January / February 2014 Happy New Year Everyone! We had a great 2013 here at the Springdale Community Center, and I hope 2014 will be even better. I want to thank all who took an ornament off our giving tree to help one of our Springdale families have a very Merry Christmas. We have some very generous members. Despite the weather delay, our Holiday Luncheon was a success, and we had a great time. I am already looking forward to next year's! I would also like to thank all of those that have donated coffee and tea items to the senior lounge. They are enjoyed by many seniors as they visit the Community Center. In the coming year, we will have some of the old favorites returning with our This & That programs, luncheons, Dominoes, Bunco, and of course, Bingo. I am planning on throwing in some new games, programs and maybe even a surprise or two! Thanks again for a successful 2013, 2014 is looking to be even better, Happy New Year to All! Words from a Fitness Guru Happy New Year! It s that time of the year when everyone makes resolutions to be a better person, quit smoking, and lose weight. Unfortunately, if you are like many of us, by February you find that you are sneaking cigarettes or maybe a few extra pieces of candy. Well this year is going to be different because we re going to do things differently. That s right, I said we. The holidays were not too kind to my waist band, so instead of trading my jeans in for sweatpants, I m going to set a resolution to lose a little weight. The first mistake people make with their goals is that they aim too big. Losing 50 lbs. or quitting smoking cold turkey are huge goals so let s make them more attainable. If you need to lose weight, aim for dropping 10% of your body weight first. If you need to stop smoking, get some help. There are a lot of products to help you quit. One of the best and cheapest in the long run is hypnosis. I know it sounds far-fetched, and even I didn t believe it at first, but I know many people who have tried it, and they are still not smoking after several years. Another way that your resolution can go off track is not being specific enough. Just saying, I want to learn knitting or I want to exercise more is not enough. Be specific. I am attending the Wednesday night knitting class for the next eight weeks. Or, I want to increase my walking from Tuesday and Thursday to include Monday and Friday for 30 minutes each day. Put it on your calendar and treat it like a doctor s appointment. That way you feel like you can t miss it. The third reason people fail is that if something isn t working, they just quit everything. Just because the nicotine patch didn t work, doesn t mean nicotine gum won t. Or if your workout routine isn t producing the results you want, let a Fitness Team member know, and we ll design a new program for you. Evaluate what is going well and what isn t and make the necessary changes to keep going. And when you ve done all you can and you ve seen good results, make sure to reward yourself. Take some of the money you saved by quitting smoking and put it towards a nice dinner out. Or when you ve lost enough weight, buy a new pair of jeans and get rid of the old pairs for a little extra motivation! Hopefully with a few of these changes we ll soon be celebrating a Happy New You! From the comfort of the Community Center, step back in time and visit Fountain Square, the Carew Tower Complex, the Dixie Terminal Building, City Hall, Findlay Market, and Union Terminal just to name a few. This virtual tour uses old and current pictures of historic and memorable Cincinnati landmarks as well as a narrative that highlights the history and current status of the sites. Call 346-3910 or stop by the front desk to register by February 4. Hearing Loss Thursday, February 20 2:00 p.m. Free Programs! Have you noticed lately that it is difficult to hear well on the telephone, that you miss out on a group's discussion, or that you can't quite hear what the grandkids are saying to you? Then you don t want to miss this month's This & That presentation. Jane Warner of The Hearing Speech & Deaf Center of Greater Cincinnati will be at the Springdale Community Center on February 20. She will be talking about hearing loss in seniors and has a lot of useful information. Call 346-3910 or stop by the front desk to register by February 18. Springdale Parks & Recreation would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the families and friends of Community Center members Pat Armstrong, Frank Beiderbeck, Shirley Fastnacht and Ann Hern who recently passed away. Time to Party Gras! Thursday, February 27 11:30 a.m. Get out your beads, feathers, masks and hats and celebrate Mardi Gras with us. Get your taste buds ready for a Mardi Gras style cuisine of Po-Boy sandwiches, Red Beans & Rice, and dessert. Wear your purple, green, and gold and enjoy some good ole Dixieland and New Orleans music by musician Todd Hepburn. Maybe there will be some hurricanes and King Bread cupcakes too! Register with payment of $7.50 for members and $10.00 for guests by February 24. Tuesday February 18 7:00 p.m. February is National Wild Bird feeding Month! So to celebrate, Springdale's Gone Wild has invited the naturalist from Great Parks of Hamilton County to bring their Attracting Birds program to the Springdale Community Center. You will learn ways to attract various species of birds to your backyard for enjoyment this Spring and Summer. Come alone or bring the family to our National Wild Bird Feeding night at the Community Center. This free program is open to the public. 3 346-3910 GoPlay@springdale.org
