New Workshop Series Cultural Diversity Competency Series: Mikel Hogan, Ph.D., Professor Applied Anthropologist, Human Services Department, Chair The four-part Cultural Diversity Competency workshop will present and demonstrate four skills that are proactive ways of thinking about and communicating with culturally diverse people. The purpose of these four skills is to increase awareness and understanding, as well as to prevent, defuse and reduce conflicts. This model was developed by Dr. Hogan during her 25 years in the field of applied anthropology. Come join us as we discuss the first skill of Cultural Diversity Competence: Understanding culture as multilevel. We ll review the twelve categories of culture that can be applied to any situation to identify cultural dynamics at different levels: the personal, group, mainstream U.S. culture and organization culture. The series will have four sessions that will feature experiential learning, intellectual learning and references for further exploration and dialogue of specific cultural topics. Perez, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology/ Faculty Athletics Representative, CSUF Meredith Basil, Ph.D., Associate Director of Athletics/ Senior Woman Administrator, Director of Athletics Academic Services, CSUF Exploring the Multiple Marginalities of Student This presentation engages dialogue on the unique experiences of inter-collegiate student athletes, particularly the experiences of SA's of color and female SA s in terms of multiple marginalities, intersections and pressures. In doing so, the unique prospects, possibilities and contradictions of intercollegiate athletics toward the enhancement of student success will be discussed. Participants will learn: The value and role of performance evaluations as a performance management tool. How to prepare for the performance evaluation process. How to develop an evaluation that accurately reflects employee performance and motivates staff to excel. How to set effective goals. How to conduct performance evaluation meetings. Participants will: Learn strategies for preventing and responding to difficult behavior. Learn the procedures for reporting disruptive/ difficult students to Judicial Affairs and/or University Police. Learn about campus resources. Participate in a case study group exercise. CalPERS Retirement Workshop CalPERS will be presenting a workshop for California State University Fullerton employees nearing retirement. This workshop helps you plan and prepare for retirement. Attendees will learn more about CalPERS retirement benefits and the retirement process. Digging into Diversity: A Lunchtime Series on Diversity and Inclusivity Ioakim Boutakidis, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Child and Adolescent Studies and HHD Associate Dean of Student Success, CSUF Unpacking White Privilege: A Personal and Theoretical Examination This talk unpacks the concept of White privilege (or majority culture privilege) using personal anecdotes situated within the scholarly research on this topic. Toward that end, Dr. Boutakidis will explore how the personal and institutional interrelate across various settings (academics, law enforcement, family and peer) and suggest personal actions that can further social justice one interaction at a time.
