Possible steps for the establishment of a national monitoring and reporting system that includes the SDGs 1. Integration of SDGs into National Development Plan 2. Development of a monitoring and evaluation framework 3. Update/ Development of a national indicator framework 4. Gap assessment for indicators (of global and any new national indicators) 5. Gap assessment for data (data sources, methodologies, quality) 6. Identification of priorities for statistics (existing and new) in consultation with stakeholders 7. Development of a work plan for statistics, that incorporates an implementation plan for the SDG new requirements, using existing planning instruments and procedures 8. Country presentations: Establishment of a national SDG monitoring and reporting system All countries are requested to provide a summary presentation of 10 15 minutes under agenda item 7, covering the following aspects: 1. Incorporation of the SDG into national development plans 2. Development of a national monitoring and evaluation framework 3. Update/development of a national indicator framework (incorporation of the global SDG indicators into national monitoring framework) 4. National capacity gap assessment(s) 5. Identification of priorities 6. Development of work and implementation plan 7. Update of national strategies for the development of statistics (NSDS) Addis Ababa, 14 18 May 2018 3

Country presentations: Establishment of a national SDG monitoring and reporting system All countries are requested to provide a summary presentation of 10 15 minutes under agenda item 7, covering the following aspects: 8. Coordination and compilation: institutional arrangements, resources and coordination of the SDG indicators compilation within the national statistical system, establishment of the SDG indicators database 9. Activities of international agencies, and their projects underway in your country in the area of SDG monitoring. 10. First list of Dec 2015 Essential elements for the implementation of the SDG indicators on national level 1. Statistical legislation and Institutional arrangements (need for clear responsibilities) 2. Coordinate statistical activities 3. Increase awareness and interest, do advocacy (user producer dialogue, within NSS and with external users) 4. Understand the global indicators (definitions, data sources, methods) 5. Discuss and define priorities for the NSS (political process, user producer dialogue) 6. Define relationship between sub national (local), national, regional and global indicators 7. Domesticate/ adopt/ adept the SDGs 8. Assess your national capacities and gaps 9. Review compilation, reporting and dissemination processes 10. Build capacity for SDG monitoring at all levels 11. Review data quality, and compile metadata 12. Improve and integrate statistical compilation process 13. Review and learn to utilize new data sources (big data, administrative data) 14.
