The convention has changes in store for you and your students. One change is the addition of a special intensive writing session taught by David Knight and Scott Winter on Saturday afternoon. The results of a survey led to another change. Most advisers asked for a schedule change, and that change is indicated in the tentative schedule on the left. Please be aware of all time changes, especially for contests. Students in contests will be allowed to use computers. Some printers will be available, but students may want to bring their own printers. Design contestants will carry in entries as at the national JEA/NSPA conventions. Please check the Write-Off Rules for more information and for any other rule changes. Sunday s sessions will cover all aspects of scholastic journalism. On-site critiques will also be Sunday. The convention will conclude Monday morning with the awards ceremony. Fun is also on the agenda. San Antonio has much to offer, including the Alamo, Sea World, El Mercado, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and the Riverwalk. For a chance to learn and to have fun, plan now to attend the. Places to go, things to do San Antonio is full of activities for everyone to enjoy. The following is a partial list of locations you can visit during your stay. The Alamo 300 Alamo Plaza - Mission San Antonio de Valero was established in 1718 as the city s first mission. The chapel, one of the most photographed facades in the nation, is all that remains of the original fort. Near the Chapel is the Long Barracks Museum and Library. The museum contains relics and mementos from the Republic of Texas and is highlighted by narrations on the fall of the Alamo. Battle for Texas Alamo Plaza at Blum Street (210) 413-4548 The Experience is a fully immersive and interactive adventure showcasing the world s most historically significant Alamo artifacts and connecting them through heart-racing multimedia re-enactments to the past they left behind. Guests will journey back in time as they experience the daily lives of early Texas settlers, the tensions leading up to the Texas Revolution, and the climactic battle in which the Alamo defenders sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom. For the first time, artifacts including Santa Anna s uniform, Bowie knives, and items owned by Davy Crockett will be displayed together in a thematic environment. Presented from both Texan and Mexican perspectives, visitors will experience what it was like to have been at The Alamo in a setting that captures the spectacle, heroism, and ultimate sacrifice of those who gave their lives for a cause they believed in. The 1.3 mile stretch of new walkways, landscaping, parks and public art along the meandering San Antonio River links several downtown historic, commercial and cultural institutions, including the San Antonio Museum of Art, Pearl (a restored former brewery and stables) and VFW Post 76, which is the oldest VFW Post in Texas. Briscoe Western Art Museum The Briscoe Western Art Museum is housed in the restored historic1930s art deco/neo classical former San Antonio Public Library. Today the Briscoe features nine galleries on three levels including the new, threestory Jack Guenther Pavilion which was designed by nationally recognized architecture firm Lake Flato. San Antonio The Saga A video collage by world renowned French artist Xavier de Richemont, the saga is a 24-minute collage of images as a tribute to the local culture and history which is set to music and is projected onto the facade of San Fernando Cathedral, 115 Main Plaza. Every effort will be made to honor your request for a specific room type; however, rooms are assigned on the day of arrival and types cannot be guaranteed. Reservations made after the cutoff date of Sept. 23, 2016, subject to the availability of rooms. In the event of a cancellation, you must notify the hotel at least 72 hours in advance of your scheduled arrival and obtain a cancellation number. In turn, the hotel will release your guarantee and refund your deposit. Deposits are forfeited on all no-shows and reservations cancelled within 72 hours prior to arrival. Reservations will be accepted after the Sept. 23 cutoff, based on availability. However, the block may sell out before that date, so make your reservations early. PARKING discounted parking is $18 plus tax per vehicle, per day. There is very limited parking for oversized vehicles; 6 4 clearance into self-parking garage. You can then make arrangements directly with the city and pay for the permit. Barbara will pick up the permit for you as a courtesy and have it at the front desk for your arrival. Do not wait until the last minute to do this.

NEW SATURDAY SPECIAL INTENSIVE WRITING SESSION David Knight and Scott Winter will present an Intensive Writing session 3-5 p.m. Saturday for students. New advisers and those with one year experience may also attend. Because of limited space, only the first 25 to sign up will be allowed to attend. Cost is $20 per person. Experienced advisers may sign up on a waiting list. Students will have priority for the session. If there are available spots after the deadline, other advisers may attend but must pay $20. Before the session, attendees must email either a feature story or column to info@taje.org, preferably a piece you are working on and not one you ve already published. At the top of the story/column, put your name, email and school. Save it as lastname_column/feature in Word. Deadline to email features/columns is Oct. 5. This session is at the same time as write-off contests. Schools can send no more than four students to this session. To ensure that everyone s time is equally enjoyable, we have established six rules of conduct which will be enforced during the convention by all advisers and hotel staff members. Violation of these rules will result in disciplinary action. 1. Students should be in their rooms making no excessive noise by midnight on Saturday and 11 p.m. on Sunday. The hotel reserves the right to remove any hotel guests who cause disruptions. Rudeness to hotel guests or hotel employees will not be tolerated. 2. No students will be admitted without an adviser or chaperone approved by the school. At least one chaperone/adviser is required for every 12 students. Advisers/chaperones assume responsibility for their students behavior and well-being during the convention. 3. Schools will be held liable for any damage done to hotel rooms or other facilities by students under their supervision. 4. Drinking or possessing alcoholic beverages or possession/use of illegal drugs is absolutely prohibited. 5. All students, chaperones, advisers and staff members are expected to wear their convention name badges at all times in the convention hotel. 6. officials reserve the right to declare all fees forfeited and to send delegates home at their own expense for violation of any or all of these rules of conduct. Advisers must be members of JEA to enter students in Uploaded Photo Contest competition, not the On-Site Photo contests. Payment of $10 per On-Site Photo entry. Payment of $5 per Photo Contest entry. Pre-registration is required for contests.. Name substitutions are allowed in pre-registered categories. Print or type all information. On-site photo competition Schools are limited to six entries. Students will be provided with a list of categories and will have three hours on Saturday in which to photograph. The contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Students must upload contest entries to tajecontest@gmail.com before the 5:30 p.m. deadline. Advisers should let students in the on-site photo contests select the photos they turn in to be judged. Part of the contest is judgment, being able to select the highest quality photos. Students must bring their own cameras and accessories. Students MAY NOT enter both Cell Phone Photography and On-Site Photography. Cell Phone Photography Schools may enter three students. Students will be given four categories and two and a half hours to shoot and upload photos. Students may enter two photos from any of the categories. Contestants will email their chosen photos to the web address given to contestants at the beginning of the contest. Students will be allowed to edit their photos but only inside their cell phones. Contest will be 2:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Students MAY NOT enter both Cell Phone Photography and On-Site Photography. Team scavenger hunt photo contest Teams of 3-5 students will use a single digital camera and go in search of photographs near the convention hotel. Teams will be given a list of items to photograph worth different point values. A maximum of 20 images will be submitted by the team, and the team with the highest point total will be named the winner. All photos must be taken with one camera. Payment of $25 per team. Uploaded photo contests Each student is limited to one entry per contest, but a student may enter more than one contest. Students should enter one example for their category with the exception of the portfolio entries. Portfolios should consist of at least three but no more than five photos per entry. Schools may enter three students per contest. Entries can be in black & white or color. Students do not need to attend the convention to enter uploaded contests, but a student from the school must be a registered convention delegate. See convention contest rules for specific rules. Entries will be entered online. Advisers must be members of JEA to enter students in these photo contests. Advisers should go to writeoffs.jea.org, log in then follow directions for entering photos. Photos must be no more than 2000 pixels in the long direction and no larger than 2MB saved as RGB (or grayscale), JPEG files. Photos may be color (RGB) or black-and-white (grayscale) or a combination of color and black-and-white. Captions must be included in the Description field. For instructions on how to enter the caption information, go to http://www.atpi.org/submission/. Advisers may register contestants with student email addresses so that students can log in and upload their own photos, or teachers may upload the photos for the students. DO NOT wait until the contest deadline to register students. DO NOT bring images to the convention. All critiques will be completed online. DO NOT mail the photographs. DO NOT submit images in which the content has been significantly digitally altered. Entries must be entered online no later than midnight Oct. 2. Online Package Schools may enter one team of up to three students. Students will have from 2:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 to complete the package on a given topic and post it to their school s website. See contest rules for a complete list of requirements.
