TITLE: RBA/NPA Summer Student Placement Scheme INSTITUTION: Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), and its subsidiary Note Printing Australia (NPA), 1-9 Potter St, Craigieburn VIC 3064 SUPERVISOR: Dr Phillip Fox RESEARCH FOCUS The use of physics, chemistry and materials science to create new security features for banknotes, and the development of methods and systems to ensure the functionality of banknotes in circulation. RESEARCH BACKGROUND The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA, www.rba.gov.au) is responsible for the issue of new banknotes and the removal of worn and unfit banknotes from circulation. Australia s banknotes are manufactured by the RBA s subsidiary, Note Printing Australia (NPA, www.noteprinting.com) at a high security facility in Craigieburn, Victoria. NPA's design and prepress facility is used for producing new security feature designs with an entirely digital workflow, and working with high resolution computer to plate (CtOP and CTiP) and colour management systems, to achieve printed products used by the RBA. Polymer banknotes are banknotes made from a polymer such as biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), a non-fibrous and non-porous polymer. Such notes incorporate many security features not available to paper banknotes, including the use of metameric inks; they also last significantly longer than paper banknotes, resulting in a decrease in environmental impact and a reduction of production and replacement costs. The BOPP substrate is processed through the following steps: Opacifying two layers of ink (usually white) are applied to each side of the note, except for an area(s) deliberately left clear; Sheeting the substrate is cut into sheets suitable for the printing press; Printing traditional offset, intaglio and letterpress printing processes are used; and Overcoating notes are coated with a protective varnish. RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL The exact nature of the work may be subject to change due to operational requirements at the time, but essentially the project will involve the application of analytical measurement techniques to assess how banknotes will perform in circulation. NUMBER OF STUDENTS: One 1
