The Tank Post Email: post4209@flvfw.org Tom Preato, Editor 4805 NE 36th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34479 (352) 732-7744 MARCH/APRIL 2017 website: myvfw.org/fl/post4209 This month we have put the homeless veteran program in place. This program is in partnership with the Ocala Police Department. Instead of a homeless veteran in the City of Ocala being charged with vagrancy, they will be provided lodging at a local motel (after being verified by a police officer). The motel will then submit the invoice to the post for payment that will be taken out of our Relief fund. Our thanks to Past Post Commander Mike Coughlin for getting this program started. Nominations for elected officers we be accepted at the March general membership, with elections to follow in April. Attendance is encouraged and expected. The results of this election will determine the future direction of this post. We have nominated three teachers of the year and will recognize them at their school campus. If you would like to be part of this presentation, please contact Lawrence McManus at 867-0117. We have two JROTC awards and medals to present in March and April. The presentations will be at West Port HS (Army) and Forest HS (Air Force). If you would like to attend either of these presentations, contact Choskey White (Army) at 361-0270 or Lawrence McManus (USAF) at 867-0117. Shulkin sworn in as VA Secretary On Tuesday, Feb. 14, Dr. David J. Shulkin was sworn in as the secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In brief remarks after the swearing in ceremony, Shulkin said he was honored to have this opportunity to continue to serve Veterans. I have such a obligation and duty, that I feel to making sure that we give our Veterans everything that they deserve, he said. I think that we have a system that is doing terrific things with very dedicated people, but we all know we have a lot of work to do and that s what I plan to do as secretary. Born on an Army base, Shulkin s father was an Army psychiatrist and both grandfathers were Army Veterans. His paternal grandfather served as the chief pharmacist at the V.A. hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. As a young doctor, Shulkin trained in several V.A. hospitals and views his service at VA as a duty to give back to the men and women who served the nation. Prior to his confirmation as secretary, Shulkin served as VA s under secretary for Health for 18 months, leading the nation s largest integrated health care system. The US owns 10 aircraft carriers about the same as the entire world owns. The F-15 can flay at 1,900 mph (Mach 2.5). It is also the only aircraft to shoot down a satellite! The fastest speed recorded by a helicopter is around 248 mph. An Ace is a pilot who has shot down five or more enemy aircraft (friendlies don t count)! The policy change will extend limited online military exchange shopping privileges to all honorably discharged veterans of the military, DoD officials said in a news release. The shopping benefit will be effective this Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2017. While shopping privileges exclude the purchase of uniforms, alcohol and tobacco products, it includes the Exchange Services dynamic online retail environment known so well to service members and their families, the release said. The change follows careful analysis, coordination and strong public support, officials said in the release. We are excited to provide these benefits to honorably discharged veterans to recognize their service and welcome them home to their military family, said Peter Levine, performing the duties for the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. In addition, this initiative represents a low-risk, lowcost opportunity to help fund morale, welfare and recreation programs in support of service members and their families quality of life. And it s just the right thing to do, Levine added. The online benefit will also strengthen the exchanges online businesses to better serve current patrons. Inclusion of honorably discharged veterans would conservatively double the exchanges online presence, according to DoD officials, thereby improving the experience for all patrons through improved vendor terms, more competitive merchandise assortments and improved efficiencies. As a nation, we are grateful for the contributions of our service members, Levine said. Offering this lifetime online benefit is one small, tangible way the nation can say, Thank you to those who served with honor.
