The Ohio State University Butler County Extension Butler County 4-H News Update October 2014 Dear 4-H Members, Advisors & Friends, I hope everyone is enjoying the great fall weather. As the leaves turn various colors, let us all be reminded that fall harvest is just around the corner. Drivers should be on the lookout for large farm implements traveling on the roads. Farm implements need additional roadway space, so be prepared to slow down, pull to the side, or stop. Drivers in rural areas must remain alert to the possibility of encountering slow moving farm machines and be prepared to slow or stop to avoid a rear-end collision or striking a farm machine that is turning into a field or driveway. I hope this will be a safe harvest season for our farmers. As you read through the news update, please mark your calendar with some important dates coming up. If you have any questions, please contact me via email at harris.2184@osu.edu or by phone at (513) 785-6650.
Sincerely, Kevin Harris Extension Educator, Butler County 4-H Youth Development October Celebrations.. National 4-H Week / October 5 11, 2014 More than 6 million young people across the country will celebrate National 4-H week. I would like to encourage all 4-H families to share the benefits of 4-H with your friends and neighbors. The 4-H idea is very simple: help young people and their families gain beneficial skills needed to be proactive forces in their communities and develop ideas for a more innovative economy. National Teen Driver Safety Week / October 19 25, 2014 I would like to encourage teens to remember the 5 to Drive. Please honor the 5 rules below each time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle. No cell phones while driving No extra passengers No speeding No alcohol No driving or riding without a seat belt Volunteer Opportunities in October 4-H CARTEENS Youth and Adult Volunteers NEEDED!!! Do you have to complete community service learning hours to meet your high school graduation requirements? Are you interested in assisting your peers with a great cause? Are you interested in developing life skills like teamwork, self-responsibility, leadership, and cooperation? Are you looking for scholarships to assist with college expenses? In 2014 4-H CARTEENS provided $7,200 in scholarship to nine 4-H CARTEENS members that are currently attending college this fall. Then you might be interested in becoming a 4-H CARTEENS Volunteer? Both teens and adults are needed. Teens that serve as teachers must be 15.5 to 19 years old and must have a driving permit for at least 60 days.
The primary purpose of the 4-H CARTEENS program is to educate youth to have safe driving habits which will help to decrease the number of repeat juvenile traffic offenders. This is a great way to strengthen your life skills, make new friends, make a difference on the roads, learn the importance of volunteerism, and apply for scholarship opportunities. This will also look good on your annual report form and any job application. 4-H youth interested in becoming a volunteer are required to attend a CARTEENS program with a parent. At the end of the program both the 4-H youth and parent get to make the decision about the volunteer opportunity with CARTEENS. 4-H youth that sign up to volunteer with CARTEENS must commit to teaching at an assigned station twice a month. The program is scheduled this month on 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, and 10/29. The program begins at 6:15 pm. However, I would encourage you to come a little early to meet some of the current 4-H CARTEENS volunteers. Contact me at harris.2184@osu.edu or by phone at (513) 785-6650 for more information.
