VISION Building capacity for service delivery Part of the International Government Innovators Network with sister programmes in USA, Brazil, Mexico, China, Chile, the Philippines, Kenya, Peru and South Africa MISSION Impumelelo identifies and rewards innovations that improve the quality of life of the poor. Its objective is to promote good governance and service delivery through an annual awards programme. The award-winning projects become the basis for case study research in order to understand the methodologies required to implement policy successfully. MISSION Impumelelo, furthermore, facilitates sector-based best practice workshops, to train and expose public officials, civil society and community-based leaders to award-winning projects, which they, in turn, can replicate in their communities. The dissemination and replication of best practice are central to Impumelelo s core business.

Innovativeness - has innovative, creative and new procedures been developed? AWARD CRITERIA Effectiveness - the extent to which the project has achieved its stated objectives Poverty Impact - the demonstrable effect of the project in improving quality of life Sustainability - the viability and sound functioning of the project Replication - the value of teaching others new ideas and good practices A four phase process: Impumelelo sends out more than 3000 applications to public officials, NGOs and other organisations. THE IMPUMELELO CYCLE Short-lists the top 100 projects. Team of between 30-40 evaluators are sent to all corners of South Africa. (Over 1500 evaluations - the basis for our case study research) 40 are short-listed based on the recommendations of evaluators. 40 are invited to a Panel of Judges. Award winners receive a monetary prize which must be used to: TOWARDS REPLICATION Help share and encourage adaptation. Disseminate the success story.
