CALL FOR ENTRIES FLORIDA STATE FAIR Art Portfolio Contest for High School Seniors FAIR INFORMATION February 4 15, 2016 The Florida State Fair is so much more than rides, midway food & livestock exhibitions! The Florida Center hosts competitive exhibits of art, baking, horticulture, photography, textiles, winemaking and woodworking. More than 450,000 visitors are expected to come to the 2016 Florida State Fair. Many of those individuals come primarily to see the various exhibits that will be on display. CONTEST INFORMATION The highlight of the Fair s Youth Art Competitions is the Art Portfolio Contest for High School Seniors. This is an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your artwork, build your resume and of course win scholarship money for continuing your art education. A total of $10,000 in scholarship money will be awarded this year! First Place: $3500 Second Place: $2500 4 Awards of Merit: $1000 each If selected, you will not need to send original artwork, as we will be printing digital images of your work for the final exhibition. We look forward to exhibiting your fresh creative talent at the Fair from February 4 15, 2016. IMPORTANT DATES DEC 11: DEADLINE for ENTRIES. Flash Drive or CD/DVD Digital Portfolio and Application must be postmarked by December 11, 2015. Incomplete entries will not be accepted. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Open to high school seniors art students in the 12 th grade Students must be a Florida state resident or must reside in the state of Florida Students can apply from either public, charter, private or home schools SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS First Place: $3500 Second Place: $2500 Four Awards of Merit: $1000 each COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS All work must be original and completed within the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Art reproduced or rendered from the works of masters, from advertisements, materials from published sources, or from widely circulated photographs (other than the student s own photos) is NOT considered original. There is NO entry fee! Guidelines for jurying: Portfolio artwork shows creative and personal expression; demonstrates technical competency in the medium(s) presented; and communicates a clear visual intent and vision. Jury selection is done with regards to the entire body of work not on individual pieces of artwork. Award recipients will be selected by a juried committee consisting of artists, professional art curators and art educators. Artwork must be suitable for all audiences and should not contain profane words or obscene content. Work can be either 2-D or 3-D and be incorporated into any medium.! 2D work includes: painting in any media, drawing, pastels, pen & ink, photography, printmaking, digital art (computer generated art) and 2D mixed media.! 3D work includes: Sculpture, ceramics, wood, fiber arts, jewelry, metal work, glass and 3D mixed media. Size & Weight requirements (only if you plan to exhibit original artwork vs. digital prints)! If planning to exhibit digital prints from original artwork, the size of your artwork will not matter.! 2D work should not exceed 4 feet in any direction! 3D work should not exceed 2 feet in any direction and not weigh over 20 lbs. Larger pieces may be accepted with prior approval and delivery arrangements. The exhibit will adhere to collection standards; no work incorporating:! biological material such as animal or plant life,! electricity (except battery),! water (unless self contained), or! hazardous materials will be accepted. Most of the artwork in the exhibition will be digitally printed and displayed. If you would like to submit original artwork you can do so at this time. Delivery of original artwork from accepted entries from January 18-22 at the Florida State Fair in the Florida Center building from 9am 5pm. and will be returned by FEB 26. Accepted artworks will be exhibited at the Florida State Fair, between February 4-15, 2016. Students must submit a completed portfolio application. Illegible forms will not be accepted. A completed portfolio application consists of the following: APPLICATION ENTRY FORM CHECKLIST Flash drive or CD/DVD with at least 7, but not more than 10 images of original artwork. (No slides or photographs) Image preparation: Images must be of high enough resolution to be used to produce prints for the exhibition. Do not submit images taken with a camera phone or designated as web ready. Set camera at extra fine or fine resolution Images must be JPG files with the.jpg extension Image size should be no smaller than 2400 pixels (8 inches) on the shortest side. Images should be 300 DPI. Recommended color mode is RGB. Saved images should be oriented correctly for the viewer (Not upside down or sideways) Images that are of poor quality or improper resolution will not be accepted. Digital File names of images in this format: last name_image number.jpg For example: Brenda Gregory's image 3 would have a file name: gregory_3.jpg Flash drive or CD/DVD should be clearly labeled, on the front with the student name and phone number. For example: Do not state that the title or size of the piece is the same as above. A completed Portfolio Applications must be postmarked by Friday, December 11. No late or incomplete applications. Original work is not necessary for exhibition at the Fair, but if students would like to display original work they can. Students with accepted portfolios will receive detailed instructions for optional shipping or hand delivery of work to the Florida State Fair. At least 5 prints from the accepted portfolios will be chosen and displayed at the Florida State Fair in the Florida Center during the 2016 Fair, at the discretion of the juror and the Florida State Fair. All students, parents and teachers will be invited to the awards ceremony at the Florida State Fair grounds at a date and time to be announced. If unable to travel, award ceremony can also be seen online. There will be 6 scholarships awarded by the Florida State Fair. The scholarship must be used at an accredited art institution or college/university where the student is enrolled with an art related major/minor. The winners will be notified by phone prior to the opening of the Fair by January 29. Instructions and Scholarship Certificate will be discussed at that time. INSURANCE Artwork is exhibited at the risk of the artist. While care will be exercised in the handling of all works submitted, the Florida State Fair will not assume liability for loss or damage.
