This course is designed to prepare the student to take the IBLCE exam to become a certified IBCLC Lactation Consultant and prepare the student for a career as a certified lactation consultant. In addition to the certificate for 90 hours a Breastfeeding Specialist Certificate (TM) is awarded at the completion of this course valid for a five year certification. The IBLCE requires 6 general education classes in addition to the comprehensive 90 hour lactation specific training program for Pathway 3 applicants. When applying for the IBLCE exam, candidates for Pathway 3 must demonstrate completion of continuing education in the following topics: Documentation for the Lactation Consultant Medical Terminology Occupational Safety and Security Professional Ethics for Health Professionals Universal Safety Precautions and Infection Control Basic Life Support (obtain from your local hospital, fire department or Red Cross) We offer courses to satisfy 5 of these requirements. 2 are included in the Lactation Consultant Training Program and the other 3 are offered as a package as outlined below. COURSE CODE - GED101: IBLCE Additional General Education Package (for students currently enrolled in the Lactation Consultant Training Program): This package includes those classes not already in your Lactation Consultant Training Program (Medical Terminology, Occupational Safety and Security and Universal Precautions). 4 Nursing Contact Hours and 6 CEU's - $65.00 Medical Terminology: This course covers the derivations of medical terms from Greek and Latin roots including prefixes and suffixes and common abbreviations. Terms focus on childbirth and lactation. Lesson includes flash cards (viewable on portable devices). 4 Nursing Contact Hours Occupational Safety and Infant Security: This course covers prevention of musculoskeletal injuries, latex allergies, lateral violence and hostile work environments, workplace stress and hospital infant security. 1 CEU Universal Precautions and Infection Control: This course discusses the modes of transmission of infection including the chain of infection and describes practices employed to interrupt the transmission of infection. Includes a post-test and bibliography 1 CEU
The IBLCE also requires completion of (8) of the following college level courses from the students choice of our affiliate Global Health Education through Northwestern State University of Louisiana (NSULA) provided completely on-line OR any other online college, local community college or university; as they are considered mandatory for the student to meet all of the requirements of Pathway 3 of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) to qualify to sit for the annual national board exam to become a practicing Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). 1. Sociology or Cultural Sensitivity or Cultural Anthropology MyCAA is not able to cover the costs of additional courses provided by a separate school or organization that does not directly earn a Certificate, License or Associate Degree; therefore the aforementioned college courses will have to be funded by the student if they are not obtained through a college program that leads to an Associate Degree, License or Certificate.
