FUTURE LIBRARY Innovation - Creativity - Social Networks Future Library 2016, All rights reserved Future Library SNAPSHOTS OF OUR WORK

About us WE ARE A NETWORK OF LIBRARIES OPEN TO EVERYONE... We believe passionately in the power of collaboration. We experiment with new ideas. We do not hesitate to cross disciplines and make links that are unusual; these are some of the key ingredients that the library of the future needs to have in order to positively affect our lives. We are transforming libraries. We are building a social network through which we promote online learning, information and interaction with all our members. With mentoring and skills development through workshops, seminars and our conference, as well as with access to resources, we support the library community in their effort to offer innovative services. We work with libraries from Greece, the Balkans and the rest of Europe. Step by step, we expand our network to other regions. We re headquartered in Veria, a small town in Northern Greece hosted in the award winning Veria Central Public Library and we also have offices in Athens. Future LIbrary is a non-profit, established in 2011, devoted to reinforcing the significance of libraries as knowledge, creativity, and interaction-promoting institutions. Libraries. A place for doers. Libraries are not only part of the information society and cultural life. They are also essential to the local economic activity. At times of financial downturn and political uncertainty, in a place of diminished options and blurred prospects, the Future Library Network of libraries and library lovers has paved new ways and created new choices, empowering and positively affecting life in local communities. Future Library emerged as a living community and constantly embraces new libraries and new cities. Day by day, more and more people of various ages and backgrounds, from pre-school toddlers with their parents, teenagers and university students, to freelancers, creative professionals, volunteers and even senior citizens connect to their local public libraries through this rapidly growing network, which at this moment consists of 140 Public and Municipal Libraries and approximately 7.000 members. After three years of fertile work in Greece, with funding from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Future Library has now received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to reach out to Balkan library cultures through the new project INELI-Balkans (International Network of Emerging Library Innovators in the Balkan region). The INELI-Balkans project will bring together library communities from: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYROM, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Greece to develop a sustainable network that will encourage collaborative innovation, e- learning and experimentation with new ideas. Harnessing the innovative potential available among library workers and capitalizing on the Future Library model, the INELI-Balkans will act as an incubator of the skills necessary to achieve library innovation and transformation in the Balkan region.

Library Innovators BEYOND GREECE: LAUNCH OF THE PROJECT INELI-BALKANS We build our network capacity through the following areas: Library needs and impact: Through the work of a group of country contacts (Ambassadors), INELI-Balkans takes in account the particularities of Balkan countries and will stay attuned to library issues at national level. Online leadership skills training: Through a dedicated e-learning platform with specialized content and with guidance from Mentors, the training focuses on the ability of emerging library Innovators to provide strategic planning and new service development. Innovation Awards: Selected trainees proposals for new projects and services will receive seed funding for their implementation. Networking events: Convenings and live training workshops, study visits and interaction with field experts enrich the experience of and the trust between project participants. INELI-Balkans sets up a framework for continuous pursuit of partnerships and co-funding, working with the library community, training partners, technology and service providers, and, above all, local creatives. Today across the Balkans, local communities, non-graduates, ethnic minorities and many other people, need more than ever strong public libraries that strive to equip them with the tools, knowledge and networks to succeed in a diversified economy. INELI-Balkans is envisaged as a unique platform that motivates and brings together new talents, grassroots movements and established organizations that use Balkan libraries to reinvent their communities. This enduring Balkan library partnership supports the openness of mind and human adaptability that are fundamental for designing solutions both for people and for social, cultural and economic growth.

Our work 2011 - TODAY In the next pages we present a photo story of some of the projects we have developed the last 4 years: Children Libraries Media Labs Staff training & our unconference photo left: the Future Library management team

Children libraries Creating experiences The project aimed at defining the role and functions of libraries taking into consideration the contemporary conditions and needs. With our interventions two related simple questions are answered: what can a child do in a library? and what can a library offer to a child? The project was implemented in 2012, in eight libraries in Central Macedonia.

In total, we have renovated 997 square meters and trained 16 librarians. We redesigned, refurbished and reequipped the: Kilkis Public Library Serres Public Library Kalamaria Municipal Library, Danilidios branch Kalamaria Municipal Library, Karabournaki branch Thessaloniki Municipal Library, AnoPoli branch Thessaloniki Municipal Library, Orestou branch Thessaloniki Municipal Library, Xirokrini branch Thessaloniki Municipal Library, Harilaou branch

Children Services We organized campaigns and services to promote reading and digital literacy

Media Labs Make, learn, play, relax, share are the five key words that describe the Media Labs spirit. Libraries have been totally transformed into modern, friendly and pleasant places. Co-working, brainstorming, relaxing, meeting, reading, web browsing spaces and even music studios and 3D printing, all together make up a completely different version of the library. The project was implemented in 2013 in 10 libraries.

10 Media Labs across Greece We redesigned, refurbished and re-equipped the libraries in 10 cities: Veria, Drama, Kozani, Trikala, Levadia, Nafpaktos, Corinth, Ilioupoli, Keratsini-Drapetsona & Chania.

Music Studio Libraries full of surprises. Users discover the potential of music studios with DJs and local music and radio producers.

Gen-Y The Media Labs welcome the Generation Y with workshops on technology, astronomy, aesthetics, photography, theatre, music, comics, yoga, even cooking!

Staff Training THE FUTURE LIBRARIAN We believe that the most effective way to ensure that the creative and innovative library leaders do not behave with the rationale of the past, is to give them the chance to interconnect, to discover new ideas, to experiment in new services and to learn from each other. We have developed seminars and workshops focusing on leadership, advocacy, creative skills. community engagement and children services. Implemented in 2012-2014 across Greece.

UNCONFERENCE & CREATIVITY MARATHON a gathering of library thinkers and doers. Almost 400 attendees make the trip from all corners of Greece, the Balkans, and Europe to participate in dozens of stages and workshops and engage in some manner, interaction, networking, and the exchange of ideas.

FUNDING Key sponsors of the Future Library are: the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs (kikpe.gr), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Union (Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Program).
