dnmtwtmtt Satttj Campus Servng Storrs Snce 1896 VOL. LCD. NO. 37 STORRS. CONNECTCUT FRDAY, NOVEMBER 11. 1966 Unusual Referenda Turnout nfluences J.S.O. Sweep by Edward Abrahams Wednesday's sweepng SO vctory n the Class Councl e- lectons was strongly nfluenced by the unusually large turnout generated by the referenda. A record total of approxmately 4,200 votes were cast wth the Freshman class pacng the turnout wth 1,378 votes, some 100 more than last year. Sophomores cast slghtly over 1,200 votes, the Junors Just over 1,000, and the senors cast 600 votes. Turnout was hghest n the Towers wth 524 votes recorded whle 353 votes were talled n the fraterntes. t appears that the large turnout n the Towers worked to the advantage of upperclass SO canddates. For example, sophomore Presdent Glenn Goldberg captured a majorty of 103-34 over Bll Brusteln n the Towers, whch easly overcame a 75-62 defct n the fraterntes. Ths strength extended to other offces and was notlcable also n Arnle Albero's losng bd for Senor Vce-Presldent. However, the effort exerted on the campagn tral contnues to play a vtal role n determnng the electon outcome. Key to the BO sweep n the Freshman class, where party lnes are not yet frmly drawn, was a wellorganzed campagn effort scheduled by Sam Zeldner. t was notable that straght tcket votng n the Freshman Class was consderable, though an excepton was noted n the race for treasurer. BO canddate Becky Hll scored well n North Campus, whle USA nomnee Mke Moore was most successful at Shlppee. n the school wde ballotng for Freshman Senators, BO canddate Peter Duffy captured the lead n all.classes. Among the other three hopefuls, however, trends dffered n the fourt classes. BO vctor, Hans Wlnberg, who polled only 569 Frosh votes to place thrd n that class, ran second n the upper classes to overcome George Spadoro. Spadoro, garnerng 640 Frosh votes, then fell behnd hs runnng mate Dave nterlande, allowng Wlnberg to "slp through" to vctory. The most spectacular tactcs of the campagn appeared n the clase race for Sophomore Secretary. "Who s Sue Morrs?" emblazoned on posters and regularly repeated n the CDC appears to have been effectve n rallyng support, so much so that USA, n a belated dodge, opned that "the Robnson rebellon wants you!". Both canddates receved strong backng from ther houses, n a campagn n whch publcty was the chef factor n determnng the outcome. Junor class ballotng featured the sharpest contrast n ssues and n the approach taken by the canddates to the voters. ncumbent Matt Stackpole ssued a mnmum of publcty and heavly emphaszed Unversty reform and support of the Consttuton as ssues. USA standard bearer Scott Cowen waged a hard, emotonal campagn amed mostly at "gettng more done for the class" and chargng neffectve leadershp. Stackpole's sweep was general throughout the campus, wth only the Sgma Ph Epslon box, by one vote, gong for Cowen. Stackpole's vote margn of 687-260, a majorty of 427 votes, exceeded hs 547-261 vote trumph over Scott Fraser last year. Stackpole, however, could not carry hs runnng mates. Prevous exposure aded USA Treasurer-elect Sharon O'Donohue, whle Secretary - elect Jane Vogler, wnner by 21 votes n the closest contest of the campagn, receved notable support from "certan tradtonally BO voters" who appear to have tlted the balance. Senor campagnng was tepd wth the Presdency uncontested. BO strength n ths class showed up prncpally n the Towers. By regsterng asweep the USA completed a perfect 16-0 record n class offce contests n the four year lfe of the Class of 1967. Often overshadowng the campagn (especally one n whch the tradtonal pcture posters See page sx Frday Flm Seres To Begn Tonght "Hallelujah the Hlls" wll be presented at 9 p.m. tonght n Von Der Mehden Hall as the frst n a seres of fve flms sponsored by the Contnung Educaton Servces and the School of Fne Arts. Although frghtenng or at least annoyng to parents, "Why's" often provde a basc part of educaton. Today we have some "Why's" of our own. We do not pretend that they are the most mportant questons that could be asked, some of them are not even world-shakng. Not all of them have smple answers, some of them are mere matters of curosty. But enough explanaton, here goes: Why won't anyone release the contents of the letter from the state commssoner of Health that rates the restaurants that we UConn students frequent? Why was the ASG referendum defeated? (We are gong to cheat here and suggest that the llegal use of campagn materals, e.g. "VOTE NO" buttons wthn 50' of the ballot boxes was one consderaton.) Why dd the Board of Governors recently ncrease ther votng executve board by two new postons - both members of the Admnstraton? Why dd the state pay for a new road at the new parkng row opposte the Schools of Busness, Educaton, and Pharmacy last sprng, snce they are now n the process of rppng t up to put n the water ppes they forgot? Why s the lbrary dome now covered wth ycky yellow rustoleum, s t really that mportant to get rd of a glt-complex? When ths campus was desgned (assumng t was) why ddn't the archtect realze, as students do, that the shortest dstance between two ponts s a straght lne - maybe then there would not be so many unused sdewalks and abused lawns? Why dd the speech department sponsor a sophomore presdental canddate's campagn as ther class project? Why dd Bll Byxbee get more votes on the.s.o. tcket than on the U.S.A. tcket? Why are the ducks segregated the brown on Swan Lake and the whte on Mrror Lake? Why do good guys sometmes come n last? Why was everyone so pleased wth a "record-breakng vote" of 40 percent of the student body? Why s t not socally acceptable to be nterested n one's courses and an undenable rule that classes are confned to the classroom? Why s an organzaton lke C.U.R. taken so lghtly by the majorty of the student body? Why do some UConn students cry out for a crtcal newspaper, unless tcrtdzes them? Ths s a typcal example of the type of apathy present at UConn we have thousands of talkers and no doers. Well, apathetes, someone has fnally decded to do somethng. The area n the vcnty of Shtppee Hall on Route 195 s one of these places. The ruts on North Eaglevllle Road are masterpeces, the creaton of an obvously brllant, f slghtly perverted mnd.. Every nght, students (and everyone else drvng on ths road) get to play Dodge the Dtch. The object of the game s to try to avod the cleverly placed ruts n the road so as not to tota!ly run your shock absorbers, throw your wheels completely out of algnment, or, n the case of sports cars, scrape your bumper. The only trouble wth ths game s that t's too one-sded. The drver never wns. Every nght the ruts are n a dfferent spot. Some nghts one rut s flled n, some nghts a- nother. Never the same rut two nghts n a row. And, of course, there are no lghts to warn the drver. That wouldn't be far. But why complan? Everyone knows college students have p. ty of money to spend fxng ther cars after Unversty neglect runs them. But please, please don't nterpret ths letter as meanng we advocate an abolshment of the constructon work gong on at UConn. Wthout the traler trucks and Olympan ples of drt to gude them and serve as landmarks on the campus, everyone would get lost tryng to fnd ther class. The Husky-Ram rvalry s the oldest contnung seres on the Huskes' slate, havng started n 1897 and beng played 55 tmes snce that tme. Wth fve wns n a row from 1958 through 1962, the Nutmeggers own a 26-23 edge, there beng sx tes. The Redmen, 4-0 n league play, have a one-game lead over Vermont, 3-1, whch wll be at Mane, 1-3. However, CoachVlcFuslaand hs Redmnn are wary of the UNH Blue Wldcats. New Head Coach Joe Yuklca has a revtalzed, sophomore team that has shown contnual mprovement. After a last-mnute loss to Colby, 18-14, and a defeat by Rhode sland, 17-6, UNH rebounded wth a fnal-second 10-7 wn over Mane. Vermont took a seemngly safe B4-0 halftme lead before the Wldcats stormed back to Just fall short, 32-24. Last mnute losses to Northeastern and Connectcut by dentcal 15-14 scores faled to dampen UNH sprts. They came back last week and knocked off bowl-asplrlng Sprngfeld, 28-21, despte four regulars beng njured ncludng startng halfbacks Bll Phllps and Tom Kasprzak. Phllps s out for the year, but Kasprzak s ready to play ths week. Phllps' replacement, soph Paul Coutourler, ganed 118 yards rushng n 20 tres, and scored two touchdowns, ncludng a 71-yard burst aganst Sprngfeld. Key man n the UNH attack s dangerous quarterback Bll Estey. The 5'6" 140-lb. dynamo s a threat as a runner, passer, recever, and kck return artst. He has scored eght TD's and has run back kcks for 84, 90, and 98 yard touchdowns. The Blue Wldcat has become a snarlng, aggressve, and dangerous felne and s amng to deral Massachusetts. The Redmen, stll smartng from the 16-14 defeat at Holy Cross, want the Beanpot, symbolc of Yankee Conference football supremacy, to return to Amherst. No serous njures came out of Holy Cross, although stellar cornerback Mke McArdle mssed the second half wth a brused hp and soph defensve end Randy Robnson was hobbled by njures. Both are expected to be ready, however. The best news was the return of senor offensve tackle Bll Connor and lnebacker Bob Goglck, who saw spot acton. The Redmen scrpt ths fall calls for clff-hangers and suspense thrllers. New Hampshre has engaged n fve such games also. Second-place Vermont plays at Mane, and a combnaton of Connectcut and Mane successes could boost the Huskes nto a te for the runner-up poston. Frstplace Massachusetts (4-0) plays New Hampshre (1-3) at home. Vermont's record s 3-1, Connectcut 2-2, Rhody, Mane and New Hampshre 1-3 n Yankee acton.
