Produced through a partnership with the Missouri Departments of Agriculture and Economic Development, the 4-H teens captured stories and footage as they toured the state s premier equine enterprises and educational facilities. The 2012 tour will focus on Kentucky. 4-H DREAM BIG LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE HELD in POLK COUNTY - FRI, NOV 4 TH SAT, NOV 5 TH Those with goals earn on average twice as much as the 84% of students who had no goals at all. The 3% of graduates who had clear, written goals earn, on average, 10 times as much as the other 97% of graduates all together. Which one are you? The average student travels through an unmapped and uncharted world with no road map. He or she simply figures things out as he or she goes along. One of the great benefits of goal setting is that goals enable you to control the direction of change in your life. Goals enable you to assure that the changes in your life are largely self-determined and self-directed. Goals enable you to instill meaning and purpose into everything you do. Join the 3% beginning Friday, November 4 th Saturday November 5th for the Dream Big Leadership Conference @ Good Samaritan Boys Ranch CLOVER KIDS CORNER Alison Copeland Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share, and work in groups, explore their interests, and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity, information or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing experiences that introduce 5- to 7-year olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing. The following activity allows children to taste test and compare results. Leaf Rubbing Activity Materials White paper, Crayons, Charcoal Directions Leaf rubbings demonstrate that plants contain capillaries that transport water throughout the plant to keep it hydrated. To make a leaf rubbing place a plain, white sheet of paper on top of a fresh leaf, and color over the surface of the paper with a crayon or charcoal. The impression of the leaf will show through onto the paper Source: Iowa State University Extension 4-H (www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/clover/models.htm)

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards You can gain statewide or national recognition for your 4-H participants who demonstrate outstanding volunteer community service by joining in the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a prestigious, independent awards program that recognizes young people in grades 5-12 on the basis of their volunteer activities. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Last year, 137 county 4-H programs selected honorees in this prestigious youth recognition program, and 17 4-H ers were among the 102 State Honorees for 2010. This recognition is extremely beneficial to 4-H ers who have performed exemplary acts of service in their communities and to 4-H as a whole. 4-H ers can apply online at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.principals.org/spirit. Applications must be submitted to the county 4-H office by October 15, 2011. A state-level judging committee will pick the top youth volunteers in each state and the District of Columbia, who will receive silver medallions, $1,000 awards, and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C., for national recognition events. In Washington, a national selection committee will name America s top 10 youth volunteers for 2011. PAGE 6 WEBSTER COUNTY CLOVER SAYINGS OCTOBER 2011 STATE NEWS.SERVICE-LEARNING When youth plan an activity, they are able to feel empowered to identify a community problem and decide on ways in which to address that problem. In reflecting on the activity, they are able to share their experience with others and make connections between their service activity and the larger community issues. When youth engage in long term community service, typically identified as a semester or longer, they are able to see the longer term effects of the service and make deeper connections within the community. Youth who are engaged in service learning are more likely to talk about political and community issues with other youth and adults than youth who do not participate.
