East TN Wraps Up its 3rd Season T he Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, Anderson County Schools, Oak Ridge Schools, and Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS) have wrapped up another successful season of Dream It. Do It. East Tennessee. Using GoPro cameras provided by CNS, six teams of eighth graders were paired with area industries to create videos to tell the companies stories. These videos were then posted online for public voting. What was the grand prize for the winning team? Each team member and teacher received GoPro cameras that were provided by CNS. This year s participant teams included: Clinton Middle School and Techmer PM, Jefferson Middle School and Clayton Homes, Lake City Middle School and MAGNA, Norris Middle School and Protomet, Norwood Middle School and AISIN, and Robertsville Middle School and SL Tennessee. Clinton City Schools also participated in the event for the first time by creating websites that represented the manufacturing companies. An award ceremony and celebration was held on May 8, 2018 at CNS New Hope Center. With over 4,000 votes total- the competition was fierce. DREAM IT Continued on Page 4 Chamber of Commerce to host the 7th Annual Tribute to Business Dinner With the kickoff of the summer season, most people have vacation on their minds or are finalizing their plans for the perfect summer getaway. The start of the summer for the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce is always an exciting time for many different reasons. A lot of events take place in Anderson County during the summer. A particular event is the Chamber s Tribute to Business Dinner. For seven years now, the Chamber of Commerce has been hosting the annual summer event as a way of Lake City Middle School and MAGNA took home the overall winner of DIDI East TN and the Innovate Award. Robertsville Middle School and SL Tennessee took home the Think Award. recognizing businesses in Anderson County and their dedication to the Chamber. This year the 7th Annual Tribute to Business Dinner will be held at the Kincaid House on Friday, June 29, 2018. The night will kick off with a social hour starting at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner and awards at 7:00 pm. The awards to be given during the event are as follows: Small Business Excellence Award, Mid-Sized Business Excellence Award, Large Business Excellence Award, Woman- Owned Excellence Award, and the newest addition Pick up your new mug at your favorite Git N Go Market and Deli 3 sizes to choose from 20, 32 and 64 ounce. Norris Middle School and Protomet were awarded the Amaze Award. Before that vision became a reality, Johnson knew that she wanted the location to be in Clinton. Clinton is the hometown of Charlotte Johnson and is also where her family resides. The museum s new location will be in the old Sears located in Main Street Oak Ridge. Designsensory has hired Adam Wigren as Producer, Chris McAdoo as Creative Director, and Courtney Hendricks as Art Director. The City of Clinton has been selected as one of the 12 cities in Tennessee for the Tennessee Downtown Revitalization Program. Tennessee Downtowns communities work through groups of local citizens who participate in a two-year program supported by the National Main Street Center. They also receive a $15,000 grant to complete a downtown improvement project. Melissa Charles, owner of The Kincaid House, and Jim Charles with Edward Jones Advisor have joined with the North Anderson County Boys and Girls Club to reward kids who qualify with a new bike or sporting equipment. 35 kids received bikes and seven received other sporting equipment. Larry Baylor, Staff Scientist at the Department of Energy s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has received the 2018 Fusion Technology Award from the IEEE s Nuclear and Plasma Science Society. Panos Datskos, Researcher at the Department of Energy s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elected fellow of SPIE for his work in sensor and nanomaterials research. Google stopped by NMS to visit technology teacher, Angela Whitley s classes. The multinational technological company shared some Google insiders with the students along with introducing their new augmented reality hardware and software. The students got to experience and evaluate Google s newest product! What an exciting day for the students of Norris Middle School! Clinton City Schools Summer Lunch Program Offered for Clinton Children C linton City Schools is offering the Free Summer Lunch Program to all children in the Clinton community this summer! This is part of a federally funded program to ensure that students eat healthy meals over the summer. Lunch will be served daily from 11:00-12:00 at North Clinton Elementary School. Children, ages 0-18, qualify to receive a free, hot meal every day!! This program is available to ALL children, regardless if you are a Clinton City student. There are no income requirements in order to participate. This is a program intended to benefit the entire community. The program will run from May 29-July 25, serving Monday through Friday. Lunch will not be served on July 4. Plan to bring your children to take advantage of this wonderful program! CCS Kicks off Read 20 Program T Anderson County Schools hosted a golf tournament at Centennial Golf Course on April 25, 2018. Funds from the tournament will go to support the Teacher Depot. his summer, CCS is kicking off a Read 20 Program to encourage our students to read at least 20 minutes per day. Reading 20 minutes a day can significantly increase students academic projection! It is that easy! We are providing an abundance of opportunities to support students in achieving this goal. Students will have access to 3 electronic libraries: MyOn, Big Universe, and READS. MyOn is sponsoring prizes for students who read on the MyOn platform over the summer! The top reader on MyOn at each school will win a HD Kindle Fire. Other prizes, including gift cards, will be awarded as well for top readers. In Veterinarian Science, Sydney Zemke was second high individual, Annalyse Leach was 10th high individual and Gabby Hutton was 14th high individual in Tennessee. On the Poultry Team, Treythan Beaty was fourth high individual, Desir ee Burkett was sixth high individual and Nicholas Monday was ninth high individual in Tennessee. The purpose of the Veterinary Science (Career Development Event) is to promote college and career readiness by providing students with opportunities to develop technical knowledge and demonstrate practical skills in the numerous fields of veterinary science including animal behavior, Disease (causes and sources, signs and clinical signs), Medical terminology, Medical records, Anatomy/physiology, Regulations (OSHA: Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration; GHS: Globally Harmonized System for Hazard Communication; SDS: Safety Data Sheets), Patient management, Facility management, Practice management, Genetics, Nutrition and Veterinary math applications. The FFA Poultry Evaluation Contest (Career Development Event) provides an opportunity for FFA members to display their agricultural knowledge and skills in the area of Poultry Science and Evaluation. FFA students applied industry-specific skills as they competed in the state Poultry Evaluation contest. Students were responsible in acting as an USDA inspector when assessing various poultry products. There were 100 FFA members participating from 25 chapters across from Tennessee in both contests. The contest was hosted by UT Martin. This is one of many Career Development Events that the Anderson County FFA participates in throughout the year, giving real-world application to career related skills learned in class. ACCTC Student Named Microsoft Champion for the State of Tennessee The Anderson County Career and Technical Center s Business Technology Department is thrilled to announce that student, Gage Higgens, has been named the Microsoft Champion for the state of Tennessee. Through the Microsoft Office Specialist Certification (MOS) Course in Advanced Digital Business with instructor Shannon Smith, students have the opportunity to leave high school with credentials recognized by professionals as an indicator of job readiness and performance. Higgens score was near perfect in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. Gage is invited to Atlanta, Georgia in June to compete in the Microsoft Nationals with a chance to earn scholarships, meet with Microsoft executives, and compete for a national title. GEAR UP to Continue for Anderson County Schools The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced that Anderson County Schools is the recipient of a $853,350.00 GEAR UP grant over the next six years. The grant funds will provide services to students and families with the aim of increasing enrollment and success in postsecondary education. The funding is part of the U.S. Department of Education s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant, which aims to increase the number of low-income students in Tennessee who are accessing and succeeding in higher education. Anderson County Schools (specifically Clinton High School, Clinton Middle School, and Norwood Middle School), is one of 15 communities selected to receive funds. The communities were selected through a competitive application process by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, the administrator of the state s GEAR UP TN grant. We are so excited and honored to be awarded the GEAR UP TN grant! In Anderson County it is our intent to continue to promote post-secondary access for all students. This funding will support, not supplant, career exposure and college readiness initiatives which lead to success in post-secondary education. Through improved academic performance, higher graduation rates and shared post-secondary knowledge and opportunities, it is our desire to both educate our school community and reduce the anxiety that is prevalent in so many students and their families surrounding education after high school, said Eric Snider, Director of Secondary Education for Anderson County Schools. As part of the project, Clinton High School and its feeder schools will form a local, community-based GEAR UP TN Collaborative to provide college access and success-focused services to students at Clinton High School, Clinton Middle School, and Norwood Middle School. Students in the Class of 2023, who are currently in the seventh grade, will receive services as a cohort through middle school, high school, and their first year of postsecondary education. Seniors at Clinton High School will also receive direct services that will help them prepare for college and apply to postsecondary programs. Services will include one-onone mentoring, tutoring, college visits, and financial aid counseling. GEAR UP TN will also provide students across the state of Tennessee with college and financial aid resources, including a college access and success website, CollegeforTN.org. Each GEAR UP TN Collaborative includes formal partnerships with at least one middle school, one high school, a higher education institution, a local board of education and at least two community-based organizations. Partners will help implement grant activities and ensure that the momentum of college access work continues beyond the six-year grant. Clinton High School s GEAR UP TN Collaborative will partner with Roane State Community College, Tennessee College of Applied Technology, Pellissippi State Community College, Clayton Homes, SL Tennessee, Aisin, Eagle Bend Manufacturing, Junior Achievement, Techmer, and Anderson County Chamber of Commerce. This is Tennessee s third GEAR UP grant. Tennessee s first GEAR UP TN project, which began in 2005, resulted in a 22.8 percent increase in college-going rates in the nine rural school 8 districts. Communities served by Tennessee s second GEAR UP TN grant, which began in 2012, have shown impressive results, including over 9 percentage points of growth in college-going rates since 2012. Tennessee was one of ten states awarded a GEAR UP grant as part of the 2017 competition.

In addition to basketball, CCS is now offering a swim team, cross country team, and dance team. The CCS Blaze Swim Team kicked off in April with Coach Zeke Rich. There are currently 19 swimmers on the team who practiced two times a week at the Clinton Community Center. They held an exhibition swim meet on Thursday, May 16 and did great! We have some true talent at CCS! The CCS Cross Country Team will officially begin its activities in the fall. Any 4th, 5th, or 6th grader that wants to attend is welcome! Interested students met at the football field for a practice one mile run last week. More information concerning this opportunity, as well as dance team specifics, will be sent home at the beginning of next year. F A Blaze Coaches Basketball Camp will be held for any interested rising 4th, 5th, and 6th grader on May 29, 30, and 31. There are still a few spaces available for interested students. Additional registration forms may be picked up at Central Office. Over the summer, the Blaze Sizzling Reading Society will meet on Friday, June 22. Each grade level has been assigned a book to read. At our first meeting in June, students will do fun activities associated with the book as well as enjoy a pizza party! All students who attend will receive a free Blaze Sizzling Reader Society t-shirt! All Blaze activities have been planned as a way to develop well-rounded students, building on current interests and talents. The more opportunities we provide students to develop growth mindset and self-confidence, the stronger our students will become academically! CES Hosts 2nd Annual U.S. History Wax Museum ifth grade students at Clinton Elementary School displayed the 2nd Annual U.S. History Wax Museum on May 17. Students chose a historical figure from Pre-Civil War to modern times that made a significant contribution to American History. Students conducted research on this person, and then wrote an essay and speech about their life. Fifth grade students spent two days peer-editing each other s work and making revisions. On the day of the wax museum, students dressed up as their historical figure and lined the halls of CES with their tri-fold poster board, pictures about that person, and props that were significant to the person s life. As people walked by, they pressed the button in front of the student and they came alive to say their speech. Fifth graders worked very hard on this project and were very excited to present it to other students, teachers, and the community. Page 8 The Anderson The Anderson County County Chamber Chamber of Commerce of Commerce / School News Anderson County Schools Retired Teachers Association Presents Two Scholarships The Anderson County Clinton City Retired Teachers Association presented scholarships to two graduating seniors at its May 8, meeting. The recipient from Anderson County High School is Brittney Johnson, daughter of Kenny Johnson and Jami Johnson. She plans to attend Pellissippi State Community College for the first two years and then transfer to the University of Tennessee. Brittney would like to become an elementary schoolteacher. The recipient from Clinton High School is Sarah M. Cardall, daughter of Christian and Kimberly Cardall. She plans to attend Maryville College to study neuroscience and ultimately become a college professor. Patsye Thurmon, president of the Anderson County Clinton City Retired Teachers Association, presented them their awards. Money for the scholarships was raised at the annual ACCCRTA auction in December. General Store, Knight s Florist, Perk-a-Deli s, Pitty-Pat Lane, Steve Pyatt Insurance, Samuel Franklin, Alex Stewart, Walmart, and Willow Ridge Nursery Middle School Students Attend Student Advisory Youth Summit Sixty middle school students (15 from each of Anderson County s four middle schools) got a chance to speak their minds about their education Monday. The students sixth, seventh, and eighth graders from Clinton, Lake City, Norris, and Norwood middle schools took part in the Student Advisory Youth Summit (SAYS), part of Anderson County Schools AWARE program. The topics up for discussion varied, ranging from how students want to be treated by teachers, school settings, and subjects being taught inside the classroom. Anderson County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tim Parrott sat in on the group discussions and even took part in a round table session of If you could ask the superintendent Questions ranged from school safety to testing. We don t want to be taught how to take tests, one student told Parrott. Teach us something that will help us throughout life. Parrott responded, I agree, but that is beyond our control. Testing is the State of Tennessee s directive, but I have been in touch with the Commissioner of Education relaying those concerns. Several students spoke of the need for more arts and music courses (and equipment) in the schools. Students were also asked to think of one question/suggestion they would pose to a teacher. Again, the questions and suggestions varied and ranged from Ask us how our day is, to Don t talk down to us, and Compliment us once in awhile. Conducted by STARS out of Nashville, facilitators at Monday s summit said students from Anderson County made many of the same suggestions and posed the same questions as students from across the state whether those students were from urban areas such as Memphis, or rural areas you didn t even know existed. Parrott said the school system would like to plan more SAYS days next fall a separate day for each of the county s four middle schools. Clinton City Schools SCES Partners with ORAU for STEAM Night South Clinton Elementary held their annual STEAM night on Thursday, March 8th. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) came to set up a variety of hands-on activities in the gym. Students were able to build their own boat and then try to see how long it could float. Then they placed pennies to add weight to see how many pennies their boat could hold before it sank. They also participated in an experiment that involved a two-part chemical reaction, where the reaction formed an expanding foam that they called foam gnomes. As part of this night, students participated in robot races as well as making their own SCES bookmarks with a 3D printer. Teachers had a variety of different activities in their classrooms for students to complete, and PTO served dinner to all who attended. Mrs. Lorrie Irwin, 1st grade teacher at SCES, planned this fun night of learning in conjunction with ORAU. It was a great night of hands on learning that forced students to think outside the box, observe, and experiment! Allstate and Millie s Wings Supports NCES Allstate agents and friends of Millie s Wings came together to complete a community service project at North Clinton Elementary School. A group of volunteers gathered on a hot, muggy Saturday morning to paint the exterior fence on Beets Street, giving the school an updated, fresh look. In return, Allstate Insurance will be donating $6,000 to Millie s Wings for the South Clinton All Inclusive Park. David Erb, from Erb s Allstate Agency in Clinton, organized the event. Other area Allstate representatives from Austin, Karen Teske, Roberts-Heidle, Hutchinson, and Keith Schnieder Agencies donated their time as well. Stephen and Christina McNally brought their two children to help complete the project. North Clinton Elementary staff, students, and community appreciate their time and efforts to help with such an important project.

Page 10 The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce LEADERSHIP Leadership Anderson County Kicks off for the Class of 2019 T he Leadership Anderson County Class of 2019 successfully kicked off their year long program on May 14, 2018. The two-day orientation began at the Clinton Highschool Sportsplex where class members participated in team building activities. After lunch, Executive Coach, Chuck Carringer spoke to the class about leadership and continuing to grow in the community. The second day of orientation was held at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Clinton. Leadership participants completed a DiSC Assessment and brainstormed community service project ideas. The birthday celebration was the Chamber s way of expressing it s gratitude towards Anderson County and all of the members of the Chamber. The Chamber would like to thank Hoskins in the Flat for the use of Gazebo park and for providing the table center pieces. Thank you to all who came out to help the Chamber celebrate!
