Thursday, October 19 7:00-10:30 p.m. - Ambassadors of Harmony Spend the evening sitting in on a rehearsal with our district's international champion chorus, the Ambassadors of Harmony. See first hand what it's like for them to rehearse on a weekly basis. There will also be time for a Q&A session with the chorus leadership. Friday, October 20 9:00-10:00 a.m. - Judging Myths with Kevin Keller Have you ever heard contradictions and supposed truths about the judging system? Get the scoop directly from the top. Do you merely have questions about contest & judging? Bring questions, one and all. This will be an open forum where you can ask all the questions you wish about judging. Kevin Keller, former Music Category Specialist and C&J Chairman will answer them. 10:00-11:00 a.m. - Comedy (Dos, Don'ts and Doo Doos) with David McEachern Learn the various types of comedy and how they work. You will gain an understanding of the structural rules of comedy and the basis of funny. We will also study the mechanics of good comedy and generate awareness of why the pros are so consistently funny. Some time will also be spent on managing the creative process. If the teacher is terrible, you'll at least get to laugh at some funny videos. 10:00-11:00 a.m. - The Many Textures of the Voice with Sandi Wright Adding depth, lightness, air pressure or lift to the voice can create the many character moods a singer needs to effectively see and feel the music. This class uses recorded demonstrations of different familiar singers and explores where each places his voice to be most effective. Bring your voice as there will be lots of singing and class participation. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Math & Music with David Wright While all Barbershoppers recognize David Wright as an astounding arranger, let's not forget that in his day job he is Head of the Mathematics Department at Washington University. In this class, Dr. Wright will show not only how these worlds collide, but actually intermesh with each other. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Posture & Performance with Gene Spilker Among the postures we assume each day, which is the best for singing? How is this communicating the non-verbal aspect of your performance? This presentation is designed to connect the physiology of posture with the mechanisms for your best vocal production as well as suggest postures for non-verbal communication. Gene Spilker, a chiropractor, and a Performance category judge, mixes his two loves in one presentation. Find out how to use posture to give you a better performance. 12:00-1:15 p.m. - Directors Roundtable with Jim Henry (Ambassadors of Harmony), Jonny Moroni (Ambassadors of Harmony), Rob Mance (Central Standard), and Matt Webber (SmorgasChorus) Our district's top directors share ideas and strategies and investigate barriers and frustrations. September 2017 Serenade Page 6 Member Center, Barberscore, and More! By Mark Fuerniss CSD Secretary MEMBER CENTER A big change occurred mid-july with the replacement of the Society s ebiz system with Member Center. To access the new Member Center go to https://members.barbershop.org. Your username is the email address you have given the Society. Use your previous password, or change it if you wish. This new system places a lot more responsibility on individual members and chapters and takes away some of the functions that your district secretary could help you with in the past. The first noticeable change is access to the Society roster. Everyone belonging to the Society in the whole world can now be located on the All Members roster. There is a nice feature that allows you to search for a chapter if you happen to be traveling and need a barbershop fix. Searching by proximity results in a map with addresses and contacts of chapters in the area. Unfortunately, currently meeting night and times are not given for many chapters until chapters update the Visitors Info area with marketing info about meeting nights and times. Or, you will have to contact the chapter. The Chapter and District dues schedules are available to officers of that entity on the dues pricing tab which is on the left hand side once you choose the appropriate district/ chapter. The dues schedule for the Society and districts is still available online as well at: (www.barbershop.org Resources Documents Membership Membership Documents Society & District Dues Breakdowns. (http://www.barbershop.org/files/documents/membership/ District%20Dues%20Breakdown.pdf) Tutorials on Member Center can be found at http://help.barbershop.org. DUAL MEMBERS Another change that will affect dual members, there is now a $10 annual fee for each additional dual chapter members belong to. If you belong to Chapter A-123 and also are a dual member of chapters A-124 and A-125, you will be charged $20 per year for belonging to two additional chapters as a dual member. BARBERSCORE Barberscore is the new Contest Manager for the Barbershop Harmony Society; hopefully this site will be operational for choruses or quartets to enter our upcoming 2017 BHS Fall contests! Meanwhile, please ensure the information in the new BHS Member Center is correct: Each quartet should have a designated contact person with a valid email address. Every chapter should have one or more leaders designated as a Chapter Secretary - each with a valid email address. These will be the only individuals with the proper level of access rights into Barberscore for registering their quartet or chapter s chorus for entry into the contest. In addition, all competing members will need to be current with their BHS membership dues prior to the date of the contest. If you have any questions or concerns surrounding our District s Fall Convention - and specifically your chorus or quartet s pending entry into one of the contests - please contact Carter Combs, ctcombs10r@comcast.net, our Central States District Representative for Contest & Judging (DRCJ). Mark Fuerniss, Secretary Central States District lonniemark@navix.net Quartets and choruses must register for competition by September 29, 2017! To register, visit www.barberscore.com
