Year 2015 Newsletter As we bring 2015 to a close, it is with pride we recognize the significant advancements the Hong Kong Branch has made over the past 12 months. Sustainability was a hot topic this year, appearing in no fewer than four of our networking events, whether it is delivering a sustainable Hong Kong International Airport or building a sustainable value chain at Fuji Xerox or championing sustainable construction workforce management by the Construction Industry Council or enabling sustainable procurement at The Hong Kong Jockey Club. Aligning with CIPS s remit to promote high standards of integrity among our members, our annual workshop with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) continues to draw the largest interest from practitioners across Hong Kong, with the topic this year Maintaining an unimpeachable standard of integrity while fostering relationships with suppliers. Our other oversubscribed networking events include the visit to the world class cargo terminal at Cathay Pacific and our first seminar on retail buying and merchandising where we learned the latest practices from leading organisations such as BigboXX, Pandora and IKEA. For our first CPO Roundtable on 15 May 2015, we were honoured to have Dr. Richard Russill; creator of the Centre-Led Action Network organisational concept ( CLAN ); facilitate the discussion on transforming business performance and improving profitability using Procurement as a Catalyst among eight Chief Procurement Officers. This was on top of the Talk to CPO program, with senior procurement practitioners across Hong Kong. As the theme of our 2015 AGM Procurement Seminar ( The New Generation of Procurement ) suggests, the Branch is striving to attract young people into our profession, by raising awareness of procurement and supply as a career with exciting prospects. This is achieved through our annual CIPS Hong Kong Best Student Awards (now in its 13 th year) and by our various school talks at universities and colleges. Professional Development [ CPO Roundtable in Hong Kong on 15 May 2015 ] A CPO Roundtable, with the subject of Transforming Business Performance & Improving Profitability using Procurement as a Catalyst, was organized in Hong Kong by CIPS Hong Kong, facilitated by Dr. Richard Russill, a leading authority on supply chain management. Eight heads of procurement functions of various sizeable organizations in Hong Kong participated in the event. Dr. Russill started the discussion by sharing the following thought-provoking insights: Procurement s task role is to create and sustain the supply markets the business needs for it to succeed now and in future. Most company people are part of this process but do not know it. Those who do have hidden talents from which the company does not benefit. Training and development of procurement related competencies should not be limited to only procurement staff, but should be extended to internal users who are involved in procurement activities. To be a successful Procurement Leader, one should be equipped with not only the competence of procurement, but also possess a broad range of competence of other disciplines, including good business knowledge at the strategic level, stakeholder management skills, legal knowledge, financial knowledge, IT knowledge, and also harmonize these multi-disciplinary acumen into a single role. Business today poses tough questions: procurement can provide many of the answers but is often not positioned to do so effectively, if at all. Procurement s business role is to contribute to company strategy; then distil out its supply implications; then act to make strategy happens. If you re in business you re in procurement it s not discretionary. >> To share best practices among procurement leaders Page 9
