YPI Scotland: Judging Pack YPI is a programme of the Toskan Casale Foundation Operational manager and principal funder of YPI in Scotland ypiscotland.org.uk @ypi_scotland ypiscotland ypiscotland

Thank you very much for agreeing to act as a judge at the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) final presentations. We hope you enjoy watching the results of the hard work students have put in to the programme. Your opinions and constructive feedback are much appreciated and will help the students refine their presentation skills. Here you will find a brief description of YPI; some information about the judging process; and a copy of the judging sheet you will be asked to complete for each presentation. Funding Partners This publication is designed to provide accurate and authoritative information in regard to the subject matter covered. This publication is issued without warranty, responsibility or liability, express or implied, regarding the application and results of the subject matter.

What is YPI? Youth and Philanthropy Initiative The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an international programme that aims to develop community leaders. Participants are given a hands-on experience of philanthropy that provides them with the skills and awareness to make a positive difference in their community. YPI was founded in Toronto, Canada by the Toskan Casale Foundation, The Wood Foundation is the operational manager and principal funder of YPI in Scotland. Participating students work in small teams to research the needs of their local community and identify the local social service charity they believe is best placed to make a positive contribution. They then learn how to study the charity s management, budget, strategy and staffing arrangements. Students build relationships with representatives from their chosen charity and, following skills training in investigation and public speaking, present on the reasons their proposed charity is most deserving of support. The team judged to have made the most compelling and thorough presentation in each school wins a 3000 grant to award to their charity. During this process, students develop a range of transferable skills for life, learning and work including teamwork, communication and presentation skills. Outline of the Process One of the strongest attributes of YPI is the flexibility of the programme with respect to delivery timeline, participating year group and academic timetabling. With this in mind, we are not overly prescriptive in terms of how YPI aligns with the broader curriculum, as this is very much dependent upon each individual school context.

YPI Judging Criteria Aims of YPI Final Presentations To provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed during YPI and to raise awareness of their chosen local charities. To give participating students experience of speaking at a high profile event in front of a large number of people. To determine which team of students will be given the opportunity to grant 3000 to their chosen local charity. Judging Sheet and Criteria On the next page you will find the YPI Scotland Judging Sheet. You will be given 1 sheet per finalist team, and these are designed to support you in the judging process by outlining the YPI and Wood Foundation Judging Criteria. All the represented charities could benefit from a grant, your task is to assess who puts the best case forward for their chosen charity. The full judging criteria is outlined over page, but here are some criteria to look out for: Knowledge and Connection we are looking for students to have made a real connection with their chosen charity. We don t want YPI to be a classroom based exercise. - Did the students meet with the charity or establish meaningful contact with them? - Is it clear that the team have established a relationship with the charity, beyond conducting online research? Passion YPI is an opportunity for students to advocate on behalf of something that they care about. We want to see this passion coming through in their presentations! - Were the students able to put forward a convincing, emotive, passionate case for their chosen charity, while relating this to their chosen social issue? Business Case By the end of each presentation you should be able to fully understand and appreciate the local impact that the grant will have. - Is it clear that the students understand where the money will go and who will benefit? - Did students quantify the impact and explain clearly the difference the grant will make? (e.g. the grant will allow the drop in session to run an extra 2 nights a week for 6 months, which will have a positive impact on 1500 people) Creativity YPI is an opportunity for students to improve their confidence, presentation and team working skills. We want students to have explored innovate and engaging ways to get their message across. - Is it clear that the students have used their skills both as individuals and as a team to produce a creative and engaging presentation?

YPI Presentation Judging Sheet Charity Name: Social Issue Addressed: Does the Charity Meet the YPI Grant Requirements? Yes No Not Clear To be eligible for a YPI grant, a charity must be based in the local community and providing social services directly to people. Examples of ineligible charities would be groups focusing solely on medical research or services to animals. Note: Presentations are meant to be 10 minutes in length. Videos used in presentations should be original creations by students. Limited use of professional/charity-produced media is permitted, but whether their use was effective will be at the discretion of the judging panel. Very Effective Effective Neutral Not Effective Not Present Engaging the audience about the social issue Content of the Presentation - How Effective is the Team at: Demonstrating how the issue impacts people in the local community (short term/long term)? Demonstrating their knowledge of their chosen charity? Explaining the programmes and services offered by the charity? Showing how effective the charity is at using its resources? Demonstrating positive outcomes that the charity is creating for people in the community? Showing understanding of the charities long-term impact on the social issue? Demonstrating a connection with the social issue, and explaining how attitudes, behaviours and/or further actions can help address it? Demonstrating what they learned/ how they were personally impacted by charity contact? Explaining how the 3000 grant will be used by the charity (how will it impact the LOCAL community). Demonstrating how they used or will use their skills and/or time to do something helpful for the charity? Does the team make a passionate case for their chosen charity? Presentation Skills Is the presentation clear, effective and well-structured? Have they effectively added creative elements to their presentation? Do the speakers speak with clarity, confidence and enthusiasm, using eye contact and body language effectively? Are all team members actively involved? ypiscotland.org.uk
