THE AMERICAN LEGION CLINTON POST 259 9122 Piscataway Road FOR GOD AND COUNTRY... Clinton, Maryland 20735 (301) 868-2550 Larry G. Hall, Commander Web Site: post259.org MARCH MICHAEL A. PRICE, EDITOR 2011 COMMANDER S MESSAGE Does it seem to you that it was just recently we celebrated the new year and here it is, the third month of the year already. It won t be long before the main topic at the bar will be how hot it is. In February, we completed the local competition for the Oratorical contest. Post 259 was the host for our own contest, the Prince Georges County Council contest and finished with the Southern Maryland District contest. Our candidate, Emarri Lopes also won the PG county competition. She placed third in the district meeting. She is an outstanding young lady who gave a fabulous speech. She attends Surrat High School and is a member of the Junior ROTC program. In March and April at our General Membership meetings, we will holding our nominations for the Post Officers for 2011-2012. The Nominating Committee will have a slate of candidates they feel qualified to perform the duties of the positions. Anyone, however, may be nominated from the membership, so long as they wish to accept. I have been approached by some members who feel we should make some changes in the canteen as it pertains to games. It has been suggested that we remove the bowling machine and bring back a shuffleboard and a pool table. Provided our initial expense is minimal, I intend to make those changes and see if we can improve our income that way. Anyone who has additional ideas should come to a General Membership meeting and bring them up before the members. Executive Committeeman Jim Panor gives us some interesting information pertaining to one of our long time members, Jimmy Geralis. If you read the American Legion magazine for September, you saw, on page 58 an article about South Dakota congressman Royal C. Johnson. Mr. Johnson, in 1932 was instrumental in getting Congress to officially incorporate the American Legion. That same year, Jimmy was baptized at the Greek Orthodox Church in Washington, DC. His Godfather was there. His Godfather was Royal C. Johnson.

Speaking of Jim Panor, as you probably know, he is the Chairman of our American Legion Baseball program. This year, we are again sponsoring a team from Bishop McNamara High School. Our program here at the post has sponsored the participation of approximately 230 boys and 25 of these boys have received scholarships to college for their educational and baseball ability. Gary Prange, head coach, and his 3 man staff are predicting a great season for 2011 since all the players from last year are returning. Jim is forming an American Legion Post 259 Baseball Booster s club. To join, please give us a check or cash in the amount of $5.00 (any amount over that will also be appreciated!). We will use these funds to help outfit the team this year. Make checks payable to Clinton American Legion. You can mail them in or stop by the post and donate. Let s get our post back into supporting our community again. Check out the March calendar. Lots going on. Get Involved. Yours in Legion service Larry G. Hall Commander NEW MEMBERS The following are the names of the new members that were voted in to the Post at the February 28th, 2010 meeting. Christopher K. Hayden New U.S. Army Darrell D. Auxilliary PRESIDENT S REPORT: Well, this year is just flying by. There are only a few more months left before we need to recruit new officers. Liz White and Connie Puryear have agreed to be on the Nominating Committee. Please contact them if you want to be heard. We need new ideas and new people to come to meetings. Our most devoted members are aging and need our help. There are over 300 members in our club, but less than twenty people do all the fundraising activities. We re supposed to honor and support our active service personnel and veterans. Twenty hardworking TIRED women can t do it all..we need HELP! Please call one of us to offer your help. There are two fundraising activities coming up that we could use help with: Palm Sunday Breakfast on April 17 th and a Community Yard Sale on May 14 th. Please contact me if you re able to help. Please sign up your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews for our annual Children s Easter Party on April 10 th. There will be a sign up sheet on the front door this week. The kids will have a great time! At our last meeting Liz White reminded everyone about all the benefits that the American Legion Auxiliary provides to its members. There are some great items listed. Our members have so much information to share. Please attend our next meeting on March 14, 2011 at 7:30 PM. Now accepting 2011 dues: $14.00 for Seniors and $4.00 for Juniors.
