Missouri United Methodist Foundation A Spofford Success Story SCAMPS Summer Camp Spofford Change Action and Mastery Programs (SCAMPS) Summer Day Camp is a godsend for children and parents. As one mother put it, I was at my wit s end There are a lot [of camps] for physical disabilities, but not many for behavioral disorders. This beautiful wooded campus in southwest Kansas City exists today thanks to an initial gift from Mrs. Bebe Spofford to the Methodist Church back in 1916. Spofford Home began as an orphanage, but quickly became a leader in therapeutic care, and today is a model for addressing the complex needs of young children suffering the effects of physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and mental health disorders. The SCAMPS program complements the other residential and schoolbased programs Spofford administers year-round. Each four-week camp session costs $1,500 per child, but Spofford strives to ensure that scholarships are available for every child in need. Spofford is a national mission institution of the General Board of Global Ministries and a ministry of the Missouri Conference. In 2011, your Missouri United Methodist Foundation continued the long legacy of United Methodist support for this outstanding ministry with a Foundation grant in the amount of $5,000 to help underwrite the costs of the SCAMPS program. A SCAMPS camper named David (age 9) says it best, Spofford had more patience and gave me more second chances They should keep Spofford summer camp going forever. To learn more, to donate or to volunteer, go to www.spoffordhome.org or call 816-508-3400. Fall 2011
