Welcome to FALL FLEX 2011! College of the Desert Fall Flex Welcome back to College of the Desert for a new semester of challenging and stimulating courses, programs, and students. I trust your summer activities brought you renewed inspiration and enthusiasm that you can share in your classroom. You will receive an update shortly on the progress achieved by our summer study sessions which were designed to lay down a framework for the budget-related decisions that we must make this year for fiscal year 2012-2013. Numerous people from all facets of the college participated voluntarily in discussions and planning to develop a strategy for the coming months. I always appreciate the dedication of our faculty and staff and the work that was accomplished this summer was particularly impressive. I challenge you to take your enthusiasm for your students and carry that through the year and remember they are the reason we are here. Wednesday, August 24, 2011 ONLINE TEACHING ACADEMY Whether you are a face-to-face teacher, online teacher, or one who teaches by combining both, you will find value in this series of seven modules focusing on the pedagogy of teaching and learning with Blackboard. Many faculty have found that learning to teach within a learning management system like Blackboard has taught them concepts of course design and development that they never knew before. The BAIT (formerly the Crisis Resource Team) is composed of Counselors, Health Professional, Psychology Professors, Administrators, & Security on campus that as a group can track Students of Concern, and intervene to direct such students to appropriate help and to the disciplinary process, medical leave of absence, etc.). Faculty members play a key role in recognizing and bringing to the team s attention any seriously disturbed students. The process for that will be presented. For the test at COD two classes in the same subject were compared. Specifically, one class did several writing exercises whereas the other class did not. The two were presented with the same short exercise and their writing output was compared for coherence, vocabulary, diction, length, and other parameters. Through didactic presentation and small group discussion, we will explore the development of addiction, consequences of chemical dependency, and how it affects classroom learning. In addition, we will examine the mental health issues of COA s (children of alcoholics/addicts), and review available referral resources on campus to help students.
