chips, crackers, cereal, protein bars, candy & soft drinks. Tickets for the EKU/Murray football game were provided to families, courtesy of the EKU Athletic Department. ETS Scholar, Kenton Step of Estill County was the winner of the Citizens Guaranty Bank (CGB) $25 Gift Card, presented by CGB Banker, Andrew Abernathy. Mandy Harrison of the EKU Career Services Office talks about the value of co-op, internships, and parttime work. ETS Participant Numbers & Recruitment As of December 6, 2016, 137 new middle school and high school participants have been accepted into the Educational Talent Search Program, since September 1st. This brings our participant count to 658. The program is funded to serve 765 participants, so recruitment will continue until all spaces are filled. (See more on page 2 about the participant s per county break-down). ETS Participants by Target Area & Target Schools Target area means a geographic area that may be served by the Talent Search project, but the target area does not receive the focused services as that of a target school. Garrard and Madison counties are target areas for our grant. Target school means a school designated by the ETS grant and is the focus of project services. Estill, Jackson & Lee County middle schools and high schools are designated as target schools. At the present time we have 129 participants on the roster for the Garrard & Madison County target areas, but this number may change. Any participant (in the target areas) who is not making an effort to participate by the end of December, will be withdrawn to allow space for those interested in services. The target area participant numbers can reduce the number of participants required in the target schools. Talent Search is required to serve 765 participants. Our current formula for determining the number of participants for the target schools is: 765 required participants minus target area participants = target school needs, divided by 3 target school counties As of December 6, 2016: 765-129 = 636/3 = 212 212 per target school county divided by 7 grades (6th-) = 30 participants per target school grade Target AREA Participant Numbers (as of December 6 2016) Target AREA Middle School Participants High School Participants Total Per Target Area Garrard County 25 20 45 Madison County 45 39 84 Total 70 57 129 Target Schools Estill County Middle & High Schools Jackson County Middle & High Schools Lee County Middle & High Schools Target SCHOOL Participant Numbers (as of December 6, 2016) 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th Total Per County Need 212 Per County 45 38 26 21 11 13 21 175 Need 37 more 20 30 16 20 19 14 27 146 Need 56 more 27 21 36 19 21 18 13 155 Need 57 more Total Per 92 89 78 60 51 46 61 477 150+ ETS Staff Activities Stats (September 1-December 6, 2016) 81 Classroom Guidance Workshops 83 Parent/Guardian Contacts 34 Small Groups 95 School Personnel Communications 29 Individual Sessions 24 Recruitment Presentations 1 Field Trip 51 Community/University/Career Contacts 1 Special Event 438 Initial Facebook Posts 1,257 Participant Contacts 13 School Program Assists Page 2 T ALENT S EAR CH NE WS
