The famous beach, Gopalpur on-sea, is about 15 kms away and Andhra border is only 20 kms away from the city. 6 Restorations of sight, and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in health care

HISTORY OF ECOS ECOS was born out of a vision of Dr. Mihir Kumar Bal when God saved his life from a near fatal road accident in 1984, while returning from an eye camp. He could see the purpose of God for which his life was saved. He considers life after that accident as a gift from God to serve Blind people. Taking a step in faith, he resigned from Government job and with the support of friends in Emmanuel Hospital Association(EHA) New Delhi, & EHA European Fellowship ECOS Ministry took shape in 1st May 1991 and was registered as a charitable society in 1992. Contribution and encouragement of EHA in the formative years of ECOS has remained as an unforgettable memory in the life of ECOS. ECOS started a base eye hospital "ECOS Eye Hospital" in a rental building at Giri Road, Berhampur, Odisha. It is the first eye hospital in Southern Orissa. It works in the love and spirit of Jesus Christ irrespective of Caste, Creed or Religion. It has done pioneering works in the field of Community Ophthalmology in Southern part of Orissa and neighbouring district of Andhra Pradesh. Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) International works in partnership with ECOS from 1992.CBM and World Bank Assistance Programme through Government of India ( NPCB) has helped ECOS to have permanent infrastructure at 3rd Tota Street. Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development Germany (BMZ), CBM Germany and CBM SARO Bangalore helped us to have a permanent structure (Annex building) of four floors at 3rd Tota Street, Bijipur, Brahmapur(In front of present hospital). The foundation stone was laid on 01 May 2013 and we shifted to this new building on 23 Mar 16. It was officially inaugurated on 14 Apr 2016, along with "Silver Jubilee" function. COMMUNITY & HEALTH STATUS The people here predominantly speak Odia and Telugu. The tribal population of Ganjam who mostly live in the hilly areas of Ganjam district. Brahmapur is very near to Andhra-Odisha border and around 30% of them speak and understand Telugu. Ganjam district and its neighbouring districts, specially Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati and Koraput are poor and backward districts of Odisha. People are very ignorant about Eye Health Care. Cataract in old age and Vitamin-A deficiency is prevalent in large numbers. Poverty and ignorance are the main cause of poor health status in this area beside lack of medical services. Eye care is also available in the Medical College of Brahmapur City, District Headquarters Hospital, other private hospitals and practitioners. The number of people blind from infectious causes has greatly reduced in the past 20 years 7

An Overview Not that I have already attained, or am already perfect, but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind. Philippians 3:12-16 The past year at ECOS was punctuated by a few milestones. Celebrated 25 years of glorious service. Inauguration of ECOS annexe building. Promoting the concept of primary eye care through opening of a VISION CENTRE at Chilika. Challenges in internal and external environment also characterized the past year. To bring about greater financial transparency, the Government of India demonetized the Rs. 500/= and Rs. 1000/= notes overnight. It was a surprise move, catching everyone unprepared. ECOS responded to it well. The core activity was Community outreach screening camps. We saw four new private eye hospitals in the district stepping with outreach screening camp activities. Inspite, of all we achieved the goals and target, by His grace. Primary eye care were delivered as planned in very much needed areas. An inclusive development meeting with Government Officials and NGOs of Phulbani, CME on World Sight Day in collaboration with Rotary Club of Brahmapur East and Fire Fighting sensitization programme with NGOs and hospitals of the district were conducted successfully. 10 55% of visually impaired people are women

Cataract Surgeries. Almost 99% surgeries were performed with Intra Ocular Lens (IOL). It still remains the leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma Surgeries. Another cause of blindness, which need early intervention as vision loss is not reversible. Other Ocular Surgeries. Ocular diseases like Pterygium, Dacryocystectomy and etc., were also treated. Community Outreach Eye Camps. Camps were held regularly to reach the unreached and serve the underserved. It is the core activity of ECOS. Refractive Error. With a prevalence rate of around 20% it is the second main cause of blindness. Spectacles were dispensed in the community and base hospital In India Prevalence of Childhood Blindness /Low Vision is 0.80 per thousand 11

VISION CENTRE The first vision centre was dedicated to the community on 04 Sep 16, in a rented accommodation of Gurudwara Singh Sabha, in front of INS Navy Chilika. OPD services are four days in a week i.e. Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 09:00 am to 12:00pm. Three staffs from base hospital and one from local area are managing it. Presently, it is creating awareness, eye camps and referral services within a radius of 40 kms in the districts of Puri, Khurdha, Nayagarh. Patients identified for surgical intervention are brought to base hospital. So far 153 cataract surgeries, 976 OPD patients and served referral made for 37 patients. 12 World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held on second Thursday of October every year

SATELLITE CENTRE 1. A Satellite centre in Aska (Ganjam, Orissa) is functioning since 26 Mar, 1999 on every Saturday at Anatha Arnadana Kendra, Aska. This centre is in collaboration with Krushna Chandra Memorial Trust. On every 1st & 3rd Saturday OPD is conducted and on 2nd & 4th Saturday, cataract surgery is done for patient respectively. 2. Every first Friday of the month Eye OPD is being held at Army Air Defence College, Golabandha, Brahmapur since Jun 2006. Defence personnel and their families of this base are given consultancy and treatment. 3. On every first day of Odia calendar month (sankranti) a fixed Eye Camp is held at Taratarini Temple (Purushottampur Block) in co-ordination with Tara Tarini Development Trust, for the poor people. People gather here to visit this famous temple and we take this opportunity to propagate eye health care message. This has been a successful program since 2006. 4. Since January 2012 a fixed Eye OPD is being held in Balipadara (Ganjam, Odisha) on 02nd of every month with the support of a veteran social worker in his house. This place is well connected to nearby villages and comes under Buguda block. 5. A satellite centre in Daringbadi, District-Kandhamal (140 Kms one way), Odisha started functioning on 10th of every month from Apr 2015 in collaboration with an NGO "Jagruti" of Daringbadi. The response is good and in coming days we expect more patient flow from this centre. World Glaucoma Week is an annual week of awareness held on second Wednesday of March every year 13

SUSTAINABILITY Over a period of 25 years of march, ECOS has progressed much to achieve sustainability. With the new annexe building it is helping us to do activities in better way than earlier. However, we still need support for medical equipments and staff quarters is still a need as investments in equipments and constructions are very huge. HURDLES 1. Manpower Need Committed Ophthalmic personnels Supportive Staffs 2. Money. Delay and procedual actions. 3. Materials. Replacement of old diagnostic sight saving equipments and staff quarters. ECOS SCHOOL OF OPTOMETRY Started on 01 Aug 2011, the school had trained 11 students so far for diploma course and 08 students for certificate course (Vision Technician).
