Anderida Adolescent Care Care Home Service 2 Woodlands Kindeace Invergordon IV18 0LL Telephone: 01862 842713 Type of inspection: Announced (short notice) Inspection completed on: 21 July 2017 Service provided by: Anderida Adolescent Care Limited Service provider number: SP2003003251 Care service number: CS2004085988

About the service The Care Inspectorate regulates care services in Scotland. Information about all care services is available on our website at www.careinspectorate.com This service registered with the Care Inspectorate on 1 April 2011. Anderida Adolescent Care is registered to provide a care service for a maximum of two young people between the ages of 11 and 18. The property it owns and manages is known as Kindeace and will be referred to by this name throughout the report. Anderida Adolescent Care Limited own and manage other care resources in England. The statement of purpose for Kindeace includes the following: The aim of Kindeace is threefold, assessment and stabilisation, crisis intervention and holiday and reward. The service does not operate on a permanent basis; young people stay for a maximum of 28 days unless otherwise agreed with the Care Inspectorate. What people told us When we spoke with young people we were told that they were satisfied with the care that was being provided. Young people told us that they felt safe and that they had a good relationship with the staff team. Young people did not identify any issues other than the quality of the bed that was provided. We have highlighted this as an area for improvement in our report. Self assessment The service was not asked to complete a self assessment in advance of the inspection. We looked at their own improvement plan and quality assurance paperwork. These demonstrated their priorities for development and how they were monitoring the quality of the provision within the service. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 5 - Very Good 3 - Adequate not assessed not assessed What the service does well Staff at Anderida continue to provide a very good level of support to young people. page 2 of 7

ratios are well organised and additional staff assist when required. The two to one staffing levels work well to ensure young people are kept safe. Staff receive good training and are skilled and experienced. Training is carried out on a regular basis to ensure staff are kept up to date with current legislation or practice. There was plenty activities for young people to take part in and this included going for walks or attending local resources such as swimming. Young people identified what activities they wanted to do and this was usually based on previous hobbies or interests. There was a good choice of food and once a week food was selected from different countries for young people to try. Young people were encouraged to take part in the purchase of food and in the cooking of food. Young people were registered with a local GP and other necessary health care professionals. There was a place to keep medication secure. Any medication administered was recorded by staff. Young people were encouraged to take part in education and staff worked hard to promote the importance of this. There was a Care Plan in place for young people. The Care Plan identified all essential information, for example, contact details of family, GP and other health care professionals. There was appropriate risk assessments in place and this included risk directly relating to young people and environmental risks. There was good interaction between young people and staff and it was clear to us that young people were comfortable in the presence of the staff team. Young people who are accommodated at Kindeace are there on a short-term basis. The accommodation is a chalet and is situated in a wooded area deep in the country side. The accommodation is ideal for its purpose in that it provides young people with peace and tranquillity but also access to local facilities. What the service could do better Although there was a Care Plan in place we would like to see more evidence that young people had been involved when this was drawn up. Young people should also be involved when risk assessments are drawn up to enable them to identify what they perceive as risk and how this can be reduced. There was good progress being made to improve the outside areas of the accommodation and we noted that some internal work had also been carried out. However, this needs to continue to make the accommodation more homely. page 3 of 7

We noted that some new furniture had been purchased and this included new beds, tables and chairs. However, we were concerned that the bedroom allocated to young people was very small and did not contain any hanging space for clothing. We also noted that the new mattress that had been purchased for young people was of poor quality. This resulted in a very uncomfortable bed. We spoke to the staff about our concerns on the day of our visit. We also listened to the comments made by young people who confirmed that this was an area that required immediate attention. We were happy to hear that a memory foam topper had been purchased soon after our visit and we were satisfied that the service had taken immediate action to address our concerns. However, the service need to ensure that there is hanging space available for young people's clothing and this may include looking at other areas of the accommodation. There were two settees in the lounge area and these were in a very poor condition. We spoke to staff about this and also spoke with the manager of the service. We were informed that new settees were on order and would soon replace the old ones. Again, the service took quick action to address our concerns. Access to the accommodation was in a very poor state of repair. There was large pot holes in the driveway and this made it quite unsafe for a vehicle to travel on. We discussed this with the staff and were told that this was a shared driveway and that discussion was taking place with other users of accommodation in the vicinity to address this. The service should continue to negotiate with other home owners to ensure there is an improvement in the driveway. All in all, although we have highlighted areas that need to be improved on with regards to the environment we recognised that the accommodation is of a short-term nature and not in use for the entire year.
