WHY DO WE NEED AHOUSE RULES?@ Every community and family needs guidelines to ensure that it continues to function and to be of value to its members. Rees Hall, as community and Afamily,@ is no exception. Some guidelines exist to preserve and enhance the unique mission and lifestyle of Union College and the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Others are simply to assist in the smooth operation of the residence hall and its constantly changing community. Policies which sometimes seem to limit you may eventually benefit you as well. We encourage you to develop mature responses toward the following guidelines. APPLIANCES One refrigerator and one microwave are permissible in each room. Refrigerators should not exceed 5.5 cubic feet. Appliances such as hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, electric fry pans and oil popcorn poppers are NOT permitted because of possible fire and grease damage. Irons are NOT to be used in your room. Ironing is available in the laundry rooms. Damage due to iron burns will result in a substantial charge. BABYSITTING Babysitting beyond closing hours should be cleared with the Dean prior to curfew. Babysitting in homes without a telephone is not allowed. Requests for overnight babysitting must be approved IN ADVANCE by a Dean. There is no babysitting allowed in the residence hall. FRESHMEN should not plan to request babysitting privileges beyond curfew. BICYCLES A limited number of bicycles may be kept in an indoor bicycle room. This room is located in the basement of the west wing. A few bicycle racks are also available in the courtyard but inclement weather is not always kind. We encourage you to lock your bicycle to insure its safety. Bicycles are NEVER to be left in hallways, stairwells, lounges, laundry rooms or the club room. The staff may confiscate illegally parked bicycles. BULLETIN BOARDS All material placed on the large bulletin board in the lobby is to be approved by a Dean. Please do not place materials in other areas of the lobby. The hall bulletin boards are for R. A. use only. BUNK BEDS Most rooms are now supplied with college-owned bunk beds. Because of minimal storage space, these beds ARE NOT TO BE MOVED from the assigned room at any time. You may bring your own bunk bed if the room you have been assigned does not have one. You will be notified if your room does not have a collegeowned bunk bed. CAMPUS LEAVES Requests for campus leaves must be approved before residents leave campus. Falsification of a campus leave is considered a matter of serious discipline. Overnight and weekend leaves are for the purpose of visiting your home, the home of a friend, or to attend college-approved activities. Leaves are occasionally approved in the Lincoln area when visiting with parents or faculty/staff members only. Students visiting homes other than their own should make prior arrangements with the host or hostess. Leaves should be completed on your computer at least 24 hours in advance of the time you plan to leave. (Credit for Vespers is given only if the leave has been completed 24 hours in advance). Occasionally the leave may not have been properly completed or the Dean may have a question regarding the leave. In completing your leave, make sure you give the phone number of the home you will be visiting; leaving your cellular phone number as your destination is not acceptable. Please check your computer to make certain your leave has been approved BEFORE leaving campus. Residents returning from weekend leaves are expected to be in the residence hall by 12:00 midnight Sunday. A residence hall Dean should be contacted in the event of an emergency or delayed arrival. CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE Upon checking out of the residence hall or when changing rooms it is necessary that rooms be properly checked out by a residence hall Dean or someone designated by her. This will require a

thorough cleaning of your share of the room, even if your roommate is staying. Failure to be checked out may result in loss of the $100 room deposit, and my include additional rent charges, as we have no way of taking you out of the computer system until you provide us with forwarding address information. Additional charges may be made for room damage which has occurred during your occupancy or if a room has not been thoroughly cleaned. CLOSING HOURS FRESHMEN 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Friday 1:00 a.m. Saturday night SOPHOMORES (24 + credit hours) 11:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday 11:00 p.m. Friday night 1:00 a.m. Saturday night JUNIORS (56 + credit hours) 12:00 midnight Sunday through Thursday 11:00 p.m. Friday night 2:00 a.m. Saturday night SENIORS (92+ credit hours) 1:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday 11:00 p.m. Friday night 2:00 a.m. Saturday night STUDENTS 22+ YEARS-OF-AGE and Seniors who qualify to live off campus No curfew however you still need to fill out a leave if you plan to be gone overnight. STUDENTS 21 YEARS-OF-AGE WHO ARE FRESHMEN OR SOPHOMORES Same closing hours as Juniors Residents who persist in being late may face restriction. The privilege of leaving the residence hall after room check is designed for one (1) trip of 30 minutes or less with sign-out/in at the front desk. After 12:00 midnight students must leave in a group. The misuse of afterhours sign-out privileges may result in disciplinary action. One=s general academic and citizenship standing will be a guide for residence hall Deans in considering sign-out privileges. COMPUTER ROOM AND PRINTER A computer and printer are located on 2nd East. Please report the lack of printer paper or malfunction to the Resident Assistant living on 2nd East - room 261. DEANS= AVAILABILITY A dean or R.A. is on duty from 8:30 a.m. until midnight. However, the particular dean you need may be off-duty, talking with another resident, on the phone, in a committee meeting, dealing with an emergency, etc. and may not be available to you. If you must see a particular dean and she is not available, you may leave her a note explaining why you need to see her or leave a message on her voice mail and she will get back to you at her earliest convenience. Between midnight and 8:30 a.m. a Dean is available for EMERGENCY situations. In that case, the desk receptionist will contact the Dean-on-duty or you may call 2535, NOT the dean s home extension. DESK SERVICE The desk operates 24 hours a day. Services offered include wake-up calls (for Rees Hall residents and guests only) and small change for laundry. Messages for residents are taken and placed in the resident=s mailbox.

DOORS, STAIRWELL The fire code makes it mandatory that stairwell doors not be propped open for any reason. The purpose is to prevent the spread of fire should one occur. DOORS, ROOM A memo board is the only acceptable item to be placed on your door. Please refrain from using inappropriate posters, pictures and other articles that may damage your door. DRESS Dress expectations at Union College are based upon Biblical standards of morality, modesty, good taste, and Seventh-day Adventist social convention. The college defines modestly dressed students as those who wear clothing which is not revealing, tight fitting, transparent, or too brief. Dresses, skirts, slacks and Bermuda/walking shorts should be in good taste. For water sports, it is expected that women wear modest one-piece swimsuits. In reverence for God, tank tops, mini skirts and shorts are not appropriate in the church for any meetings (e.g. Chapel, Week of Prayer, etc.). Sabbath dress in the church includes modest dresses or skirt/suit ensembles; dresses or tops without straps are not allowed. Appropriate grooming at Union includes regular personal hygiene with the expectation that hair, skin and teeth will kept clean and healthy. Appearance may include make-up and nail polish that is natural in appearance. Med alert tags and simple wedding bands are acceptable. Conspicuous jewelry is not appropriate. LOBBIES: HALLWAYS: REES HALL CHAPEL: Please be fully dressed at all times. Please be adequately dressed - not just a towel or underwear - at least until curfew. Remember that maintenance men may be in the building throughout the day. After curfew a robe is appropriate. Guest rooms are on resident floors and it is possible to encounter guests at any time. Come to worship respectfully dressed for worship. Night clothes and bare feet are not considered appropriate chapel wear. AND SAFETY Fire regulations require that stairwells and halls be free from obstruction at all times. Belongings left in these areas will be confiscated and a charge will be made for storage. Fire regulations do not permit the burning of candles, potpourri burners or incense. A $50 cash fine will be assessed for violation of this policy. The policy remains in effect should a power outage occur. This is a case when a flashlight becomes especially important. We ask that you NOT bring any halogen lamps. Because of numerous fires caused by these lamps in many areas of the country, they have been deemed by national organizations and other college residence halls as not safe. Lamps, other than halogen, are acceptable. PLEASE NOTE: (This is very important)! The fire marshal is requiring that NO EXTENSION CORDS be used. THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE EXTENSION IS A POWER FUSE STRIP. Please purchase one before you arrive should you need one. These are easy to find, inexpensive and could prevent a fire caused by the overheating of a regular extension cord. Please help us keep the residence hall safe. FIRE/FIRE DRILLS Students should acquaint themselves with the fire exit route chart posted on the back of each room door. Please use the route suggested. When a fire alarm sounds, the residence hall is to be vacated as rapidly as possible. Close all windows and your door, leaving the room door unlocked allowing the Resident Assistant to be certain that rooms are not occupied. Failure to leave the building during a fire/fire drill is against the law and will result in a $100 fine. Go to the designated meeting area that will be announced for each wing/floor. Remain in your designated meeting area until the alarm ceases to sound and your R. A. has made note of your presence. Fines may be levied for use of, or tampering with, fire protection equipment. Such activity is a violation of campus, city and state fire ordinances and will be handled by city authorities.

GENTLEMEN Rees Hall is not a coed residence hall. Gentlemen found anywhere in the residence hall (other than the front lobby) without specific permission from a Dean will be subject to discipline as well as the lady visited. Gentlemen are welcome to visit Rees Hall front lobby Sunday through Friday nights until 11:00 p.m. and Saturday night until 1:00 a.m. Special permission from a Dean is required to have a gentleman assist with heavy luggage or other large items. The same policy is in effect for ladies found in any area of the men=s residence halls other than the main lobbies, as well as the gentleman visited. GUEST ROOMS A limited number of rooms may be available to parents and guests. All reservations are made through the Ortner Center. Please call there (# 2545) for availability of guest rooms. There is a nominal fee to parents for guest rooms. PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN GUEST ROOMS AND GUESTS ARE ASKED TO PLEASE LEAVE THEIR PETS AT HOME. HEALTH SERVICES The Student Health Office, (2554) located in the lower level of the Dick Building, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon and two afternoons per week. See the student handbook for available services, procedures and hours. Rees Hall also has residence hall student nurses available for medical advice in the evenings. The front desk can put you in contact with them. HOUSE-SITTING PRIVILEGES Occasionally a local family or UC staff member may request that a student house-sit for them while they are away. House-sitting privileges are approved ONLY with prior arrangements made with the dean and are generally approved for upperclassmen only. When this privilege has been approved, please be sure to complete a leave on the computer. IN-LINE SKATES/SKATEBOARDS building on campus or on stairs. In-line skates are NOT allowed in the residence hall, in any other KEYS You are issued a key to your room when you arrive; a $5.00 deposit is made to your bill. Take good care of your key. Should you lose it, see the Cashier on the 5th floor of the Dick Building to pay for a new one. A receipt is necessary to obtain a new key from the Dean. We recommend that you keep your room door locked at all times while you are away from the room to avoid unwanted guests entering your room. Be sure to take your key with you. THERE IS A $1.00 CHARGE FOR OPENING A ROOM. This is payable to a RA at the time of the opening and we do not accept i.o.u=s. It is in your best interest to take your key with you at all times since there will not always be someone available to open your door. If you are locked out of your room, call the front desk and she will try to locate a RA for you. KITCHENETTES Kitchenettes are available on 2nd and 4th East and off the front lobby. Meats are not to be cooked in the residence hall. NEVER LEAVE FOOD UNATTENDED WHILE COOKING OR BAKING! USE THE EXHAUST FAN ABOVE THE STOVE WHILE PREPARING FOOD. There is a limited supply of utensils in the kitchenettes. They are for your use in the kitchen only. Do not take them to your room or leave them dirty. Please leave the kitchenette area clean when you leave so that other residents may enjoy using it. Food stored in kitchenette refrigerators is placed there at your own risk and must be clearly marked with your name and date. Meat and unmarked or old food left in kitchen refrigerators may be discarded by the housekeeper at her discretion. LAUNDRY FACILITIES Laundry rooms are located on each floor. Coin-operated washers and dryers are

available and require three quarters per load of laundry for each. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR LAUNDRY UNATTENDED and please remove promptly so the machines are ready for the next user. We are not responsible for items lost or damaged in washers and dryers. If a resident experiences a problem with a machine, leave a note at the desk for the Dean, stating the specific problem and the location and number of the machine. The electricity to the laundry rooms is turned off one-half hour before sundown on Friday evenings and service is restored after sundown on Saturday evening. LOBBY DECORUM Our front lobby is designed for short visits. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE FURNITURE. We ask that you keep your feet on the floor at all times and do not sit on the tables or backs of the furniture. PHYSICAL INTIMACIES between two people are private. Our lobby and front porch (as well as other areas on campus) are public areas to be enjoyed by all in a casual manner. Couples who violate the purpose of these areas may be banned from their use. PLEASE: NO sitting on laps or lying down on furniture or floors. You are responsible for your own behavior as well as that of your guest. Any staff member may speak with you regarding inappropriate behavior. Failure to comply will result in asking you to leave and/or discipline. PLEASE - NO FOOD OR DRINK AT ANYTIME IN ANY AREA OF THE LOBBY. MAIL Mail is received at the service desk of the residence hall. Your address to be given to your correspondents should be: Your name, Rees Hall - ROOM #, 3800 S. 48 th Street, Lincoln, NE 68506. A full address, including your room #, will ensure efficient service. You may place your outgoing correspondence in the mail slot beneath the mailboxes in the lobby. It is collected between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Mail is distributed to your mailbox generally after 1:00 p.m. Check your mailbox frequently for messages and announcements. Should mail belonging to someone else be placed in your box, please give it to the desk worker who will then place it in the correct box. If you change rooms, notify your loved ones and business mailers immediately. If you experience difficulty with your mailbox or mail service, notify the Dean on duty. Only the person presently working at the desk is allowed in the area behind the front desk. Please do not enter this area to pick up your mail or for any other reason. MUSIC/ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT If you have a stereo, CD player, TV, DVD player or radio, we encourage you to use appropriate volume levels so that your neighbors will not be disturbed; headphones are a dorm-friendly option. Also see the next section on ANoise.@ NEWS FLUSH FLASH This is a residence hall publication distributed weekly in the bathroom stalls (a place where all have time to read). Please read each one carefully for important announcements and items of interest. NOISE Living in close quarters with others, it becomes essential that each resident=s noise not be heard beyond her room. This includes sound equipment, musical instruments and voices of residents and visitors. Please refrain from taking your telephone into the hallway to talk as others in surrounding rooms are able to hear and it is a distraction from their studies or sleep. RUNNING IN ANY HALLWAY AT ANY TIME IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Because Rees Hall is committed to providing an atmosphere conducive to quiet study and mutual respect among residents, violators will be dealt with as follows: 1st Violation - VERBAL COUNSEL given by Rees Hall personnel 2nd Violation - LETTER OF WARNING 3rd Violation - LETTER OF DISCIPLINE (may include confiscation of equipment). FAILURE TO RESPOND TO DISCIPLINE COULD RESULT IN RESIDENCE HALL PROBATION. PEST CONTROL Spraying is done on a monthly basis. If you have specific problems with bugs, etc., contact the Dean on duty so that your room can be sprayed in a more thorough manner. Keeping your room clean, taking trash out in a timely manner, and keeping food in sealed containers should prevent your room from being invaded by insects or rodents.

PETS Fish in small tanks are the ONLY pets allowed in the residence hall. A $50 fine is charged for violation of this policy and Animal Control may be asked to take the animal. Parents and friends who visit are also asked to leave their pets at home. REPAIRS When a repair is needed in your room go to the Union College website and fill out a repair order. This is found under Campus Services, then under Plant Service. If you do not have access to a computer you may fill out a repair form at the front desk and ask the desk worker to place it in the Dean=s mailbox. All repairs will be reported as quickly as possible. DO NOT CALL PLANT SERVICES YOURSELF. THEY CANNOT RESPOND TO A CALL UNTIL AN OFFICIAL WORK ORDER HAS BEEN PLACED. We depend on you to notify a Dean should your repair not be completed in a timely fashion. RESIDENT ASSISTANTS R.A.s live on each floor of the residence hall. They are involved in programming to meet the needs of the residents. They work to create a sense of community, such as coordinating worships, hall parties, etc. Get to know your R.A. She is a good resource person. Resident Assistants are carefully selected and deserve your respect. Feel free to ask her to explain something you may not understand; she is available to help you in any way she can. ROOM CARE Roommates, to foster good relations and respect, should share the responsibilities of room care. Your schedule is no doubt busy but your schedule after college will also be busy. This is a good time to establish neatness as a priority and time-saver. A room that is not clean can be a harbor for bugs and other unwelcome creatures. Ladies who regularly keep an unclean room which is hazardous to health, will be counseled by residence hall personnel. ROOM CHANGES Room changes are not to be made without permission from a Dean. Proper arrangements must be made BEFORE moving. ROOM DAMAGE CHARGES Room left dirty $ 75 Broken window Large $100 Small $ 50 Painting of room by resident $100 Damaged screens $ 50 Broken beds, damaged desks, closets $ 75 Moving personal belongings including furniture and carpets (by residence hall staff) $ 50 These charges reflect the cost of repairing/cleaning your room and are not meant to be threatening. YOU are responsible for the condition or your room. ROOM DECOR You have opportunity to use your creative ability in decorating your room. Rooms cannot be painted every year so please use the bulletin boards and picture hangers which are already in the room as much as possible and resist the temptation to use nails, putty, scotch or plastic tape, paste-on hooks or anything else for your pictures and posters. The Deans have hooks you may obtain for pictures. Your R.A. has a supply of suitable poster tape, which is furnished free, for lightweight posters. IMPORTANT: ROOMS ARE NOT TO BE PAINTED BY RESIDENTS. WALLPAPER, WALLPAPER BORDERS AND/OR PAINTED STENCILS ARE NOT TO BE USED ON WALLS, CEILINGS OR FURNITURE AT ANY TIME. Usage of any of the above will result in a substantial fine.

(See Room Damage Charges). Please refrain from using contact paper on desks and chairs. The exterior of your door is not to be used to display posters, pictures, etc. Carpets Many students prefer to bring carpets. A 10'x13' carpet fits the room nicely unless you want wall-to-wall carpeting. In that case, you may wish to purchase carpet after your arrival in Lincoln. Carpets or tile blocks/linoleum are NOT to be tacked or glued to the floor. If you have a carpet you will need to bring a VACUUM. Mini-Blinds All Rees Hall rooms are equipped with mini-blinds. You may wish to bring some other type of window covering for accent but the installed mini-blinds must remain. Traverse rods are provided in all rooms. If you plan to use drapery rods other than the ones provided, you will need to supply them. The windows are 113" wide. If you want the window covering to come just below the window sill, the length is 51". FURNITURE AND OTHER DECORATIONS IN PUBLIC AREAS ARE TO REMAIN IN THOSE AREAS. IF FOUND IN A STUDENT ROOM, A FINE WILL BE LEVIED. SAFETY Safety is everyone=s responsibility. Room checks and other security measures are for your safety. Cameras are installed in Rees Hall parking areas and some doors. Listed below are a few tips that can assist you in your own personal safety. Safety at night * Go with someone * Stay away from isolated areas * Try to stay near lighted areas * Hold your purse or backpack tightly, close to your body * Respect campus curfew If you=re being followed: * Cross the street or change directions * Keep looking back so the person knows you can=t be surprised * Go to a well lighted area. Enter a store, house, residence hall, library - anywhere there are people. * Notice and remember as much as possible about the person so you can give a good description later. If you=re held up: * Don=t resist. No amount of money is worth risking your life. * Notify the local police and the dean-on-duty immediately. Where you live: * Lock your doors whenever you leave and keep careful track of your keys * Don=t leave a door unlocked for someone planning to come later * Keep blinds closed at night. Protect personal and College property: * Lock your door every time you leave * Engrave your valuables. * Don=t leave belongings unattended in laundry rooms, kitchenettes, lounges or hallways. * Lock bicycle * Don=t keep large amounts of money in your room. Open a local bank account. Don=t leave your purse out in plain sight. Please note: Rees Hall is not responsible for items taken.

In a car: * Keep doors locked while driving * Don=t hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers. * Lock valuables in trunk. * If car is disabled, remain in car with doors locked and open the door only for the police. * Park in well-lit areas and remember where you parked * Lock your car and take the key * Have keys in hand before you approach parking area * As you approach your parked car, check under the car and in the back seat before opening the door. Report any suspicious activity and vandalism immediately! SCREENS AND WINDOWS Screens are a part of your room inventory and are not to be removed or tampered with for any reason. (Screens which become loose from tampering allow insects to enter the room). A $50 charge will be assessed for removal of screens. Allowing your room to be used as an exit or entrance (for yourself or others) or to eject any object will result in disciplinary action. STORAGE A storage bin is provided in the basement for each room. This bin cannot be locked so we encourage you to not leave valuables there. We cannot be responsible for articles that may be taken from this room. The storage room is locked; on Monday and Thursday nights between the hours of 7:00 and 11:00 p.m. the R. A. on duty will be available to open it for your convenience. If you request to have the storage room open at another time, there will be a $5 charge. This area is for use during the school year only. We re sorry, but no summer storage is available anywhere in the residence hall. TELEPHONES Each room is equipped with telephone service. YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN TELEPHONE. The monthly service charge is included in your tuition. You may use your own credit calling card or you may arrange for a private long distance access code with Union College Information Systems. Your long distance access code should never be given to anyone and you should never, under any circumstances, use a code which is not your own. In consideration of your roommate, please talk quietly and limit late night calls. We ask that you refrain from taking your phone into the hallway to talk to avoid disturbing your neighbors. When using the hallway phone, please monitor your talking level to a near whisper. TELEVISION/VCR Students are permitted a TV/VCR/DVD in their room, and rooms are provided with cable hookups. When deciding whether to bring such a device to college, it is wise to consider the influence this distraction may have on you and your roommate s academics as well as your spiritual journeys. A television is also available in 2nd West Lounge where viewing of a particular program is subject to the vote of the majority. If you do bring a TV, etc., please be considerate of your neighbors and keep the volume low at all times or use headphones. VCR and DVD equipment should not be played during the Sabbath hours, with the exception of Biblically related material. TORNADO SAFETY In the case of a tornado warning, local sirens will sound. Residents will be alerted and should make their way to the residence hall basement as quickly as possible. An all- clear will indicate that it is safe to leave the basement. TRASH/TRASH CHUTES Chutes are located on each floor. Please empty your trash in the trash chutes and do not leave it in the laundry rooms, near the chutes, in the hallway or lounges. All trash must be contained in a tied bag. Boxes and other large items clog the chutes and are to be taken to the outside trash room.

VACATIONS As with overnight and weekend leaves, we ask that you complete a vacation leave on your computer at least 24 hours in advance of leaving campus. Rees Hall remains open during all vacations EXCEPT Christmas vacation. Exceptions during Christmas vacation are made only for those who live a long distance and are unable to go home or elsewhere, or those required by their supervisor to work.
