UN-NGO-IRENE Background The NGO Section facilitates consultation and effective cooperation and partnership between the United Nations and over 2500 NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC To contribute to the realization of diverse and geographically balanced NGO involvement envisaged by the Council in its Resolution 1996/31 To give opportunity to all NGOs in status to contribute to the work of ECOSOC in implementing the MDGs for a better world for all UN-NGO Informal Regional Network (IRENE) 3

UN- NGO-IRENE Purpose To enhance NGO contributions to the United Nations ECOSOC agenda and work in implementing the Millennium Declaration and MDGs to strengthen the Sector from within by building parity among its NGOs To provide access to up-to-date information and the benefits of ongoing communications through a technology-based system to enhance interactive exchange among NGOs and between NGOs and the UN To promote partnership initiatives and projects with the United Nations To strengthen national and regional organizations as effective participants in economic and social development (operationally and at the policy level) through a Network training component and a Capacity building programme 5

Establishment of the General Voluntary Trust Fund The ECOSOC in July 2002 adopted Decision E/2002/225 to establish a general trust fund in support of the UN-NGO- IRENE and especially its following activities: 1. Networking and exchange of information and experiences among NGOs 2. Capacity building and training activities for NGOs in the relevant areas of the Millennium Declaration and MDGs 3. Promotion of coordinated and integrated activities at all levels to generate partnership initiatives, projects, and programmes between governments, civil society, the private sector, and the United Nations 7

Capacity Building for UN-NGO-IRENE/Africa to strengthen UN Partnership with African CSOs and Governments to meet the MDGs 2. Promoting UN Partnership Initiatives with Leading African NGOs and Strengthening their Capacity to Enhance their Contributions to the MDGs for Human Security and Local Sustainable Development 14

UN-NGO-IRENE /Africa Mauritania UN-NGO-IRENE/Mauritania established April 2004 Training Session conducted in September 2004 and May 2005 by UN-NGO-IRENE / NGO Section in cooperation with UNDP and the Government to strengthen NGO capacity to formulate TC projects Formulation of an integrated pilot programme for poverty alleviation and sustainable development in Mauritania initiated by several national NGOs and UN agencies with the support of UN-NGO-IRENE Project Coordinator Contribution of French-Speaking African LDCs NGOs and Mauritania to the ECOSOC High-Level Segment of June/July 2004 and 2005 Regional and national workshops in April 2004 and May 2005 supported by the Project Coordinator of the UN-NGO-IRENE/ NGO-Section, UNDP and the Government 15

UN-NGO-IRENE/Africa E- Gender International Forum on the Impact of ICT on the Advancement of Women and Family Rights held by ATM in Tunisia, May 2004 with the support of an advisory mission of UN-NGO-IRENE/NGO Section NGO/Civil Society Survey and UN-NGO-IRENE International Forum on ICT and MDGs : Tunis, April 2005 Significant contributions made to the World Summit of Information Society (WSIS) of Nov. 2005 as well as the ECOSOC HLS of July 2005 A Declaration of Tunis formulated by the E-Gender Forum with UN-NGO-IRENE / NGO Section support was adopted and presented by ATM to the ECOSOC Coordination Segment of July 2004 Tunis Declaration on ICTs and MDGs presented to the ECOSOC HLS of 2005 Gender Declaration for Africa designed with help of UN-NGO-IRENE members and partners, was approved by the African Union, July 2004 The Declaration included provisions for the establishment of an African Trust Fund for Women 16

UN-NGO-IRENE / Arab Region Egypt Dubai High Level Consultations and Capacity Building Workshops to launch UN-NGO-IRENE/Arab Region scheduled for Feb. 2006 UN-NGO-IRENE / NGO Section participated in the Symposium of New York on The Role of Women in World Peace & the Role of Men and Boys in Gender Equality focusing on the Arab Region Support to the Arab International Women Forum (AIWF) Third Annual Conference Egypt, June 2004 on Women in the Arab World: Partners in the Community and on the World Stage 17

UN-NGO-IRENE/Asia (launched in March 2005 in Pakistan with China as first Regional Coordinator) Pakistan China India Japan Several national Networks established: UN-NGO-IRENE / China, India, Japan, and most recently Pakistan (October 2004) International Conference on Gender Mainstreaming and the MDGs supported by UN-NGO-IRENE / NGO Section and OESC held by APWA in Islamabad, Pakistan (28-30 March 2005) Islamabad Action Plan 18

UN-NGO-IRENE / Eastern Europe Romania Established in May 2003 in Bucharest, Romania with the support of UNDP/Romania Black Sea University Foundation (BSUF) selected to act as Regional Coordinator of the Network with 2 sub-regional ones: Association of Democratic initiatives ADI (FYR of Macedonia) and the Federation for Women and Family Planning (Poland) Preparatory work for the ECOSOC HLS of July 2005 and 2006 with the lead of BSUF and ADI 20

UN-NGO-IRENE / Western Europe to be launched in 2005/2006 Belgium France Italy Spain UN-NGO-IRENE/NGO Section assisted FPSC to formulate a project document on integrated rural development for several developing countries (North Africa and middle East) to be submitted for funding UN-NGO-IRENE/NGO Section contributed to a Conference on Migration, Microfinance and Education and the Role of Euro-Arab Woman held in Madrid, Spain, September 2004 by the Foundation for Social Promotion of Culture (FPSC) and READI (a partner of UN-NGO-IRENE) FPSC participated in the HLS of 2005 and made a statement on evaluation process of its activities considering their impact on MDGs with the help of the IRENE project Coordinator 21

UN-NGO-IRENE / Western Europe to be launched in 2005/2006 BELGIUM FRANCE SPAIN ITALY - UN-NGO-IRENE/NGO Section Mission to Brussels in 2004 for : a Seminar on the contribution of CSOs to the work of WTO organized by the European Economic and Social Committee a Conference on the Role of NGOs in the resolution of international problems hosted by the International Society for Military Law - UN-NGO-IRENE/NGO Section Mission to Rome, Sept. 2004 and 2005 to participate in FORMIT Workshops organized for non G8 member states and enhance their contribution to the ECOSOC HLS - Meeting in 2006 with FPSC to establish UN-NGO-IRENE in Spain 22

UN-NGO-IRENE/Latin America (To be launched in 2005) Brazil Joint initiative of the Regional Coordinator, WFO the World Family Organization & UN-NGO-IRENE /NGO Section to hold a World Family Summit (WFS) in Sanya, China in December, 2004 With extensive support from UN-NGO-IRENE /NGO Section, a World Declaration for a Comprehensive Family Policy - Achieving the Millennium Declaration With and For the Family was formulated and adopted by more than 300 participants Latin American and Caribbean Seminar Partnerships for a New Era: Achieving the MDGs held in Chile, June 2004 by UN-NGO-IRENE/partner, CONGO 23

Networking, Website and Update UN-NGO-IRENE website, in partnership with UNPAN: www.unpan.org/ngo.asp UN-NGO-IRENE Update, a monthly E-Newsletter distributed to all NGOs in consultative status as well as to UN-NGO- IRENE members and partners (21 issues released) Project Capacity building for the UN-NGO-IRENE/Africa to strengthen United Nations Partnerships with African Civil Society Organizations and Governments to meet MDGs includes a large networking component crucial to the full operation and realization of UN-NGO-IRENE www.unpan.org/ngo.asp 26

Fundraising Establishment of the General Voluntary Trust Fund (E/2002/225) at the request of the NGO Committee in support of UN-NGO-IRENE The Government of Turkey contributed with an amount of US $10,000 to the Trust Fund. Contribution of Other Committee Members are highly appreciated Several technical cooperation projects (10) designed and formulated by leading NGOs worldwide with UN-NGO-IRENE/NGO Section advisory services and support to implement strategic action plans of different UN- NGO-IRENE national and regional networks. These projects are or will be proposed for funding to potential interested donors (See list in the progress report of UN-NGO-IRENE) 27
