His first assignment will be at the Naval Station Newport, RI for Navy Supply Corps School. Ensign Dickinson is from Garden City, NY. Midshipman Christian Yoo Midshipman Yoo graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. He will commission at a later date and will receive his first assignment at that time. Midshipman Yoo is from Bronxville, NY. UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS Dr. Drew Gilpin Faust Second Lieutenant Brian Furey Lieutenant Furey graduates with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. His first assignment is the Basic School in Quantico, VA. Lieutenant Furey is from Portland, ME. Second Lieutenant Gavin Pascarella Second Lieutenant Pascarella grades with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government, with a focus on International Relations. His first assignment is the Basic School in Quantico, VA. Lieutenant Pascarella is from Corona, CA. Dr. Drew Gilpin Faust took office as Harvard University s 28th president on July 1, 2007. A historian of the U.S. Civil War and the American South, Dr. Faust is also the Lincoln Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She previously served as founding dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (2001-2007). Before coming to Radcliffe, Dr. Faust was the Annenberg Professor of History and director of the Women s Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of six books, including, most recently, This Republic of Suffering: Death and the American Civil War, published in January 2008. Dr. Faust s honors include awards in 1982 and 1996 for distinguished teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1994 and the American Philosophical Society in 2004. She received her bachelor s degree from Bryn Mawr in 1968, magna cum laude with honors in history, and master s (1971) and doctoral (1975) degrees in American civilization from the University of Pennsylvania.

50 th Reunion Guest Speaker Lieutenant Colonel David R. Downer, USAF (Retired) David Downer graduated with the Harvard College Class of 1963. He is currently a Financial Advisor with Ameriprise Financial, owning a franchise in Sarasota, FL. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Architectural Sciences, he entered active duty in September 1963 and was assigned to the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he studied architecture from 1963 to 1965. He was then assigned to duties in the Civil Engineering career field at bases in Ohio and Alaska, and then was tapped for duty as a Minuteman Missile Combat Crew Commander for the next four years at Minot AFB, ND. He returned to civil engineering duties in 1973, serving in Thailand and Langley AFB, VA where he was instrumental in activating the first operational wing of F-15 fighter aircraft. In 1978 he was assigned for duty in Tehran, Iran, and was evacuated following the revolution in early 1979. A staff assignment followed at Strategic Air Command Headquarters at Offutt AFB, Omaha, NE, after which he assumed command of the 601st Civil Engineering Squadron, Sembach AB, Germany. Returning in 1984, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Engineering & Services, Headquarters, 15 th Air Force, March AFB, CA. He retired from active military service in 1986. Following retirement, and prior to entering the financial field, he was in civilian facilities management. Positions included Post Engineer at Valley Forge Military Academy, Director of Physical Plant at Swarthmore College, Director of Facilities Operations for the Vanguard Group and Project Manager for Johnson Controls Facilities Management Division. Colonel Downer is also involved in community activities in his home town of Sarasota, FL. He is a deacon in his church, a director on the board of the Harvard Club of Sarasota, vice president of the Ivy League Club of Sarasota and is active in the Air Force Association s local chapter. The Oath of Office I, having been appointed an officer in the United States Military, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of The United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter. So help me God. The First Salute It is customary when new officers receive their first salute to award a silver dollar to the individual rendering the salute. The individual receiving the silver dollar is then responsible for following the officer s career. If the officer reaches the rank of General or Admiral, the silver dollar is awarded back to the newly promoted flag officer.
