/trihamletnews @trihamletnews trihamletnews trihamletnews.com Romaine and Panico honored as Heroes of the Bay by Moriches Bay Project Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico were recently honored by the Moriches Bay Project (MBP) for their outstanding support of the environmental and educational nonprofit organizations. MBP works to improve the water quality in Moriches Bay through oyster farming and eel grass plantings and has partnered with several municipalities, including Brookhaven Town, in their endeavors. Specifically, the Town has supplied MBP with thousands of oysters which have been placed in Moriches Bay in waters located at Moriches Yacht Club in Center Moriches and in the Forge River. Because of their commitment to MBP and its mission to plant one million mollusks in the bay, Supervisor Romaine and Councilman Panico were named official Heroes of the Bay. MBP also recognized Tom Carrano of the Town s Division of Environmental Protection for his role in facilitating and coordinating delivery and placement of oysters to various locations. Supervisor Romaine said, The preservation and protection of our bays is critical to the environment and economy of Brookhaven Town. I am thankful to Laura Fabrizio and her Moriches Bay Project colleagues for this honor and I commend the great work that they do so we all can enjoy our beautiful waterways. As an environmentalist, I have always supported initiatives to preserve land and provide for cleaner ground and surface waters, noted Councilman Panico. I also choose to support individuals and groups who share my concern for future generations. That is why I strongly support the reseeding of our bays with oysters and am proud of the work done by members of the Moriches Bay Project. 20 th Annual William Floyd Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament Event scheduled for August 22 The 20th annual William Floyd Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, August 22 at the Bellport Golf Club in Bellport, an event that has provided more than $455,000 in scholarships for deserving William Floyd High School seniors since its inception. The event, sponsored by Century 21 Cor-Ace Realty and Ace Builders, Inc., features 18 holes of golf bordering the picturesque Great South Bay followed by a dinner reception with prizes and raffles. Golf registration includes breakfast and lunch. For those who do not play golf, tickets are also available for the dinner only. William Floyd lacrosse coaches earn top honors The Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches Association has selected William Floyd boys varsity lacrosse coach Desmond Megna and junior varsity lacrosse coach Jonathan Germer as their Coaches of the Year as voted upon by fellow Suffolk County lacrosse coaches. Under the leadership of Coach Megna, the varsity Colonials overcame a 1-5 start to finish with an 8-8 overall record (7-7 League), earning themselves the Crosse Award for the Most Improved Team in Suffolk County. They also fielded two All-County players in Matt Murphy and Trevor Church; and John Bilotti took home the Eric Sopracasa Scholarship Award given to the player who through determination and character serves as a role model and inspiration to his fellow athletes. Suffolk County lacrosse is easily the best in the country, so it is quite an honor to be recognized by my peers, said Coach Megna, who teaches fifth grade at Moriches Elementary School and is a 1993 graduate of William Floyd High School. Additionally, the junior varsity team, led by Coach Germer, had their best season ever finishing with an 11-5 overall record (10-4 League). Being named coach of the year is amazing, said Coach Germer, who teaches fourth grade at Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School and is a 2009 graduate of William Floyd High School. This award is a true testament of how great this district is. My time here as a student and now as a teacher, I have been afforded incredible coaches, teachers and mentors. It is now my responsibility to pay it forward. Richard Tuscani celebrates 100 Years Richard Tuscani, a Mastic Beach resident for over 40 years, celebrated his 100th birthday at the Mastic Beach American Legion on Saturday, June 18, 2016. Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley) joined family, friends and other elected officials to celebrate Richard s milestone and to reflect on his accomplished life. Richard Tuscani was born on June 13th, 1916, and is known to be the oldest living WWII Veteran in Suffolk County. Richard is formerly from Corona, Queens, and has resided on Locus Drive in Mastic Beach for the over forty years. Prior to his career, Richard Tuscani was a highly decorated WWII Veteran having served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He received three Bronze Stars, one for battle in Leyte, Philippines, one for surviving a Kamikaze attach in New Guinea, and one for the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation Badge and the Meritorious Service Award. Richard worked as a Mail Carrier, an oil truck driver in a business he founded, a New York City Building Inspector, a City School Bus Driver, a local Dockmaster and until only a few years ago a School Bus Matron. Richard Tuscani is a history and geography buff and spends his days reading, studying history, and watching Yankee games. Richard is a hero and gentleman, who has been a huge part of the Mastic Beach community, stated Legislator Kate Browning. He bravely served his Country, and he held many jobs in public service when he returned from the war. He continues to remain an active member of the neighborhood, and is an inspiration to everyone. I wish him many more years of happiness. New William Floyd Board of Education Trustee sworn-in Newly-elected Trustee April Coppola recently took the oath of office to serve a three-year term on the William Floyd Board of Education. Ms. Coppola is a lifelong community resident and a graduate of the William Floyd School District with two school-aged children. She is an active community member and volunteer who has served in various roles with the William Floyd Elementary School PTO, the William Floyd Community Summit, the Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics and Shirley, as well as the William Floyd State Aid Advocacy group. She was administered the oath by District Clerk Jennifer Schildkraut and congratulated by Superintendent of Schools, Kevin M. Coster. I look forward to working with Ms. Coppola in her new role as trustee, said Mr. Coster. She is a wonderful asset to the district and community. Summer Sundays at Brookhaven Lab begin July 10 This summer, Brookhaven Lab invites you to have a new Summer Sundays experience! Explore world-class facilities, meet scientists, experience hands-on discovery, and enjoy a different science show each week. Summer Sundays visits are free, handicapped accessible, with no reservations needed. The Lab s cafeteria in Berkner Hall will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The main gate will also be open to incoming Summer Sunday visitors from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All activities are on a first-come, first-served basis. Free William Floyd summer food program begins on July 11 The William Floyd School District has once again partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to serve free breakfast and lunch to children aged 18 or under and their guests starting Monday, July 11 and offered weekdays through Friday, August 26. Breakfast will be served from 7 am to 9:30 am; and lunch between 11 am and 1:30 pm in the William Floyd High School cafeteria, 240 Mastic Beach Road, Mastic Beach. Please use the south entrance. There is no cost to local residents and the program is completely self-sustaining. There are no income requirements to participate and children do not have to reside within the William Floyd School District.
