Korean War When World War II ended, Korea became a divided country. 38 th Parallel established two countries: North and South Korea North Korea was backed by the Soviet Union s communist government South Korea was backed by the non-communist Western powers (U.S., Britain, France)

Korean War By 1949, most troops that had been stationed in Korea during World War II had been removed Soviets assumed that the US would not defend South Korea, and supplied North Korea with tanks, airplanes, and money in an attempt to take over the entire area On June 25, 1950, North Koreans surprise attacked South Korea

Korean War President Truman had promised in the Truman Doctrine to help any free country to resist communism He believed that the Korean conflict was an attempt to spread communism and asked the UN for help A total of 15 nations, including the US and Britain, participated in a defense of South Korea led by Douglas MacArthur
