TRHA CONFERENCE AGENDA DAY 1 7:00-8:00 am Breakfast 7:30 am Registration Opens 8:00 am Welcome and Introductions 8:10 am Cutting Edge Rural Healthcare Speaker: Jodi Schmidt, NRHA President (invited) What does it mean to be on the cutting edge of rural healthcare? Seems like a tall order, but innovation is a must when it comes to delivering healthcare services in a remote, rural area with limited resources. This session will outline the direction that healthcare providers must now be going in to remain a vibrant piece of the fabric that makes up our rural communities. Come be inspired and motivated to control your own destiny. 9:00 am The Importance of Leadership in Rural America Speaker: Jayne Pope, CEO Hill Country Memorial Hospital (invited) Leadership is a key component of any thriving rural community, but especially in the healthcare sector. However, we don t often take enough time or expend enough resources to adequately prepare individuals and organizations in rural areas to assume those leadership roles. We must invest in the future of our communities by finding avenues for leadership training and development. Come and hear some shining examples of rural leadership in action. 9:50 am Break with sponsors and friends of TRHA 10:10 am The Care and Treatment of Your Medical Community Speakers: AHEC Representatives from East, South and West Texas Area Health Education Centers make up the backbone for the delivery of health education and training throughout rural Texas. This session will showcase one of our largest stakeholder groups as representatives from the three regional AHECs in Texas discuss a wide variety of initiatives that make up everything from their highly successful health careers pipeline programs to their efforts to engage communities on locally-driven health programs. 11:00 am Academic Presentations Speakers: Selected Rural Health Students and Researchers This session will feature several short research-related presentations selected by the Academic Advisory Committee. The goal is to highlight some of the relevant academic research taking place among the students and programs that focus on rural health here in Texas at our state colleges and universities. Come and learn how you might be able to put their research into practice right in your own rural community. 12:00 pm TRHA Awards Luncheon This event is an opportunity to recognize our awardees, sponsors, friends and leaders of TRHA and its partners. Please join us for some lunch and inspiring stories about our many rural health leaders and mentors.
TRHA CONFERENCE AGENDA 1:30 pm Policymakers and Perspectives Speakers: Representatives J.D Sheffield and Travis Clardy Moderator: Don McBeath, TORCH 3:00 pm Break Our elected officials have the sometimes unenviable task of facing the tough questions about how to sustain the rural health safety net. Even more so now, given the recent reform efforts that have taken place at the federal level and increasing cost of the healthcare obligation that most states are facing. Join us for the questions and answers you want to hear from policymakers that have shown the greatest interest in rural health. 3:30 pm Telemedicine and Beyond Speaker: Nora Belcher, Texas e-health Alliance Recently, there has been a marked increase in the interest in and the use case for strong future growth in telemedicine and other technologies in rural areas. Access to care and quality continue to be two of the greatest concerns for rural communities, but technology has the power to address both and to do it in a very cost-effective manner with virtually no regard for distance or remoteness. See how rural communities will soon harness the true power of technology. 4:30 pm TRHA Annual Membership Meeting 5:00 pm Reception DAY 2 7:30-8:00 am Breakfast 8:00 am The High Cost of Being #1 in the Uninsured Speaker: Laura Guerra-Cardus, Children s Defense Fund-Texas Texas continues to struggle under the weight of an exceedingly large population of people with no or limited access to affordable healthcare coverage. The impact of that burden is felt by our government, businesses, taxpayers and most of all our healthcare providers. This session will explore the true costs of leaving this segment of our population without appropriate access to vital healthcare services. 9:00 am Rural Healthcare Partners Updates Speakers: Brad Denton, TDA, Dr. John Bowling UNT HSC and Billy Phillips Texas Tech HSC There are several organization that play a large role in the development of policy and programs intended to address rural healthcare in Texas. There are people who have studied that question and the answers and examples they have to share are both admirable and replicable. Please join us for this rousing closing session and go back home determined to do what you can do to make your community truly great. 11:00 am Adjourn
