Himalayan Institute Cameroon Total Health Program

Total Health Program Providing grassroots health education and curative treatments to rural villages

The Total Health Program serves the population in a unique way utilizing herbal medicine, natural health products, yoga therapy, lifestyle counseling, and widespread health education and awareness efforts. These health services shore up critical gaps in the current health system which is overburdened and is unable to address the underlying factors responsible for illness and poor health.

Our two-part model: Health Center Our Health Center and Mobile Clinic offer free consultations and affordable treatments Health Education Our Health Education classes and Awareness efforts work to increase health knowledge

Health Center The Total Health Center delivers holistic and preventative health solutions to isolated rural populations in Northwest Cameroon

Core Activities Health Consultations Pharmacy Services Mobile Health Clinics Complementing these activities are: o Health Consultant Training o Self-Treatment Kiosks o Certified Consultant Affiliates o Herbal Medicine Production

Consultations Our free health consultations give thousands of people access to care they otherwise could not afford o o o Private consultations at no charge An individualized treatment plan comprised of herbal medicine, homeopathy, yoga therapy, and behavioral and lifestyle counseling Integrated health education and free follow-up visits

Pharmacy Our Total Health products are safe, effective, and extremely affordable The Health Center pharmacy offers a range of products such as: o o herbal medicine, homeopathy, medicinal oil and rubs natural health products, tooth brushes, and reading glasses

Mobile Health Clinics Mobile Health Clinics bring health solutions directly to patients The health team includes a consultant, pharmacist, and public relations specialist o o The mobile unit visits 30+ groups on a quarterly cycle Each time that the Total Health Center mobile unit visits a community, 100 200 free consultations are given.

Health Consultant Training Our training program covers the Total Health philosophy with a strong emphasis on hands-on experience in basic public health education and dispensary services Consultants are trained in the communities most prevalent issues such as: o digestive tract ailments, joint pain and arthritis, cough and cold, fever, blood sugar problems, anxiety, and depression

Certified Consultant Affiliates Certified Consultant Affiliates expand the reach of the Health Center even farther into the community These individuals have taken part in our Health Consultant Training and have subsequently returned to their home villages to offer consultation and pharmacy services independently

Self-Treatment Kiosks For those who are unable to come to the Health Center, but are motivated to be proactive in treating and preventing illness, we have created Self-Treatment Kiosks The Kiosks are equipped with herbal medicines, select homeopathic remedies, medicinal oil and ointment, and tooth brushes as well as a symptomtreatment guide which allows patients to determine what medicine they need

Herbal Medicine Production The Total Health Center s herbal products are produced in Cameroon and use herbs grown locally This local manufacturing style is the first in the country and combines age-old treatments and modern production methods By growing medicinal herbs in the communities that need them, the Total Health Center provides affordable health options without being dependent on long-distance supply chains and creates income for the growers

Health Education Access to health knowledge and education is greatly lacking in the general population Our Health Education class and Awareness efforts are aimed at addressing this knowledge gap, significantly increasing health knowledge and improving long-term health outcomes

This education-based model is the first of its kind in the region, if not the entire nation, offering simple yet meaningful solutions that are realistically applicable for the people of Cameroon.

Health Classes Free classes are taught throughout the region by our trained Community Health Educators Hosted by hundreds of community partner organizations, typically attended by 50-100 individuals Classes include both lecture and interactive demonstrations and are designed to be easily understood and culturally appropriate

Awareness Our broad sensitization and awareness activities utilize radio, television, loudspeaker announcements, posters, marketing agents and other print media to reach tens of thousands The goal of our awareness efforts is to bring about large scale change by engaging the general population and creating a culture surrounding health

Outreach Developing partnership with social groups, schools, local businesses, traditional leaders, and local and national government our social infrastructure is a key aspect of our health work Outreach activities engage and mobilize the community, motivating them take part in educational classes and other Total Health Programs

Community Health Educator Training Our Community Health Educator Training is an intensive training course and hand-on teaching internship o Students are taught topics such as: basic public health, first aid, diet and nutrition, maternal and child health, and men s and women s health Upon completion, students are prepared to share their knowledge with the community and become certified as Community Health Educators

Health Impact Increasing the quality of life for the citizens of Cameroon Since 2009 we have reached tens of thousands of people

As a result of the Total Health Program we have seen that people have a greater capacity to discuss key health topics and a better understanding of the resources available to them in their community They are more apt to utilize the Total Health Center, and to be motivated to continue building and promoting better health awareness within their own families and community

Health Center Impact Filling critical gaps in the health system by providing treatments and by teaching people the benefits of prevention Mobile Health Clinics: creating a network of 30+ villages that now receive regular visits on a quarterly cycle Self-Treatment Kiosks: expanding access to Health products and are returning control of health to the people Health Consultant Training: producing limitless self-employment for our Certified Consultant Affiliates and giving communities access to vital local health resources

Health Education Impact Reaching 8,000 people directly in 2013 through community classes and an additional 80,000 through awareness activities Health knowledge has empowered individuals to make better decisions for themselves and their families People are significantly more likely to incorporate proper public health practices in their daily lives By increasing grassroots health knowledge, we are significantly increasing the quality of life and promoting a stronger and more vibrant community environment
