Traffic Enforcement One of the normal duties of a patrol officer is One of the normal duties of a patrol officer is the observation of vehicular traffic driving through the city coupled with enforcement action against drivers who violate the laws in regards to safe and legal vehicle operation. Officers, on average, make one traffic stop and issue one citation per day. Citizen involvement in the traffic enforcement program is strictly voluntary

Detective Division During the 2011 calendar year the detective division conducted numerous undercover drug operations resulting in 34 search warrants and 114 felony drug indictments. Detectives worked 28 clandestine meth labs within the city limits resulting in numerous arrests for meth cooks, dealers, and users. Detective Division At the present time, prescription p drug/fraud/ / abuse (50%) is the leading drug violation in the city of Athens. Marijuana is the second most abused (40%)with Methamphetamine and Cocaine third (10%). Detectives were assigned 955 felony cases in 2011. Of these cases, 114 indictments were handed down by the McMinn County Grand Jury on multiple offenses. Due to the violent nature of certain crimes and/or the possible flight risk of suspects 220 direct arrest warrants were taken by detectives.

Elementary School Abuse Prevention Program TheAthens Police Department partners with the Athens City School System in funding nationally recognized programs to the fourth through six grade students for drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse prevention.
