Mason JEP Spring 2012 Symposia The Law & Economics of Crime and Punishment George Mason University, The Mason Inn Conference Center & Hotel Thursday, April 19-Saturday, April 21, 2012 This program will provide judges with a strong understanding of the economics of crime, punishment, and deterrence. Topics to be covered include: the economic analysis of imprisonment; empirical evidence on the economics of crime and deterrence; the erosion of mens rea; the tort-crime boundary and the economics of punititve damages; prosecutorial discretion; and the consequences of criminalization of corporate activity. Featuring: A. Mitchell Polinsky, Josephine Scott Crocker Professor of Law and Economics and Director, John M. Olin Program in Law and Economics; Professor (by courtesy) of Economics; Senior Fellow (by courtesy), Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Other presentations will feature leading law-and-economics scholars, former prosecutors, and prominent practitioners. The program will begin with early registration and an optional meet-and-greet reception on Thursday, April 19. Classes will be held all day Friday, April 20 and will conclude by 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. A hosted group dinner for participants and speakers will be held on Friday evening. PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to attend both spring symposia, the JEP will reserve and pay for your Saturday night stay. For those staying over, we will host an optional outing on Sunday afternoon to the Virginia countryside, with a tour of a local winery. Scientific Evidence in the Courts George Mason University, The Mason Inn Conference Center & Hotel Sunday, April 22-Tuesday, April 24, 2012 The program will begin with a foundational lecture on scientific methodology, featuring James S. Trefil, Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. Professor Trefil is renowned for his ability to convey complicated scientific concepts to legal thinkers. Prominent attorneys such as Bryan Blevins of Provost Umphrey, Mark Lanier of Houston, James Stengel of Orrick, John Beisner of Skadden will then participate in a series of mini-dabates. Topics to be covered include: low-dose exposure and causation; the examination of scientific evidence in emerging mass torts; medical monitoring; science-based regulation; benzene; asbestos; welding rods; hexavalent chromium; BPA; and hydraulic fracturing. The program will begin with early registration and an optional meetand-greet reception on Sunday, April 22. Classes will be held all day on Monday, April 23 and will conclude by noon on Tuesday, April 24. A hosted group dinner for participants and speakers will be held on Monday evening. www.masonjep.org

Mason JEP 2012 Economics Institutes Judges, Week 1 Sunday, March 18 - Friday, March 23, 2012 Sunday, May 6 - Friday, May 11, 2012 Sunday, September 23 - Friday, September 28, 2012 The Judges, Week 1, addresses fundamental issues that often are at the heart of legal disputes. Over a full week of intensive classroom lectures and discussions, judges are given a solid grounding in economics, finance and statistics. The practical relevance of these disciplines is emphasized through the analysis of numerous cases. Judges, Week 2 Chapman University Saturday, March 10 - Friday, March 16, 2012 University of Miami Saturday, December 1 - Friday, December 7, 2012 The Judges, Week 2, will build on the concepts learned during the Judges, Week 1. This program will provide more in-depth coverage of topics touched upon in Week 1 and include advanced topics such as accounting, finance, environmental economics, scientific methodology, entrepreneurship, and the financial crises and its aftermath. State judges must serve on general jurisdiction courts or higher. Judges from courts of limited jurisdiction (e.g., criminal courts or family courts) should not apply. Judges from certain specialized courts (e.g., tax courts or business courts) are welcome to apply. Judges must plan to stay on the bench for at least three years after completion of the program. For travel expenses exceeding $500, the JEP will reimburse 50% of the amount above $500 (e.g., for expenses totaling $750, the JEP will reimburse a total of $625 $500 plus half of the $250). For judges traveling from Alaska and Hawaii, the JEP will reimburse travel expenses up to $1,000. If travel expenses exceed $1,000, the JEP will reimburse 50% of the amount exceeding $1,000. Reimbursable travel expenses include: advance purchase coach airfare, ground transportation, and parking associated with travel to and from the program. Meals are not reimbursable. Lodging at the program hotel is included for the program nights. Judges traveling more than two (2) time zones may request an additional night if necessary to allow for full attendance at all program sessions.
