Introduction Troop 365 is very pleased to host the 2014 Chisholm Trail District Camporee (Camporee). The Camporee will be held March 22-23, 2014 at Longhorn Council s Camp Tahuaya in Belton, TX. This year s theme is Scout Call of Duty Night Ops. The theme differentiates the fact the camporee activities happen primarily Saturday evening with Patrol Night Ops Missions in the dark culminating with a midnight bonfire. The theme is designed to appeal to the sense of fun, adventure, and imagination so active in boys. In addition, the program helps to put into practice Scouting skills, team building, personal reflection, physical agility, and resourcefulness. The camporee program was inspired by the "Siege of Mafeking", the most famous British action in the Second Boer War. It took place at the town of Mahikeng (called Mafeking by the British) in South Africa over a period of 217 days, from October 1899 to May 1900, and turned Robert Baden-Powell, who went on to found the Scouting Movement, into a national hero. This unique experience begins Saturday afternoon and continues into the late evening. Patrols are given orders to accomplish several night ops missions during the course of the evening. An adult accompanies each patrol for safety purposes. Patrols are awarded points based on their performance in achieving each mission. We think this year s theme will be a lot of fun for the boys and adults alike. SCOUT SPIRIT will be on display throughout the Camporee. Registration Registration will be performed online using the Capitol Area Council s DoubleKnot reservation system. A link will be posted off the Chisholm Trail District s website, http://chisholmtrail-bsacac.org/ or you can go directly to DoubleKnot at http://bsacac.doubleknot.com/event/chisholm-trail-district-camporee-2014/1479700. At this time, Chisholm Trail District, only accepts credit/debit card or Check/bank draft, at the time of registration. The Council is no longer able to accept a PAY LATER (Pay at the Council Office) Option. Please plan your unit registration process accordingly, and be prepared to pay the full balance at the time of registration. Attendees Registration will open Friday January 17 and close Monday March 10, 2014. You will register your scouts/adults as a Troop and NOT individual level. When registering we need to know the number of registered scouts and registered adults that plan to attend with your unit. ONLY registered Scouts and adult leaders may attend the camporee. No other family members or guests may attend unless they are registered with the BSA. The exception is the OA Call out scheduled for Saturday 6:30-7:30pm. Family members may attend the OA Callout but should leave after callout is completed. There is no cost for those that only attend the OA Callout. We also need your Troop to provide the Scoutmaster Name, phone number and email address as part of the registration so we can communicate regularly with your Troop as the Camporee approaches. Unit event information Each Troop will be assigned (prior to the Camporee) an afternoon scout skill event or night ops mission station to monitor, guide and lead. A combination of Troop adults and scouts will be required for each events and missions assigned. Troop Contests - Saturday afternoon events include gateway building contest, shooting, archery, rappelling, orienteering course, capture the flag, patch trading and much, much more. Points awarded to Troops who participate. 3
Patrol Contests - Saturday evening night ops missions all held in the dark of night and are a surprise! Points awarded to Patrols defined as 8-12 scouts who participate. A troop adult accompanies each patrol for safety purposes. More information will be forthcoming on your troop assignments and responsibilities as the Camporee approaches. Camporee Fee The cost per scout and adult attending the camporee is $15.00 each. The cost includes (1) one regular patch, (1) ghost trading patch, (1) miniature flashlight and (1) A Scout is Brave glow-in-the-dark wrist band. These items are limited to the first 600 registered scouts and adults so please register early starting January 17. The cost of the camporee is the same for late arrivals and those that leave early. There are no pro-rated fees. Chisholm Trail District, only accepts credit/debit card or Check/bank draft, at the time of registration. Patch This year s patches will be 3.25 inches wide by 3.25 inches tall with a pocket loop and fit nicely under your r-hand pocket on your scout shirt. Logistics After the success and positive feedback from the 2013 Camporee we will be returning once again to Camp Tahuaya for the 2014 Camporee. Directions to Camp Tahuaya When leaving from Round Rock, head north on I-35. Take exit 289A, Tahuaya Road, which is about 34 miles north of Round Rock. Take a left on Tahuaya, which is also known as Elmer King Road. Note that the Tahuaya Road takes a sharp right as you approach the camp. Do not take the jog onto Smith Dairy Road. Camp is less than a mile from I-35. The camp s physical address is 2603 Tahuaya Drive, Belton. GPS coordinates for the main entrance are 31.007003, -97.506806 or +31 0' 25.211", -97 30' 24.502" 5

Parking PARKING IS LIMITED. Please car pool as much as possible. Parking attendants will direct vehicles where to park in the parking lot. Only if needed, overflow parking will line up along Tahuaya Road. Only one (1) trailer and one (1) vehicle per unit will be allowed in the campsite. You should pack as much Troop and personal gear in your trailer to take to your campsite or carry your personal gear individually to your campsite when you arrive. Check-in Your Scoutmaster and Senior Patrol Leader are required to attend the Camporee Orientation at 12:15pm in the Camporee Headquarters located at the Dining Hall. They should bring with them following items: FINAL attendance list registered scout and adult names Emergency name and contact phone list for 2 adults attending camp in case of emergency FINAL scout assignments for scout skill events (see p.11) FINAL Patrol assignments for night ops missions (see p. 12-13) number of patrols participating. Please provide your Troop s patrol name designations using military phonetic alphabet (ex. 365-Alpha, 365-Bravo, etc.) FINAL adult and scout names staffing event or night ops assigned FINAL Order of the Arrow Ordeal candidate call out list FINAL Order of the Arrow Brotherhood candidate list Troop check ($) for additional fees owed as appropriate Miniature flashlights and glow-in-the-dark wristbands based on registered numbers will be distributed at Check-in orientation attended by the Scoutmaster and SPL in preparation for the night ops missions. 7
Troop 365 is not tracking each attendee in camp. Each unit is responsible for keeping track of scouts and adults in attendance at all times plus guests attending the Order of the Arrow call out ceremony Saturday at 6:30pm. Campsite assignment Your unit will be assigned a campsite upon check-in, along with a map. Depending on final registration numbers, Troops may have to share campsites with another Troop. If this is the case, this will be noted at check-in. Please allow space if your unit is sharing a site and reduce your footprint accordingly. Exception early arrivals One advantage to this style of Camporee at night is that it avoids the hurried Friday night departure and travel/set up routine. For many units, it is a very hectic routine on Friday night. You can now leave Saturday morning at a more leisurely pace. Being as most of the FUN happens Saturday afternoon and night into the late evening hours, we encourage scouts to get plenty of rest at home Friday night before the come on Saturday. That said, we encourage our Latter Day Saints sponsored Troops to attend the Camporee and are welcome to come out Friday night. We look forward to you participating in the Saturday afternoon activities and OA Call out ceremony. If your troop needs to come out Friday night, you must contact Troy Daeschner, Camporee Committee Chairman in advance of the Camporee by March 1, 2014. NO program will be offered until Saturday afternoon - until then, your Troop will be responsible for your own program. In the past, Troops that came out Friday night tended to have scouts who stay up late Friday night and wake up too early Saturday morning and ran out of gas Saturday night before they could complete all their night ops missions. This is why we will entertain these Troop requests on an exception basis. 8
Departures Once your Troop is ready to check-out, a representative should report to the Camporee Headquarters located in the Dining Hall. Patches will be distributed at this time. Troop campsites will NOT be inspected for cleanliness prior to a unit completing check-out. Scouts are expected to leave the campsite better than they found it, with all trash removed. Latter Day Saints units have an early check-out option on Saturday night and will be coordinated accordingly. IMPORTANT: Safety Talk Rifle Shooting, Archery and Climbing/Rappelling For those scouts representing their Troops in the Air Rifle Shooting, Archery and/or Climbing/Rappelling scout skill events Saturday afternoon, there will be a mandatory safety talk at 12:00pm at the Camporee headquarters located at the Dining Hall. Failure to attend the safety talk will preclude the scout from participating in the event thereby costing your Troop points in the scout skill competition Saturday afternoon. Events, Contests and Night Ops Overview The camporee will include competitions for patrols and troops alike. First, Saturday afternoon will be focused on the William D. Boyce Scout Skill Competition where selected scouts representing their Troop will go through various scout skills on a roundrobin basis scoring points for their Troop during each of the skill events. Top Troop performances (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd ) will be recognized at the Midnight Bonfire Saturday night. Second, Saturday afternoon, each Troop is invited to participate in the Daniel Carter Beard Gateway Building Contest where troops will be judged in their pioneering skills. Senior Patrol Leaders will judge gateways entering your troop camp based on design, originality and use of number of knots and lashings. The best Daniel Carter Beard Gateway will be recognized at the Midnight Bonfire Saturday night. Third, Saturday evening will provide a great opportunity for your Troop to cook and showcase your favorite menu in the Ernest Thompson Seton Cooking Contest. A select group of Scoutmasters and District representatives will judge the cooking entries based on presentation, taste and originality. Presentation will play a significant part in the judging. Can you say white table linens and candlelight? The best Ernest Thompson Seton Cooking entry will be recognized following the Scouts Own Service Sunday morning. Finally, Saturday evening will focus on the Lord Baden Powell Night Ops Competition where patrols will compete on a round-robin basis scoring points for their patrols during each of the night ops missions. Under the cover of darkness, the environment takes on a mystery which creates a more exciting mood. The secrets of the night will be featured and appreciated. Things seem larger, farther, and more intriguing at night. Top Patrol performances (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd ) will be recognized following the Scouts Own Service Sunday Morning. 11
Event and Night Ops Staffing Troops will be assigned to staff the afternoon scout skill and evening night ops competitions with 2-3 adults and 2-3 scouts. Troop 365 will provide detailed guides on your assigned responsibilities approximately 1-2 weeks prior to the Camporee. You will not be responsible for any supplies. If your troop has a specific specialty and would like to lead, contact Troy Daeschner, Camporee Committee Chairman to discuss further. Daniel Carter Beard Gateway Building Contest and other Open events These events are open to all troops and scouts who want to participate. Boyce Scout Skill Events Due to event size limitations, we will only be able to accept 5 scouts per troop for each event below with exception of Orienteering, which will be a 3-man team per troop. The Scoutmaster should determine who from their troop should represent them for each event during the round-robin completion. It does not have to be the same scouts for each event. You might look at scouts who have the greatest knowledge or skill in an area. Or you might use as a skill development opportunity for a particular scout. 12

All entries must be prepared upon arrival at the Camporee. NO assistance can be provided by any adult leader pertaining to any entry by a group of scouts. All entries for this contest must be taken to the Camporee Headquarters in the Dining Hall at 8:00pm. They will be judged by a small group of Scoutmasters and District representatives. Don t forget presentation as much as taste and originality! Lord Baden Powell Night Ops Competition Due to number of scout attendees at the camporee, each patrol will only be able to attend six (6) of the twelve (12) night ops missions. The patrol night ops missions will be randomly selected for the patrols before the Camporee based on number of scout attendees registered from your troop divided by 8-12 scouts per patrol. Scoutmasters will need to provide an accurate number of patrols participating in the Night Ops competition at Check in Saturday morning. As a reminder, Troops should be divided into patrols of 8-12 scouts to maximize the competition, resourcefulness and fun! These can be your actual patrols or you may set up temporary patrols just for these events. Mission #2 Blind Escape OPEN Patrols The Patrol Leader will be tested on how clearly he can give instructions and how well he can keep his patrol together coaching them through a situation. Mission #3 Secret Stranger OPEN Patrols This game will test the patrol's resourcefulness and use of reasoning. Mission #4 Enemy Encampment OPEN Patrols This event combines some exciting elements, a test of the boys' observation skills, their ability to work together as a team, and their natural desire to run around in the dark desparately trying not to be caught by adults. Mission #5 Stealth Hike OPEN Patrols This event is a test of the boys' ability to maintain silence, requiring them to work together as a team, and control their behavior. 14
Lord Baden Powell Night Ops Competition continued Saturday Evening Night Ops missions Troop Assigned Availability Description "Lord Baden Powell Night Ops Competition" "Patrol" defined as 8-12 Scouts Mission #6 Solo Encounter OPEN Patrols This event combines two elements, a brief solo experience in the woods at night and the challenge to move their patrol to another station down the trail without making any noise at all. Mission #7 Espionage Adventure OPEN Patrols This event will test the boys' ability to navigate with instructions, teamwork and speed. Mission #8 Greenfinger Sanction OPEN Patrols This game will test the patrol on how well the group worked together and how original their "cover story" is in order to infiltrate the enemy. Mission #9 Mission: Impossible OPEN Patrols As participants, the boys will be working in a remote location when they encounter a realistic scenario where their scout skills will come in very handy. Mission #10 Mission #11 All Tied Up OPEN Patrols How well the boys can "tie" up this mystery will depend on their ability to work as a team. Hot Under Fire OPEN Patrols This event will test the boys' ability to take on the heat of the moment with speed and resourcefulness without communicating by voice commands. Mission #12 Mystery Mission OPEN Patrols Bonding, team performance, problem solving and ability to organized quickly will deliver the winning results for this mystery. 15
The Competitors A Scout smiles and whistles under all circumstances. Lord Baden Powell All Scouts who participate in the various events, contests and competitions should keep in mind the 12 Points of the Scout Law including Friendly, Courteous, Kind and Brave. The activities are designed to be fun and challenging while bringing out the best in their scout spirit, teamwork and performance. PATROL YELLS are a critical ingredient to introducing a patrol as they enter a competition area and a great reflection of a patrol s SCOUT SPIRIT! Make sure patrols have a leader who will report at the start of the event and ensure that their patrol name and unit number gets correctly recorded. Patrols can be mixed or same age patrols. We recommend however that patrols with same age patrols with first year scouts be led by a more senior scout with experience as patrol leader or troop guide for the night ops missions. This is an excellent opportunity for older scouts to teach, guide, and lead younger scouts. Score sheets will be collected at the end of contests and competitions. Event stations will be fun, however all events will conform to the Guide to Safe Scouting. 16
Other Activities Patch Trading Our district camporee will include for the first time, the ever-popular, vastly competitive patch-trading experience in a designated area near the Camporee headquarters dining hall area. Patches, You Say? Although it s been around in Scouting since 1920, and made its first appearance at the national jamboree in 1937, it s not unique to Scouting. In fact, there are a lot of different subcultures that trade patches, including police and other emergency professionals even punk rock enthusiasts. Tell your scouts about this opportunity. One of the best ways your scouts (and yes even adults) can be a veritable bartering wrecking ball is to accumulate a handsome stock of patches from which they can trade. Some of the folks they might meet at the camporee have been trading patches for years, so those interested should come prepared with something cool and unique. It takes a long time to build up a good stock of patches to trade, so if patch trading is their gig, they can get started now! Midnight Bonfire and James E. West Talent Contest The Midnight Bonfire will be a time for all in attendance to showcase their SCOUT SPIRIT and drain their remaining energy with FUN before everyone retiring for the night! The entire camp will meet at the amphitheater immediately following the end of the night ops missions at approximately 11:45pm. It is the Scoutmaster s responsibility to work with their troop to determine how they will account for their scouts following the Night Ops missions and find seating together before the bonfire. All units are encouraged to come prepared to the Camporee with scout-appropriate skit or song. A panel of hand-picked judges from the troops will select the Top 3-5 skits during Saturday afternoon from 3:00-4:00pm. The selected Troops will perform at the Midnight Bonfire for an opportunity to win the James E. West Talent Contest. Troops may submit multiple entries. 17
Order of the Arrow Call out and Brotherhood Questioning The OA Call out ceremony is used to recognize candidate scouts and scouters who have been elected by their units (prior to the Camporee) to join the OA. Units should turn in their OA Call out list at Check-in Saturday morning. The call out will be held at the Amphitheater Saturday at 6:30pm promptly following the closing flag ceremony at the camp flag pole. The OA tap out is a very solemn ceremony. Adult leaders should remind the scouts of the seriousness of the occasion. Anyone talking or otherwise disrupting the ceremony will be asked to leave the amphitheater without an initial reminder. Brotherhood questioning will take place Saturday at a time to be determined. If you have OA Ordeal scouts/adults who meet the qualifications for Brotherhood and are interested, please turn in their names at the Check-in Saturday morning. Scouts Own Service A Scout is Reverent The Scouts Own Service will be at 9:30am Sunday in the Amphitheater. This will be a traditional non-denominational service and we encourage all scouts and adults to be Reverent toward God. A Scout is faithful to his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion. 18
Last Minute Details Tour Permit Since Camp Tahuaya is an out-of council camp, please file a tour permit with the Capitol Area Council office. First Aid and Medical Forms There will be a First Aid area near the Camporee headquarters for issues troops cannot address within their campsite. Each troop will be expected to have their medical forms on hand at their campsite. Troop 365 will NOT require copies of all medical forms. Medical forms for all in attendance should be maintained in the campsite by the Scoutmaster or appropriate assigned adult. In the event of an emergency that requires treatment off-site, each unit will be responsible for getting the appropriate medical form to the adults transporting the victim. Youth Protection All adults who stay overnight are expected be registered with their unit and have current youth protection training. Uniforms Class A uniforms should be worn as your Troop travels to/from the Camporee, Flag ceremonies, OA Ceremony and Scouts Own Service. Class B uniforms can be worn during the Saturday afternoon and evening contests and competitions. Food / Meals Each unit is responsible for their own food and drinks. Please plan for lunch, and dinner Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. We encourage patrols to create menu plans that are quick to prepare and provide high energy. Think Philmont a trail food diet is, by necessity, a high-carbohydrate, high-calorie diet rich in wheat, milk products, and sugars. Scouts should bring energy snacks to carry with them Saturday night during the night ops missions. Potable water is available on site. 19
Electronics Please ensure all cell phones are silenced during camporee wide announcements, flags, midnight bonfire, and Sunday Service. Latrines Please use the permanent bathrooms available in the camp, and not the woods or trees. Please ensure that your unit keeps the bathrooms neat and clean.
