Athletic News Daniel Veres, Athletic Director As our year is winding down in the spring sports, we are in the post season for almost all of our squads. It is a testament to all the athletes and coaches who have worked so hard to compete and excel this spring. The softball team earned the #3 seed for the area tournament, and their finish will determine their post-season fate next week. The team is peaking at the right time to make another run into the post season. The hard work in the weight room is paying off, and we have been a scrappy bunch this year. We have a nice balance of senior leadership and younger, talented players. The young ladies and Coach Toole have done a fantastic job, please make an effort to come out and support our Lady Knights! The baseball team fell short of making post season play this year in the toughest 4A area in the entire state. They played hard, but fell short. Coach Hudson did an admirable job stepping in for Coach Nolen this year. We have made some changes for the future with the baseball program Coach Blackwell is stepping back to his roots and will take over the leadership of the program. We feel like this is a great step for our program, and a fantastic step for our overall athletic community. There will be a lot of hard work put into the program, and we will look to continue to take steps forward! The soccer programs have continued to grow this season building off the last few years successes. Both teams have qualified for the post season. Coach Wolfe s boy s won the area for the third year in a row with a 6-0 record. We will enter the state playoffs riding a double-digit streak of wins as well as being ranked 7 th in the latest 4A-5A poll. The girls were able to once again secure the runner up position in our very tough area. Coach Aaron and the ladies have a great chance to keep moving forward with a favorable match up in the first round of the play-offs. The coaches have done a fantastic job taking the programs to the next level. Very big kudos to them and the hard-working kids! The golf and tennis teams have been competing well. The tennis team, really helped by an influx of young talent, was able to qualify for the State tournament down in Mobile for the second year in a row. Coach Patterson has a great opportunity to make great strides going into next few years with many more young ladies in the program. Golf has sectionals coming up very soon. The team has had its ups and downs as we have fewer golfers than the previous years. We will only be represented by individuals this year, but hopefully those students will progress through the stages of post-season play and travel to Florence this month. The track teams have also had a great year heading into sectionals. Coach Wright s squads have worked very hard this year to try and duplicate, and even exceed the great finishes we had last season at the section and State meets. We have won meets, and we are definitely peaking at the right time. Big finishes down the stretch from some of our strongest programs can make it a great cap to our year. Please come out, even if your student doesn t participate in sports here, and support and enjoy the great times here at Montgomery Catholic!
