LEWISBURG SUNRISE ROTARY Renee Gerringer and Ginnetta Reed, of the Ronald McDonald House of Danville Inc. were recent speakers at the Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club. Ms. Gerringer, development officer, explained that since its inception in 1981 t h e R o n a l d McDonald House has provided a Home Away from Home to more than 376,000 guests. She explained that the Ronald McDonald House, located on the Geisinger main campus, provides much more than just lodging and meals for families who have a critically ill child. They provide Day Guest services for families of children receiving outpatient services that just want to come to the house to relax or get something to eat. Fritz M. Heinemann, president of the Andy Russell Charitable Foundation, Central Pennsylvania Region, was the featured speaker at the Lewisburg Sunrise Rotary Club recently. Heinemann is currently helping to coordinate a $475,000 fund drive in order to construct an All Inclusive Playground in Selinsgrove which will accommodate special needs children regardless of their disability. COUDERSPORT ROTARY Coudersport Rotary was happy to host Tim Morey, an Education Specialist at DCNR to our December 18, 2017 meeting. Tim, a native of Potter County from Galeton, spoke about how, when the United States is seen by satellite, Cherry Springs Park is a black hole in the eastern half of the country. A NASA scientist staying at the Laurelwood Inn said the Park is one of the best places to see the sky and it can be found listed as one of the 7 best places to see the Milky Way. The Cherry Springs Night Sky Program brings visitors from China, South America, and all over the world specifically to come to the park. Paul Herzig, from the Laurelwood Inn in Coudersport, noted that Cherry Springs Park is an economic boon for our local economy. This year s Eclipse was a big family event at the Park. Tim also spoke to the Coudersport Rotary Club about the Winter Outings 2018 Program in Potter and Tioga Counties which includes hiking snowshoeing, ice fishing, and many other winter events. MILTON ROTARY CLUB The Milton Rotary Club donated $1,168 to Milton s Team Cambodia toward a goal of $5,500 to pay for new computers at the school which was built through the efforts of Milton students. Taking part in the presentation are, from left, Sarah Kowalski, club member; Mike Conn, Milton teacher; Sydney Telesky, vice president Team Cambodia; Saige Graham, president, Team Cambodia; Rick Coup, Rotary Club president; Stan Bower, club member and PDG; and Jeff Coup, club member and PDG. Four families with a total of 20 children benefited during the Christmas season from a Milton school district project in cooperation with the Milton Lions and Milton Rotary Club. The Lions provided toys for two families with seven children and the Rotary provided seven children with toys from two families. KEYSER ROTARY CLUB April Shapiro is Chair of the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program at Potomac State College of West Virginia University. Dr. Shapiro, who has been a nurse for 26 years, is licensed as a registered professional nurse in both West Virginia and Maryland. She earned her doctorate in nursing from the West Virginia University School of Nursing; her master's degree in nursing education from the University of Maryland at Baltimore; a master's degree in adult and technical education from Marshall University; her bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Maryland Baltimore County; and an associate's degree in nursing from Allegany College of Maryland. In her clinical practice, Shapiro has worked in areas of orthopedics, oncology and medical-surgical nursing. Shapiro previously served as the coordinator and department head at the Mineral County Technical Center, School of Practical Nursing, where she had been employed since 1998. Major Blevins (left) spoke recently to Keyser Rotary members. Major Blevins has served in seven different appointments with the Salvation Army including New River, Virginia; Wheeling, West Virginia, and Cumberland, Maryland, a career spanning more than 30 years. In Wheeling, Major Blevins and his wife Dianna served 7 years and were responsible for managing a 35 bed homeless shelter and commercial thrift store. 3
LEWISBURG-SUNSET ROTARY CLUB The Lewisburg Sunset Rotary Club recently celebrated their tenth anniversary, chartering 12/14/2007. The club highlighted Past Presidents who have served and significant projects that have been accomplished over the years. Peg Bouton, serving as one of the first Presidents, remembered collaborating with the American Red Cross, and sending boxes of personal items to our soldiers overseas and watching the club grow during it's first year in service to the community. Mary Mahoney- Ferster President in 2011-12 talked about the very active club and the multitude of projects undertaken and accomplished with everyone being involved; John Kador President in 2010-11 talked about the youth exchange program and the fact they remain in contact with their exchange student that year. Rick Wible, who served as President twice (2008-09 and 2014-15), spoke about The Frosty 5K, a signature Lewisburg Ice Festival project that he now chairs (and will be held February 3, 2018; registrations now on line). Rick Rautzhan, President 2009-10, and although he was unable to attend, the club recognized the meaningful project undertaken during his term - purchasing a protective dog vest for the Union County Sheriff's dog. This vest protects the dog when he is on duty in the field. President 2016-17, Fred Teichman, proudly spoke of youth exchange but also about the school bus that Sunset Rotary purchased for the Donald Heiter Community Center last summer. The school bus allows students to be promptly picked up from school, and allows travel for exciting educational field trips and outings. The club has kept a scrapbook of activities each year and these were available for members to remember the countless fundraisers and projects. RINGTOWN ROTARY Recently three Rotarians from the Ringtown Rotary Club flew to Ipiales, Columbia to visit Ringtown s outbound exchange student Morgan Beaver. Morgan is the granddaughter of Rotarian Susie and PDG Dick Drukker and the daughter of Rotarian Jennifer Beaver. Pictured below is Susie Drukker, having some fun with her daughter Jennifer, at her left, at Carnaval in Ipiales. During Carnavale, people run around spraying foam, throwing flour, and applying paint to the face of unsuspecting parade watchers. Accompanying Susie and her daughter Jennifer were Susie s husband PDG Dick Drukker and Jennifer s husband Phil. While there, they furnishing a local wrestling team with brand new singlets. They also gave a district pin to each member of the hosting Rotary Club. 4
SELINSGROVE ROTARY CLUB Joyce Hendricks, retired art teacher from the Selinsgrove school district presented a program about the Valley Players Association. Formed in 1970, their mission has always been to bring quality community theater to the greater Susquehanna Valley. Over the past 46 years they have done 138 productions and are always looking for new volunteers and actors. Their current production, Always a Bridesmaid will open in February at the Packer House in Sunbury. HANCOCK ROTARY CLUB MORE INFO FROM THE FRONT PAGE Early in the year, PDG of Rotary District 7350, and Hancock Rotary member, Melinda Golden, found the idea for the map in a 2015 Rotarian magazine about a club in southern Ohio painting a similar map for their community's students. Once a source for the map stencil was located, Melinda and Donna Wallizer wrote a Rotary District grant proposal to fund the stencil purchase and pay for paint. The grant was successful and work started on the first map at the Methodist Church location of the Good Shepherd Pre-School. Later in the year the second map was painted on the playground of the Hancock Elementary School. According to Melinda, "It took a lot of team effort to get the first map completed. Our Hancock fire company helped by power-washing the blacktop before painting began. The team did a dry-run, assembling the 270-pound stencil, at Dan Murphy's parking lot." Former Hancock Mayor, town Veterinarian, and Rotarian, Dan Murphy declared, "I think this is a wonderful creative project. Our Rotarian membership had fun working on the map, which offers endless possibilities for student outdoor learning. Now that we have the maps we will work toward incorporating various games and contests about history, geography, political science, and even the arts." "The initial response has been outstanding," he adds. "We are grateful to all who came together to make this project happen." The Hancock Rotary Club would be happy to share the outdoor learning for students' project by loaning the map stencils to other groups and towns with some caveats such as a security deposit. SHEPHERDSTOWN ROTARY The Shepherdstown Rotary Club recently presented its highest award, the Paul Harris Award, to four individuals. The awards were presented at the club's date weekly breakfast meeting at Shepherdstown's Bavarian Inn on December 19. BEDFORD SUNRISE ROTARY In mid-december last year and for the 15th year in a row, the Bedford Rotary Club completed a successful week of Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army, continuing our part as one of the top collecting organizations in the Bedford Area. Our 32 total hours of bell ringing during a cold week brought in nearly $2,500 bringing our 15 year total up to more than $35,000 for the Salvation Army. GALETON ROTARY CLUB Galeton Rotary Sponsors Four-Way Speech Contest Galeton High Schools Students On January 11, 2018 14 Galeton High School Juniors participated in the annual Galeton Rotary Four Way Speech Contest. Each of 14 students made a 4-7 minute presentation on the use of the Rotarian Four-Way Test as it may apply to their selected topic. The Four-Way Test defines important values and beliefs of Rotary International and include: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? All the high school juniors were free to select any topic which is timely, interesting and important as long as it is not profane, obscene, unpatriotic or racist. Sarah Graber, a teacher at Galeton High School was instrumental in training and coaching the students for a successful contest. Also, Peter Folk chaired the contest for Galeton Rotary. Contestants were evaluated on their presentation skill as well as a number of other abilities and assets. With the completion of the speeches all 14 contestants were given a certificate as well as Rotary coin with the Four-Way Test values and beliefs embossed on the reverse side of the coin. Three winners will be announced next week each of whom will receive a cash prize. The first place winner will be sent to the Rotary Regional contest in April. The winner of regional will then progress to the Rotary District Finals in May in Hershey, PA. The first place winner of District receives $1000 with the two runner ups each receiving $300. BLOOMSBURG ROTARY CLUB Rob Bromwell, pictured here, a Navy Vet and currently a member of the Army National Guard spoke to the Bloomsburg Rotary after Veterans' day. In 2017 Bromwell will have been called away from his regular employment and family for a total of six weeks. Rotarians and all Americans are grateful for the service of all who give up part or all of their lives for our safety. In other Bloomsburg Rotary news: the Bloomsburg Rotary, Bloomsburg High Interact and BU Rotaract Clubs served 99 meals at a recent Wesley Methodist Saturday Community Meal. John Green, Co-chair and Treasurer of the Town Pool Restoration, spoke to the Bloomsburg Rotary about the goals of the restoration effort and need for financial support from the community. The project would assure this valuable and popular facility remains a local treasure at the Town Park. 8
LEWISTOWN ROTARY CLUB John Pannizzo, local entrepreneur, real estate developer, community advocate, and a supporter of the Lewistown Rotary, has seen lots of changes in the 22 years since he acquired the Downtown OIP. His latest is the transfer in two weeks of JP Edwards to Aaron Amspacker. Most folks would just say they sold the business; however John s use of the word transfer appears to relate more to an entrusting rather than just selling. John said he had to find the right persons, who he found in Jillian and. Aaron Amspacker. That s the kind of person we need to make our community a great place to live! Capital Holdings, a real estate development concern consisting of John along with Chris Aumiller and Wade Curry, has done projects including the upper Walmart lot and the R&S Building. Their latest project involves the purchase of the Birch Hill facility from Standard Steel. Before beginning renovations, John says they looked at archived photos of the facility so to bring out its historical value. The original structure was quite impressive prior to being hidden behind false ceilings and draperies. One of the first things is to add a 250-person pavilion for all-season use for functions such as weddings, etc. John notes that the main floor, which can accommodate up to around 175 persons, would be ideal for meetings of organizations, such as Rotary! Renovations and the pavilion are projected to be done this spring. ELYSBURG ROTARY CLUB Left is Vice-President Gina Becker, Andy Fallon and President Anita Wasileski of the Elysburg Rotary Club. Andy Fallon has received a 2018 Rotary Peace Fellowship as part of the Rotary Peace Fellows program though host rotary district 2350 and sponsored through Elysburg Rotary Club. He will pursue a two-year Master s program in Peace and Conflict Studies in the Department of Conflict Research at the University of Uppsala in Sweden. He has previously worked with small grassroots peacebuilding and development organizations in Uganda with the Mennonite Central Committee and the United Movement to End Child Soldiering. He has a passion for increasing capacity of grassroots and community-based organizations in developing country contexts with support and training in proposal/grant development, research, and writing. While in Sweden, Andy plans to focus on the qualitative and quantitative methods of peace research in order to help smaller and mid-size organizations more effectively monitor and evaluate their peace programing and develop the research and evaluation capacity necessary to prove that their projects work. Andy knows that many community-based organizations with impactful programs lack research and evaluation capacity and are all too often unable to apply to many important funding opportunities. 9
EMPORIUM ROTARY CLUB Owners of Emporium s new Bed and Breakfast, The Hygrade Inn, James Wendel and David Karkoska spoke at the Emporium Rotary luncheon meeting January 16th. The Hygrade, located on West Fourth Street in Emporium, is currently under renovation and expected to open in early November, 2018. The Inn was named Hygrade which is the original name of Sylvania which started up in Emporium. Jim also spoke about a group of like-minded individuals and organizations in the community who have come together to form the Cameron County Community Action Partnership. Rotarian and Cost Accountant at Emporium Hardwoods, Chris McFall, pictured left, was the guest speaker at the Emporium Rotary luncheon meeting January 9 th. Chris shared details on the progress of rebuilding efforts at the facility after a fire struck ten months ago causing an estimated $7 million dollars in damage to the processing building known as the green mill. The mill is Emporium s 3 rd largest employer with 100 employees. Once completed, the mill will be the largest mill east of the Mississippi. ASHLAND ROTARY CLUB Donut Sale -Arrangements for the annual donut sale have been made with the Ashland Boyer s Market. Distribution will be at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall on Monday, February 12. The Ashland Rotary Club will sell the same varieties as last year: glazed, powdered, sugared, custard filled, white cream filled, jelly filled and plain vanilla cake cruller. All will be boxed in ½ dozen lots. The mixing of varieties within a box is not possible. The price per box is $4.00 for six donuts, the same as it has been for the past few years. STATE COLLEGE DOWNTOWN In an attempt to educate themselves prior to consideration of offering a satellite club, members of the State College/Downtown club invited representatives from Martinsburg and Bloomsburg, the two District 7360 clubs who have satellite clubs, to their January 11 meeting. AG Pam Wagoner and Leah Smith represented Martinsburg and PDG Dave Ford and Tony Zilz spoke on behalf of Bloomsburg. Both of these club have introduced a satellite club to help attract more members, especially individuals whose schedules don t allow them to attend the standard club meetings. The Satellite Clubs have helped the mother clubs with service events as well as sponsored their own events. More than 1,000 children visited the Schlow Centre Region Library to experience a reading of Caldecott Medal-winning children s book, The Polar Express. After the reading of the popular novel in the library, kids and their families were ushered outside for a brief trolley ride around downtown State College. The trolley transported them to the State College borough office. After they arrived, the children were invited to take a photo with Santa, could exchange a gold coin to spend at Santa s workshop, and made holiday cards. Our international student, Dominik, was able to join us along with his host parents. In 2018, we are ready to get started on the speech contest, RYLA, orphanage they volunteer with in Nigeria called the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage, considered the largest orphanage in that country. Kyle is a sophomore at Bishop Guilfoyle High School. He is very involved in community service in the diocese of Altoona Johnstown as well as student activities and athletics. Joey Elinski was selected as Johnsonburg Rotary Club student of the month for January. A senior at Johnsonburg Area High School where he has participated in football, wrestling, baseball and track. He also enjoys hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Joey will be starting a new job at St. Marys Tool and Die as a machinist. His future plans are to attend Penn College for manufacturing engineering and seek a job in this area. Congratulations to Joey on being selected for this honor.
