June 2018 News and Events of the North County Photographic Society...Inspired by Photography, Powered by Volunteers! Destination Presentations by NCPS Members Wednesday, June 27 @ 6:30p.m. At our June meeting, NCPS members will have the opportunity to hear from their own colleagues as five select photographers share some of their favorite locations for creating memorable photographic images. Iceland as easy as possible. Our first member destination speaker is Alan Haynes featuring his presentation, Experience Iceland. During the course of three trips over three different seasons, Alan and his wife, Michele, have traveled the entire country of Iceland. Alan s presentation will focus on photographing the unique beauty of this sparsely-populated country. He will also share travel tips to make a visit to Our next speaker, Andrew Szikla will take us to Patagonia with his presentation Iconic Destination for Landscape Photographers. Patagonia is a vast region in South America covering the southern most areas of Argentina and Chile. It is known for its temperamental weather, extreme climbing, trekking and, of course, great landscape photography opportunities. During his 20-minute presentation Andrew will share travel recommendations, some of the key destinations, and his photographs and experiences gathered during two trips to Patagonia s famous parks, Glaciares National Park and Torres del Paine. For those times when we just can t travel, Patrick Nuzum is going to share studio grade images that were taken using makeshift studio setups. The studio setups that Patrick makes are of repurposed items from around the house. He will show these setups and the images he created using them in his presentation [Re]purposed. (continued on page 2)

2 Our next speaker, Abbey Chamberlain says, Greece is the seat of Civilization and a beautiful place to experience. I would like to give you the reality tour and tell you what it s like there, and give tips on European travel. I will include some of the art I created after getting home. Currently in a show at The Front Porch Gallery until July 8th is my Impressionist Photograph titled, Mykonos. Lew Abulafia will end the night with Olympic National Park - A Cornucopia for Landscape Photographers. Olympic NP located in the northwest corner of Washington state has an incredible diversity of scenic beauty ranging from storm tossed coastline to mountain ranges with the only temperate rain forest in North America as the cherry on top. t 3 President s Corner Photography Clubs by Sandy Zelasko The past two months I ve been holed up in Minnesota. By holed up I don t mean in a cave but rather residing in our new 5th wheel on a 200-acre farm where my stepson s family calls home. My husband, our two Aussies and myself are quite comfortable, however, I m a bit antsy missing my camera club. So after a quick Internet search I was introduced to a plethora of clubs in and around the state. Now, I am no traitor to NCPS, but rather curious to see how other photo organizations run their meetings. So I made plans to join a photographer friend in the area and we attended the Crosstown Camera Club s May meeting in Edina. Then I was invited to do my program on Badlands National Park for the Mankato Digital Camera Club the following week. Both meetings were enjoyable and filled my yearning. I had a chance to meet fellow photographers, learn of local photo spots and see new activities that would be fun for and easy to introduce into an NCPS meeting. But nothing can replace the camaraderie, excellent photography, dedication and participation of the members of our exceptional club. My experience was an eye opener and I came away with a renewed appreciation for the NCPS members I call friends. I ll be glad to get home and back to the norm with new images from life on the road! Proudly representing (and loyal to) NCPS, Sandy How Sweet It Is San Diego County Fair 2018 The 2018 San Diego County Fair opened on Friday, June 1st, and will run through Wednesday, July 4th (closed Mondays and Tuesdays except 7/2 and 7/3). This year s Fair theme is, How Sweet It Is. A number of our members participated in the annual International Photographic Exposition and several won awards for their work. You can see a list of the participants and winners on the following pages. In addition, our club donated a special award to four deserving students in the Student Showcase and Creative Youth competitions. Please take the opportunity to visit these photo displays.

Twenty-four NCPS members had a great showing with 97 images. Here s our list. *HM = Honorable Mention We sincerely hope no one was left off this list! In the meantime, you can see the winners of our donated awards to Student Showcase and Creative Youth in this edition of The Lens Paper.

6 Meet the Judges! STUDENT SHOWCASE Dedicated to helping the 2018 fair directors and encouraging young photographers who are learning the craft, this year s group of NCPS judges worked with other Student Showcase volunteers to evaluate the work and assign appropriate awards including Best in Class and Best of Show. Many of our member volunteers returned as veterans having judged often in years past. Shown holding a scoring card are, STANDING: Brenda Stalder, Ed Stalder, John Foltz, Mike McMahon, Garrie Lynn Rhodes, Francine Pender, Hugh Cox, Diane Peck, Stan John, Steve Schlesinger, Rick Gauthreaux, and Joyce Mate. CREATIVE YOUTH A smaller group of dedicated NCPS judges trekked their way over to the Creative Youth display at racetrack center where they selected the work of two young students for the NCPS Creative Youth Awards. They repeated this again at the Student Showcase display, awarding the work of two deserving students. Pictured are Sing Baker, Joyce Mate, and Nancy Jennings.

7 2018 Annual NCPS Photography Exhibition By Andrew Szikla Hard to believe that almost one year has gone by but yes, it is time It is time to start thinking about the 2018 Annual NCPS Photography Exhibition! This will be our 23rd annual show and, once again, our images will hang at the Encinitas Library s Community Room. We are fine-tuning the prospectus for this year s show and will publish it in next month s (July) Lens Paper. However, it is never too early to be aware of some key dates. The show will run from Wednesday, September 19th through Saturday, October 27th, 2018 and, same as prior years, the deadline for registration of entries is September 1st, 2018 (no exceptions). Also, like past shows, due to space restrictions, we will need to limit the number of entries to a total of 90 on a first come, first served basis. If you are planning on participating I strongly encourage you to enroll early and not delay. The show, of course, is free of charge and open to ALL members of the club, but your dues must be current through September 1st, 2018 in order to be eligible to enter up to 2 images. All eligible entries will be at the show and judged for award ribbons by one or two industry professionals. This year the artist reception is scheduled for Saturday, September 22nd from 1:00 to 4:00 pm with food and music. It will be great fun and an excellent opportunity to meet and mingle with fellow photographers, friends and family that share your passion for the art of photography. You will not want to miss this event! Finally, as you can imagine, preparing and running the show requires active participation from the membership and we will again need a number of volunteers for take-in, hanging, the artist reception and other required tasks. Volunteering a few hours of your time will be greatly appreciated and help make this 23rd annual show a success we can all be proud of. If you are interested in helping out please contact me, Andrew Szikla, the 2018 show coordinator at membershow@nc-photo.org Remember to look for more details and the prospectus in next month s newsletter.
