A few words from Leonard Happy New Year! Please join me in welcoming Jo Ann Osburn of Gridley to the Coffey Health System Board of Trustees. To learn a little about Jo Ann, please see page 3. Jo Ann replaces Cameron Roth, who completed his three-year term in December. I also want to congratulate each and every one of you for helping the hospital attain the recent CMS (Medicare) five-star rating! This is a great accomplishment that truly sets us apart from hospitals within an 85-mile range. This designation helps kick-start 2018 as one to remember and it is only January! The new year also brings some other exciting news: we are looking at introducing telemedicine to Coffey Health System. We recently had an onsite demonstration and are excited be bringing tele-stroke technology to our patients. In the future, we hope to be able to provide other telehealth opportunities including psychiatry, pulmonology, and neurology. 2018 is also a new year for politics and legislation that will affect healthcare all across Kansas and America. I will continue to do my best to share with you the changes and proposals that could make a difference for Coffey Health System. I may also ask you once again this year to join me in grassroots efforts to help influence our legislators. Thanks for all you do! Hospital transcription solution will also save money The Coffey Health System Board of Trustees received some welcomed news at its December 18 meeting. The solution for a transcription problem at Coffey County Hospital comes with a potentially significant cost saving. Vice President for Ancillary Services James Higgins explained that transcription services for orthopedics and radiology are separate from the rest of the hospital. These separate platforms allow for the orthopedic surgeon and radiologist to unknowingly overwrite each other s transcription. By changing from Softscripts to Telerad360, all notes reside in one platform with a much lower price tag. The transition will occur in two phases. The first phase radiology and orthopedics begins in January and is expected to save the hospital $22,260 over the next year. When all CHS physicians are transitioned to Telerad, the hospital stands to save $145,470 per year. Chief Financial Officer Jim Van Hoet reported November revenue of $1.9 million with expenses at $2 million, for a $141,057 loss. Numbers are expected to improve with the arrival of flu season. The business office continues to work toward resolving claims that were delayed due to the hospital s transition to Critical Access status. Chief Executive Officer Leonard Hernandez confirmed that while a number of acute care claims are still out, account receivable days are down to 61 from 81 two months ago. Hernandez also announced that the hospital will receive an increase in Blue Cross Blue Shield incentive payments. They offer an incentive program in which hospitals that meet all of the quality criteria can get up to a 26 percent increase in reimbursements, he said. I got a letter today saying that in the next quarter we will get 23 percent of that 26 available, which is pretty good. We ve put in a lot of hard work to get there. In other business, the board formally adopted the risk management plan. The board also approved General Surgeon Scott Coates reappointment to the medical staff, along with extension of privileges for Cardiologist Hemant Booloni. Board chair Judy Reese thanked Cameron Roth for his service to Coffey Health System. Roth, who served on the board for three years, chose not to reapply at the end of his term. The Coffey County Commission later appointed Jo Ann Osburn, Gridley, to replace Roth. She was sworn in on December 22nd. Two executive sessions followed, totaling 25 minutes. The first session included Hernandez and Executive Assistant Terri Tweedy to address matters pertaining to non-elected personnel. The second session addressed matters of attorney/client privilege. Legal counsel Brooke Assure participated via conference call. Eight trustees were present: Peter Allegre, Steve Hopkins, Judy Reese, Rosemary Rich, Cameron Roth, Craig Stukey, Jodi Thomas, and Dennis Young. Jeff Clark was absent. The meeting adjourned at 7:32 p.m. The board next meets in regular session at 6:30 p.m., January 22, 2018. Jo Ann Osburn Jo Ann Osburn, Gridley, was appointed to the CHS Board of Trustees by the Coffey County Commission. She was sworn in on December 22. Osburn taught business and computer classes at USD 245 for 29 years before retiring in 2010. She is the office manager at the Burlington office of Coffman & Campbell, LLC. She is involved in the community, serving as a trustee for the R.E. French Foundation, secretary for the Holtz Community Foundation, and treasurer for Gridley United Methodist Church. She is also active with PEO and Eastern Star. Osburn replaces Cameron Roth, who chose not to reapply at the end of his three-year term. The Certified Dementia Practitioner certification or CDP, confirms that a healthcare professional has received comprehensive knowledge in the area of dementia care, and completed the Alzheimer s Disease and Dementia Care course. This position allows the caregiver to connect with the individual on a different level, using different techniques for the patient s mind-set, says James Higgins, Vice President of Ancillary Services. Coffey County Hospital Earns Five-Star Medicare Rating Coffey County Hospital earned the coveted five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that runs the Medicare program. This rating places Coffey County Hospital among the top 7 percent of the nation s hospitals. Only ten Kansas hospitals earned the five-star rating, said Coffey Health System Chief Executive Officer Leonard Hernandez. We are the only hospital in an 80-mile radius, and one of only four community-based hospitals in the state to receive this distinction. Hospitals across the country report data to CMS regarding all aspects of patient care. The recently announced star ratings are based upon 2016 data from 4,579 facilities. The five-star rating is based upon what truly matters: patient care, Hernandez said. It reflects a consistent level of excellence from every department, every day, and with every patient and we continue to raise the bar with new quality measures. According to the CMS Hospital Compare website, the star-rating formula includes 57 measures divided into seven categories: mortality, safety of care, The five-star rating is based upon what truly matters: patient care. Some categories (mortality, readmission, complications, imaging efficiency, and unplanned hospital visits measures) are based only on Medicare patients, while others (process of care, healthcareassociated infections, and patient experience measures) include all patients. Other five-star community hospitals in the state are Labette Health, Parsons; Providence Medical Center, Kansas City; and St. Luke South Hospital, Overland Park. Six specialty/private hospitals also made the list: Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita; Kansas Medical Center, Andover; Manhattan Surgical Hospital, Manhattan; Premiere Surgical Institute, Galena; Salina Surgical Hospital, Salina; and St. John Hospital, Leavenworth. Of other area hospitals, Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa earned four stars; Newman Regional Hospital, Stormont-Vail Health, and Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center earned three stars; and Allen County Regional Hospital and St. Francis Hospital received two stars. Anderson County Hospital and Greenwood County Hospital reported too few measures to calculate a star rating. Forrest Whitfield Heather Riley, RN, welcomed a son on October 24. Forrest arrived at 12:09 p.m., weighing 9 pounds. Heather and her husband Mike finalized Forrest s adoption on November 29. Our patients will benefit from McVey s counseling and management support to families who are thinking about breastfeeding or who have questions or problems during the course of breastfeeding/lactation. Shout out to the hospital registration staff! On a Monday in January, they registered 80 patient episodes in one day with one employee! That s amazing and so very appreciated! Congratulations!
