Tourism Excellence Program, Tourism Victoria The Tourism Industry Leadership Program provides the practical learning, capabilities and network tourism employees need to lead the industry. This innovative leadership program is a unique opportunity to bring together diverse groups of tourism professionals, ranging from small business operators to public sector managers, in in situ training tailored to regional needs. Designed specifically for the industry in partnership with industry bodies, the Tourism Industry Leadership Program stands apart from other programs by offering: Flexible format and content adaptable to suit any region or need Affordable packages for tourism businesses, operators and employees Uniquely dynamic learning environment Diversity of high profile presenters and significant industry support Long term network development and commitment to graduates Rigourous selection process and exclusive industry reputation PROGRAM GOALS Our vision is to bring affordable, industryleading education and development to tourism regions and operators across the country, creating leaders who will drive the future of the industry at the coal face. Foster collective leadership in the tourism industry The program creates a forum that connects aspiring leaders with senior tourism leaders and wider networks. By inviting operators from a variety of tourism regions and sectors and providing an environment to contribute ideas, knowledge and support, a shared sense of purpose and vision is cultivated. Provide practical learning opportunities for industry leaders A cutting edge curriculum and quality educators deliver best practice training. The program combines facilitated leadership workshops with candid presentations from senior leaders in tourism, government, business, environmental stewardship and motivation. Familiarisation tours in local and regional locations, and interaction with different sectors, moves learning out of the classroom and uses industry as a backdrop for learning. Enhance individual leadership capability This program is designed to give people the tools they need to be more effective leaders. Blending leadership theory and its practical application gives participants the background knowledge and necessary practice to apply learnings to real-life circumstances. With ongoing peer support and facilitator mentoring, participants gain confidence and master new skills. Generate commitment to sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship Through their involvement, participants commit to raising professional standards and environmental and social responsibility in their region. Graduates act as mentors for new entrants to the industry and grow awareness and passion for tourism. Entreprenurialism is encouraged and generated through innovative projects participants can create during the program to respond to challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

If the tourism industry is to be successful at achieving the aggressive targets we have set under the Tourism 2020 Strategy, we need to commit to continuous improvement of the skills and professionalism of those who work in our industry. The Tourism Industry Leadership Program delivers on this goal by developing leaders who will drive the future of tourism in Australia. Felicia Mariani, MD, Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) We are proud to be equipping the next generation of leaders with the passion, drive and skill to take the industry to the next level. Denise Castro, Industry Development Manager, Destination Melbourne RECOGNITION AND AWARDS Encourage understanding, cooperation and partnerships between industry and government A safe, open learning environment fosters trust and collaboration. Participants share personal and professional experiences and build enduring relationships across public and private sectors. Strengthen succession management within the industry A strong graduate network and ongoing learning opportunities supports career development. A Victoria University survey demonstrated positive impact on leadership skills and commitment to the industry (89% have gone on to build long term tourism careers after graduating from the flagship Melbourne program). The Tourism Industry Leadership Program is recognised by Tourism Victoria, Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) and Victorian Employer s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) as industry best practice. The program was developed from the highly successful Gippsland Tourism Industry Leadership Program (GTILP), established in 2006. GTILP set the benchmark for tourism leadership programs in Australia under the stewardship of Chris Buckingham, former Gippsland Tourism General Manager and Destination Melbourne CEO. The Melbourne Tourism Industry Leadership Program (MTILP) was launched in 2007 by Destination Melbourne to help Victoria reach its tourism potential by elevating and equipping future leaders. MTILP has outstanding participant and industry engagement and won the 2012 RACV Victorian Tourism Award for Best Training and Education Program. MTILP has received international recognition, inspiring a new leadership development program in Scotland. This strategic initiative will enable tourism leaders to work together to develop and deliver high quality visitor experience and grow tourism revenues in key destinations. Tourism Industry Leadership programs have also been delivered in regional Victoria in Goulburn River Valley, High Country, Murray Region and the Grampians. The strategic advice provided by Destination Melbourne, and TILP program leader Mel Neil, to its regional counterparts has been critical to their program development, with each adapted to suit the operating environment of its region. Effective tourism destinations need strong and visionary leadership to thrive. Tourism Excellence Program, Tourism Victoria The Tourism Industry Leadership Program develops strong, visionary leaders capable of managing themselves and others effectively, leading and navigating change and collaborating across industry sectors and levels. PROGRAM DESIGN The curriculum comprises up to 160 hours of education and training, combining theoretical studies with the practical application of leadership and hands-on industry knowledge. We can tailor the program to address specific leadership and industry development challenges of each region. Program content and design is flexible and responsive so that improvements can be made on the fly based on feedback to ensure it best meets participant needs. PROGRAM STRUCTURE The program involves multi-faceted learning spaced over six to nine months. In so doing, the program provides a platform from which they can envision and implement change successfully in their business. Skill development workshops A series of workshops equips participants with tourism industry knowledge and critical leadership skills such as emotional intelligence, goal setting, time management, influence and executive excellence. Participants use personal work experiences as live case studies to learn problem solving and crisis management. A total of 25 participants are selected via a competitive application and interview process, affirming the exclusive reputation of this program within the industry. We recommend a balance of public and private sector participants, as well as a good geographical spread from across the region and representation from a range of tourism industry sectors. Familiarisation tours Workshops are held in situ at leading visitor destinations, enhancing awareness of what each region has to offer and promoting sponsor accomodation and services. Venues are chosen to showcase and support the businesses of participants where possible. Guest speakers High profile and locally sourced guest speakers share real world knowledge and act as role models in tourism and related industries. Industry projects An opportunity exists for participants to collaborate on a project that will contribute to the growth of the tourism industry in the region. Past participants have devised creative solutions to industry challenges and produced tangible output using skills they learn in the program. This option can be built into the program to cement teams and generate innovation. ACCREDITATION PATHWAYS The Tourism Industry Leadership Program can act as an accreditation pathway towards nationally recognised qualifications, such as the Diploma of Tourism. This is achieved by collaborating with regional TAFEs and adapting program content and competency frameworks to meet specific requirements. This will enable graduates to apply for Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) after being awarded a Certificate of Completion from the Tourism Industry Leadership Program. The program can also further academic studies. Through partnership with Victoria University, MTILP is an accreditated unit of study in a post graduate qualification. Networking Participants experience ample opportunities to network with like-minded individuals and engage with senior managers and CEOs. Peer-to-peer learning Participants learn from discussion and each others experience, as much as from facilitators and guest speakers. The brains trust participants form through close relationships and knowledge sharing is an important resource during and after the program. Mentoring support Ongoing support is provided by facilitators whose business coaching experience and active participation in the industry gives them access to the latest information and expertise.
