LONGHORN ROCKETRY ASSOCIATION Corporate Involvement Opportunities 2017-2018 The University of Texas at Austin Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics 210 East 24 th Street Austin, TX 78712 http://www.longhornrocketry.org
Nicolas Diaz Project Manager Jeanette Harper Treasurer James Coffman Safety Officer Rujing Zha Public Relations Officer Frank Popelar Secretary Dear Corporate Representative, On behalf of the Longhorn Rocketry Association (LRA), I invite your company to be involved with our organization during the 2017-2018 school year. The LRA is a student-run organization at the University of Texas at Austin which designs, builds, and tests high-power rockets. Our team s central goal is to reach 100,000 ft. using a rocket built using only in-house designed components, from the airframe to the engine to the payload. In service of this goal, our team participates annually in the Spaceport America Cup (SAC), an international competition held in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. By participating in the LRA, members gain extensive hands-on experience with industry-standard design processes, fabrication techniques, and testing and launch procedures, in addition to a concrete foundation based on their degree coursework in the Cockrell School of Engineering. Your company s contribution to the team unlocks a range of marketing and involvement opportunities and allows the LRA to continue pursuing its longterm and short-term goals. I look forward to working together to determine the best involvement strategy for your company. Thank you for taking the time to consider supporting the LRA. Sincerely, Rujing Zha Public Relations Officer Rujingzha@gmail.com
LRA Projects 2017-2018 Vargur Vargur is the LRA s entry for the 2017 IREC Spaceport America Cup. Powered by an M-class solid fuel motor, Vargur will travel at sonic speeds and reach a maximum altitude of over 10,000 ft. while carrying our custom electronics payload, Muninn. Taurus/Capra Taurus will be LRA s first custom-built hybrid rocket engine. As a ground test development engine, Taurus will be used to develop a regression rate model, hone fabrication techniques and improve testing procedures in preparation for Capra, LRA s first flight-weight hybrid motor. Hybrid Engine Test Stand Consisting of a series of fluid systems control panels and a horizontal thrust structure, the hybrid engine test stand will analyze and operate the Taurus development engine during hot-fire tests. Using this test data, the LRA will be able to more accurately design Capra s constituent components. Staged Systems The Staged Systems team develops the serial staged rocket techniques necessary for LRA to reach its 100,000 ft. goal. Employing compressible CFD simulation techniques in the design process, the team has successfully designed, built and launched Nether, a prototype incorporating two stages.
Outreach and Education Certification Group Certification Group provides freshmen and sophomores a semester-long hands-on introduction to basic highpower rocketry which includes basic flight principles, computer-aided prototyping, and the composite rocket component fabrication. Participation in this group culminates in certification testing, sponsored by either Tripoli Rocketry Association (TRA) or the National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Certification Group members ready to launch L1/L2 certification rockets Community Events The LRA participates in UT Austin community outreach events, such as Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day and Explore UT. At these events, the LRA encourages interest in engineering and rocketry through hands-on activities such as miniature rocket construction and bottle rocket launches.
