Page 3 of 5 From DAAD schoarship to job offer in Germany How bioogist Sam Hardman's passion for bird song anded him a job offer at a Max Panck Institute 29-year-od bioogist Sam Hardman from Leicester studied the infuence of urbanisation on birdsong in the city for his PhD. After graduating with a BSc from the University of Derby, he competed an MSc at the University of Durham before signing up to do a PhD at Aberystwyth University in Waes. Birds are abe to adjust the voume of their song to voume eves in the oca environment. The ouder it is in a city, the ouder the birds wi twitter, is one of the findings of his research work. In 2015 he had successfuy appied for a DAAD Research Grant for Doctora Candidates, which aowed him to spend a year conducting research at the Max Panck Institute (MPI) for Ornithoogy in the sma southern German town of Seewiesen. He used specia measuring instruments to study how canaries in the institute s cages responded to changes in ambient noise eves. The MPI for Ornithoogy is the best possibe pace for pursuing research in my fied, Sam enthuses. There is hardy another aboratory in the word that can match the MPI s eve of equipment. Sam was part of a fairy sma team with just three other researchers. Everyone heps each other and the research atmosphere is reay great, says Sam. And the MPI in Seewiesen aso vaues the work done by the bioogist: once he has competed his PhD, he wi have a job there as a researcher. I am very much ooking forward to returning to the MPI for Ornithoogy. Athough the subject of my research is much the same, I wi be conducting different experiments.
