Education Office Congratulations to Sergeant Barry Paige on increasing his ASVAB score by 18 points! When Sergeant Paige visited the Education Office to express his gratitude for our help, we took the opportunity to ask what services he thought helped the most. He told us that having an Education and Career Specialist sit down and coach him on how to identify his personal learning styles allowed him to better retain information. Coupled with the free Peterson s DoD MWR Libraries ASVAB Prep tool, Paige not only achieved his goal of increasing his score, he also exceeded his own expectations. Our specialists train diligently to enhance their skills in education and career coaching to better serve our military community. Coaching focuses on listening, asking the right questions, and allowing each person to discover what they really want. Sgt. Paige is a testament to the success of our career coaching approach, and we are excited to assist the MCAS Cherry Point community in uncovering and developing their personal and professional development needs and goals. - The Education Office Staff 4
Library There are no mistakes, just happy little accidents The Marine Warrior Library celebrated the 2015 MWR Summer Reading Program, Read to the Rhythm, with a variety of community building events. This year s event lineup included a painting class titled Paint to the Rhythm for our adult summer readers, pictured above. Class participants were provided canvas, paint, brushes, and free lattes from the library café, everything they needed to paint along with Bob Ross! The 2015 Summer Reading Program will continue until 1 August, and will culminate with our annual Family Game Night on 31 July, which invites installation families to join us for free pizza and games. If you missed the 2015 Summer Reading Program, please remember to join us in 2016 and Read for the Win!". Financial Planning Personal Financial Management Program: Coaching You and Your Finances The Personal Financial Management Program (PFMP) assists Service members, retirees, and their family members with gaining a better understanding of how money steers financial behaviors and how these behaviors determine an individual's personal financial circumstances. Assessing each client s needs, we ensure that our patrons have a clear understanding of their immediate and long-term goals, then assist with establishing appropriate expectations. We start by identifying what is most important to them, carefully making sure that the individual understands that although PFMP is committed to quality services and assistance; personal financial accountability lies on the patron. We provide the resources and support to build a foundation for achieving what the individual really wants their money to do for them. A strong financial foundation will support goals while encouraging future growth and development. We also assist by building an individual s emotional motivation to achieve basic behaviors that support specific goals and objectives. Because an individual s motivation is essential to their personal financial success, action plans focus on the processes, strategies, and resources needed to achieve these goals. The Marine Corps has also implemented other supportive resources to enhance financial readiness. A key supportive resource is the Command Financial Specialist Program. Command Financial Specialist s (CFS) help to reinforce PFMP coaching strategies by serving as a liaison to unit personnel on matters related to personal financial management. The CFS is appointed to maintain financial competence and proficiency by addressing unit level financial responsibilities and challenges. Command Financial Specialists must be an E-6 or above and receive 40 hours of financial training. If you are interested in learning more about the PFMP or becoming a CFS, please stop by the Personal Financial Management office located in the Training and Education Building, Room 213, or call (252) 466-5837/4201 for more information. 6

Transition Career Coaching is an essential part of a Service member s transitional, educational, and career success. As Service members prepare to leave the military, effective career coaching is instrumental to their transitional success. Career coaching is about mentoring, teaching, and providing the necessary tools that inspire each individual to follow their vision in the pursuit of their educational or career choice. Ultimately, the process promotes teamwork by providing the motivation needed to overcome challenges as they achieve their set goal(s). Final Thoughts P&PD Branch Head, Ranza Thurman Coaching to Success Often times we try to do things on our own when dealing with our careers. In today s fast paced job market, traveling solo on that road to a rewarding career may require someone who can coach you through the process. Coaching tends to be a solution-oriented approach, which involves working with clients to see what concrete steps they can take to achieve career objectives. Coaching also helps people assess their professional situations with a greater degree of honesty, curiosity, empathy and compassion. From coaching, clients can expect to gain career confidence, insight, encouragement, and inspiration. A coaching session will also assist you with unwrapping those emotions to better understand how these factors may be keeping you stuck in an unwanted career or getting it started. If you are interested in learning more about P&PD Career Coaching services, please stop by the Career Assistance and Resource Services office located in the Training and Education Building, Room 213, or call (252) 466-4201 for more information. "I never cease to be amazed at the power of the coaching process to draw out the skills or talent that was previously hidden within an individual, and which invariably finds a way to solve a problem previously thought unsolvable." - John Russell 11
