Departmental Safety Information Book Section 1 Introduction

Back of Section 1 Cover Page

Introduction Section 1 Introduction The Safety Information Book is intended to provide basic health, safety, and emergency response information to assist academic and administrative departments in: (1) Providing a healthy and safe environment for their faculty, staff, administrators, and students; and (2) Complying with appropriate regulations in Washington Administrative Code, Title 296, Safety and Health, and with other safety and environmental regulations (Department of Ecology, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). This safety book will arrive in sections. Some sections are provided in a final form. Other sections are plans which each department or organizational unit is to prepare. All departments are to have Sections 1 through 5. The remaining sections are to be incorporated into a department's book only if the activities covered are applicable. Each department head or center chairperson shall assemble a Safety Information Book as a means of organizing required safety information. The book is to be accessible to faculty, staff, and student workers in the department or center. The department head shall ensure that the required information is prepared. Where department safety manuals already exist, they may be included, revised, or replaced with the enclosed information. Plans and information provided by a department are to be updated periodically, generally on an annual basis, or sooner if activities change. The department head or center chairperson is responsible to disseminate appropriate information to employees in the department or center - faculty, staff, and student workers. Suggestions Depending on the physical arrangement of the department or center, several copies of the information book, placed at various locations, might be appropriate. One in each laboratory or other physically separate work/teaching area will ensure that the information is readily available to employees and students. Contact Environmental Health and Safety for copies. Sections of this document which are not applicable to a department or center may be excluded. Mark these sections in the Table of Contents with an "NA" for not applicable, or replace the Table of Contents with a customized version. This document is available on Microsoft Word for your use. On request, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety will assist by providing health and safety information, and will consult on specific departmental information required. For information, please call X3064. 1-1
