Carker-c&nsel.ng panels establsh plan to mprove ther effectveness A plan to mprove the effectveness of career-counselng panels at NCAA member nsttutons was formulated by representatves of those panels last month at a meetng n Chcago. Ths was the frst meetng of panel representatves, whose prmary responsblty s to assst student-athletes durmg the transton from collegate to professonal athletcs careers. Panel members hope to enhance ther efforts through an nternal educaton process, whch ncludes acquantng coaches, athletcs personnel and student-athletes wth the actual problems wth agents and the choces that are avalable to the studentathletes regardng. professonal careers. Panel members requested that a network be establshed to exchange nformaton among panels, wth the natonal offce servng as ntermedary Through such an exchange, the actvtes and polces of partcular panels could be made avalable to others on a regular bass to prevent each panel from, as one speaker at the Chcago meetng put t, renventng the wheel. Panel members agreed that coaches wll play a vtal role n the success of ther nsttutons panels. It was stated that nsttutons need the assstance of ther coaches and admnstrators n ntroducng panel members and dentfyng ther servces to student-athletes. Representatves at the Chcago meetng generally agreed that as add& tonal panels are establshed, semannual meetngs should bc held. Another meetng has been planned tentatvely for the sprng of 1986. It s estmated that about 45 to 50 counselng panels are n place at member nsttutons, although there were only 27 panels represented at Chcago. Ryan, char of the Commsson, and John R. Davs, NCAA presdent. The Commsson and the Councl agreed to establsh an ndexng formula, usng hgh school grade-pont average and natonal test score, for a three-year phase-m perod, wth the current requrements of the bylaw becomng effectve n the thrd year. The elgblty-ndex amendment, f adopted, would apply for the frst two years (.e., the enterng classes of 1986 and 1987). and the bylaw requrements adopted n 1983 then would become applcable n the thrd year (.e., the enterng class of 1988). In the frst year (1986-87), the student-athlete could acheve ntal elgblty by usng an ndex whereby a 740 on the SAT test or I7 on the ACT test could be combned wth a mnmum I.800 grade-pont average n the core currculum, and a 2.200 grade pont n the core could be combned wth a mnmum 660 SAT or I3 ACT In the second year (1987-X8), the ndex would be reduced to the pont where a 720 SAT or I6 ACT could offset a 1.900 GPA, and a 2.100 GPA could offset a 680 SAT or I4 ACT. In 1988-89, the orgnal language of the rule would become the mnmum requrement: a 2.000 or better n the core, and at least a 700 on the SAT or I5 on the ACT. 2 November 4,1985 1 I Th; NCAA Comment Cold realty tells us to forget reform n athletcs By Blacke Sherrod The Dallas Mornng News It just could happen, f recrutng hassles mantan domno acton and us bleedng hearts contnue our ptem ous mewlng. that we wll wtness the Collegate Reformaton. A bare possblty. Somehow, I feel we ll cure the common cold frst and see old Bossy jump over the moon. Such a drastc revolt would requre several steps. The NCAA dscplnary commttee would have to grow even longer fangs and use them more. The number of punshed schools would have to ncrease notceably. There would need 10 be unversal anger, followed by wdespread revulson and then probably a natonal blght of apathy toward bg-tme college football. If all these factors were extreme enough that they affected college coffers and the surroundng busness communty, then, and only then, would a Collegate Reformaton hecome a remote possblty. We reformsts talk about a return to grassroots, of course, wheren ath- letcs would he only a part of campus feld, and they are begnnng to str Davs. ncluded suspect recrutng. lfe, a cutdown basc model wth no and make ther presence known. College presdents can be strong nfluences on the course of athletcs, but they an t the ones who would call ths shot. In truth, the presdents seem just now aware of problems m ths sweaty craft unless he got word from Robert Stewart and d Cox and Bll Clements and perhaps others who lend heavy fnancal ad and nfluence to SMU. These are busnessmen, not dealsts. You get ther attenton wth bottom lnes, not some romantc noton that the fullback should wear corduroys and a pullover sweater wth a block letter and pedal hs way to class on a battered bcycle wth books n the basket. Ths was good enough for Red Grange, but not for Kenneth And then, for any Collegate Reformaton to occur, all these Bg Daddes would have to be n accord. Dern ngh mpossble. You wouldn t even be able to get the Southwest Conference Bg Daddes 10 agree. There are all sorts of grudges and ll feelngs wthn the conference rght now. Start wth the coaches. Bobby Collns (head football coach at South- ern Methodst), when he came here, sensed some cold shoulders around the league. Some SWC coaches felt Collns and staff had come from an ndependent school at Southern Mss, where they could play rather fast and loose wth recrutng rules because they were under no conference montorng. They felt he was assumng a program left by Ron Meyer, whch own backyard. Jacke Sherrll, wth hs hghpowered operaton movng nto Texas A&M, generated a certan amount of frcton. Don t thnk there wasn t slent ggglng when SMU was upset by Arzona. And at the early season flops by the Agges durng Sherrll s early years. And the sudden exposure of payoffs at TCU. You won t be able to get these conference schools n bed together for a generaton or so, f ever. And a Collegate Reformaton would demand a hundred tmes that. We can dream about t, but cold hard reahty says forget t. Ideal way to clean up college athletcs s self-enforcement Fred Jacoby, commqsoner Southwest Athletc Conference Houton Chroncle Once youle been through the puntve actons, you have the opportunty to take measures to correct whal has happened. If we do that, we can come out stronger than before.... What we want to do s develop a straght lne between the coach and the player. The problem s when you have a booster enter the pcture, t becomes a trangle. We re tryng to cut the cord. Obvously, we haven t done a very good job of t... You can only speculate, What s ther motve? If you have a chld who does somethng wrong, he may say, Well, Jmmy s dong t. Why can t I?? When one nsttuton s caught n a volaton, they sometmes want to justfy t on the grounds that others are dong t. I don t thnk that s rght. If ths offce really hanted to go on a wtch hunt, we could go out and fnd a dsgruntled employee. We could talk to a transfer wth somethng to say about hs former school. We could go to any recrut and talk, not about the school he selected, but what happened wth the schools he ddn t select. The deal way s selfenforcement. John McKechne, assstant football coach Amherst College The Assoctated Press The game on TV doesnt reflect the whole atmosphere around a Lttle Three champonshp game (referrng to a Opnons Out Loud decson 10 turn dow.n a natonal cable televson bd to broadcast the 100th meetng between Amherst and Wllams College). I don t thnk t could pck up the mood of the people. There s no need to put the game n front of 34 mllon people. To be honest wth you, nether school needs the money from TV. The Wllams game s specal. We could be l-7 and beat Wllams and that s a successful season. There s no need for anythng comng from the outsde 10 help or hnder that. The ndvdual NCAA champonshps are mportant, and we need to contnue wth ths. We also need to fnd some way to ncorporate a team ttle n the form of a dual-meet champonshp. Fan nterest and televson nterest would be greater n a dualmeet champonshp seres that what we now receve n the ndvdual NCAA champonshps. I beleve there would be more nterest from wrestlng fans and from the general publc, and a lot more nterest from televson. We need to pursue adual-meet champonshp as soon as possble. I beleve ths s one thng we need to project for collegate wrestlng to ensure that our programs are not abandoned. I was wrong to the extent that every dream n my lfe that I ve had has been thrown away because 1 was offered money from an alumnus and I took t. (December IS, 1980, NCAA News) Twenty years ago NCAA representatves were present n Washngton, D.C., December 14,1965, when Vce-Presdent Hubert H. Several plavers closng n on I-A career A By James M. Van Valkenburg NCAA Drector of Statstcs Wth the season wndng down, the talented senor class of 1985 s on the verge of some all-tme career records. Navy s Napoleon McCallum, for nstance, needs 501 yards n all-purpose runnng n hs last three games to surpass the Dvson I-A career record of 6,885 by Stanford s lttle Darrn Nelson n 1977-1978-1980-1981 (he mssed 1979 wth an njury). That s a per-game average of 167, and McCaIlum s current season average s 192.9 (gvng hm 6,385 for hs career). Illnos Davd Wllams needs 40 catches n hs last three games to break the career recevng record of 261 catches by Tulsa s Howard Twlley from 1963 to 1965 (Twlley played only three seasons to Wllams four). That s unlkely, but possble. UCLA s John Lee needs only fve feld goals n hs last three games 10 break the career record of 78 by Arzona State s Lus Zendejas from 1981 to 1984. Max Zendejas of Ar- zona, Lus brother and one of several kckers n a famous famly, has 72, just two fewer than Lee, and he also could surpass the record. Lee also seems certan to break the all-tme accuracy record, unless he develops a sudden case of the yps. He s now 74-for-84, or 88.1 percent, and the record s 81.9 percent (usng a mnmum of 60 attempts) by Chuck Nelson of Washngton n 1980-1982. McClure nears 10,000 yards Bowlng Green s Bran McClure needs 342 yards passng n hs last two games to become the second lo,ooo- yard career passer n I-A hstory. Wth 9,658, McClure needs 922 n hs fnal two games-a 461-yard average--to break the career mark of 10,579 by Boston College s Doug Flute n 1981-1984. McClure now s averagng 228 ths season. Next n passng and certan to fnsh hgh are Iowa s Chuck Long at 8,385 and Illnos Jack Trudeau al 7,413, followed by Fresno State s Kevn Sweeney (only junor n the group) at 7,394 and Brgham Young s Robbe Bosco at 7.25 I. In total offense, McClure leads wth 9, I54 rushng-passng yards ~ thrd on the all-tme I-A lst. Long had 8,261, Trudeau 7,356, Sweeney 7,1.65 and Bosco 6,875. 214 and countng Trudeau, by the way, now has a streak of 214 consecutve passes wthout an ntercepton after throwng 36 passes aganst Mchgan. That breaks one of the oldest records n the book- 198 n a row by Tulsa s Jerry Rhome n 1964. And remember, Trudeau has three more games ths season to add to hs streak. 4,000 next At least three players can reach 4,000 career rushng yards by the end of the season-auburn s Bo Jackson has 3,967, Notre Dame s Allen Pnkett 3,827 and McCallum 3,761. Next are Lousana State s Dalton Hllard at 3,479, Southern Methodst s Regge Dupard 3,354 and Washngton State s Rueben Mayes 3,195. Tottenf toteboard Msssspp Valley State s Wlle Totten smashed a whole flock of Dvson I-AA and all-tme, alldvsons NCAA season records n passng and total offense n 1984. Wth many of hs recevers gone, hs fgures are more human ths fall but stll outstandng. Wth 11,742 career passng yards and I 1,952 n total offense, he s second on the all-tme, all-dvsons lst to Portland State s Nel Lomax, who leads wth 13,220 passng and 13,345 total offense n 1977-1980. Totten, however, holds the alldvsons mark n career touchdown passes at 130 (to 106 for Lomax). Rhode Island s Tom hrhardt wll fnsh hgh, as wll Lehgh s Marty Horn. hrhardt now has 8,829 total offense and 9,361 passng, Horn 8,395 total offense and 8,569 passng. Horn s Jm Karsatos, Oho State, ranks among the Dvson I-A leaders n pawng efjcency favorte target, Renne Benn, has 223 catches (a dstant second to Jerry Rce, Totten s former target, whose 301 s the all-dvsons record) and 3,486 recevng yards. Dudek rencha 73 Plymouth State s Joe Dudek, already above Walter Payton s NCAA all-dvsons record of 66 career touchdowns and already the Dvson III carrer rushng leader, reached 73 wth three more TDs November 2 and now has 5,180 yards rushng. He thus surpassed the 70 by Wlbert Montgomery of Ablene Chrstan from 1973 to 1976 when that college was an NAIA member. Payton played at Jackson State from 1971 to 1974. The Dvson III duel between Wheaton s Keth Bshop and Wscons&-Stevens Pont s Dave Gessler s gong down to the wre, wth both far above the prevous dvson records for passng and total offense. Through October 26, Bhop had 8,965 passng and 8,462 total offense wth two Football games left, whle Gessler had 8,820 passng and 8,233 total offense wth three games left. Another record streak? South Dakota State junor Jeff Tefenthaler caught another touchdown pass November 2 and now has at least one scorng catch n 13 consecutve games. Can any Dvson II player top that? (Ron Lenz, South Dakota State SID) lhvo lttle guys Temple junor Paul Palmer, only 5-9 and 171, s second natonally n rushng and already has reached 3,029 for hs career. Mssour sophomore Darrell Wallace, only 5-7 and 167, ranks 13th n rushng and already has the second- and thrd-best rushng games n Tger hstory at 224 and 196. Both players exude confdence. I m harder to brng down than people thnk, says Palmer. I wanted to go to Maryland, but they were not nterested. I had a vst scheduled for West Vrgna, but they canceled t. I ve always consdered t ther loss. Says Wallace: I ve got a bg heart, a lot of selftonfdence and a lot of prde n all that I do. I can go out and get t done. A par of 200s Tulsa s Gordon Brown rushed for 214 yards and teammate Steve Gage (a quarterback) for 206 aganst W- chta State November 2-1he frst such par of 200s n I-A hstory. Who came the closest untl now? Syracuse s Larry Csonka (216) and Floyd Lttle (196) aganst West Vrgna n 1965. Intercepton record Indana Central senor Tom Collns has establshed an all-tme NCAA collegate (or all-dvsons) career record for nterceptons at 36 (eght ths season n eght games). He had two October 26 aganst Georgetown (Kentucky), ncludng hs frstever career ntercepton touchdown on a 60- yarder. That broke the former career Allen Pnkett, Notre Dame, ranks among the rushng leaders n Dvson I-A record of 34 by the Dvson III record-holder, Ralph Gebhardt of Rochester n 1972-1975. Collns already had the Dvson II career record. Wth 384 return yards on hs 36 steals, Collns s not far from the Dvson II career record of 41 I, set by Greg Anderson of Montana on just I1 nterceptons n 1974-1976. The NCAA collegate record s 479 by Fort Valley State s ugene Hunter on 29 returns n 1972-1974 (also the Dvson III record). The 6-3, 195-pound Collns also plays varsty basketball at Indana Central as a guard-forward. He was the team s sxth man or supersub last season. Basketball comes to me naturally, Collns says. Quotes of the week Wthout doubt, UTP s 23-16 upset over Brgham Young s defendng natonal champons October 26 was one of the most remarkable n college football hstory. Consder that UTP entered the game wnless for the season, wth an 1 I-year-plus record of 14-l 13, and had lost the last I4 meetngs wth BYU (snce 1977, BYU had scored 347 ponts to 43 for UTP). Its last vctory over BYU was n 1970-also UTP s last wnnng season (64). BYU had won 30 of ts last 31 games and 25 straght Western Athletc Conference games. UTP held BYU to I5 1 passng yards, and BYU had ganed at least 200 yards passng for 64 consecutve games snce September 6, 1980, when t was held to 147 pasng by New Mexco. UTP ntercepted four passes-a fgure topped by only one BYU opponent snce 1977 (Georga, wth sx n 1982).
